Holmesglen celebrated a memorable occasion when hosting the 20th Annual Awards Festival Dinner at the Park Hyatt on Friday 31 March 2017.

The Institute’s 20th annual Awards Festival has been a wonderful celebration of our students and staff, and recognition of our industry relationships and partnerships. It is also a celebration of the work that the Institute does in the community and the wider Victorian economy in skilling and reskilling the state’s workforce and also in providing an opportunity for students and clients to connect with learning to grow and develop. This year, the Awards Festival included two graduation ceremonies, where over 500 students graduated with a diploma, bachelor or graduate diploma, and for the first year we had graduates from the Masters of Professional Accounting, in addition to the 10 individual department events and the showcase Awards Dinner where student and staff awards were announced.

The festival celebrates the diversity of our student cohort with international students, young students, older students, apprentices, English language students, people already in the workforce, certificate, diploma and bachelor students all being an important part of the Institute and its success.

The festival not only recognises success but the stories from our students are evidence that education can change lives and enhance opportunities. At this year’s graduation ceremonies, the occasional speaker was Fablice Manirakiza who told his amazing story of his journey from a former African child soldier to winning a Young Victorian Achiever of the Year award.

Fablice is originally from the central African nation of Burundi, but following the death of parents he was forced to become a child soldier. He eventually came to Australia as a refugee and now performs as a rapper, as well as touring schools telling his story and is also president of the Burundian Community of Victoria

The message Fablice left the graduates at the ceremony on Tuesday 28 March was the importance of education and the impact it has on individuals and communities. Fablice reiterated what we believe and why we work in education.

Holmesglen is proud of its place in the Victorian vocational sector. We are the largest TAFE provider in Victoria and the largest TAFE provider to international students with courses from certificates to masters degrees. I am proud of the work we do at Holmesglen and the Awards Festival reminds us all of the successful model of education and training that tertiary providers such as Holmesglen showcase.

The Awards Festival also involved our many industry partners and we had over 40 industries represented at the Awards Dinner. It is our relationship with industry, employers and associations that helps us to continue to deliver high quality products, which meet the needs of the workplace and helps students enter the workforce or enhance the skills of those already in the workforce.

This year we had sponsors for the student awards including Aughtersons Lawyers, the Australian Apprenticeship Network, ShineWing, Healthscope, Allianz Global Assistance, the Commonwealth Bank and TAFE Directors Australia. Thank you to each of our sponsors for their generosity.

It is important that the Institute continues to celebrate our students, staff and industry partners. Congratulations to all the finalists and award recipients, we wish you all the best and success for the future.

AWARDS FESTIVAL 2017 WINNERS

LAUREN GRAUNKE OUTSTANDING VCAL STUDENT

VICTORIAN CERTIFICATE OF APPLIED LEARNING

Lauren started her Vocational College journey with Holmesglen after taking a break from secondary school.

During her time away, Lauren found she missed learning and being around people in a supportive environment. Subsequently, she entered Holmesglen with renewed motivation, which allowed her to successfully tackle her new studies.

Lauren’s ambition and optimism meant she saw VCAL as an opportunity rather than a challenge, offering her the chance to take responsibility of her own education.

Lauren discovered that VCAL’s smaller classroom discussions, relaxed environment, and hands-on delivery was a setting where she was able to better retain what she was being taught.

Often looked to as a mentor by her peers, Lauren assisted her classmates with their assessments and personal problems while still managing her own workload. Lauren was also involved in creating two successful radio programs for SYN FM, which gained positive feedback from her friends and teachers.

Lauren now aims to develop her creative flair, with her passion in graphic design leading her to further study elsewhere. In the future, she aspires to work as a creative director in the marketing field.

GREG HOGANOUTSTANDING APPRENTICE WINNER

CERTIFICATE III IN UPHOLSTERY

Delving into a furniture design course, with limited knowledge as to what to expect, Greg discovered his true passion lay in fine timber work and crafted upholstery. Throughout his studies, Greg has offered an unwavering commitment to turning his ambitions into a life-long career.

Every time Greg enters the Holmesglen workshop, he shows a fierce dedication towards his new-found career, which earned him Holmesglen’s (second year) Upholsterer of the Year award. His pursuits were also recognised when he was announced as Apprentice Employment Network’s 2016 Apprentice of the Year; an esteemed industry honour.

A Geelong resident, Greg secured an apprentice position through Gforce and his host employer Banksia Lounges. During his current tenure, he has expanded his professional skills-set to a point where he now helps the entire company with its processes.

Outside of his studies, Greg is a cycling enthusiast who has raced in Australia and the US. He also works in Western Victoria mentoring junior cyclists.

Greg hopes to become a master upholster in the future and run his own business along the surf coast.

JILLIAN HARDYOUTSTANDING CERTIFICATE WINNER

CERTIFICATE IV IN ALLIED HEALTH ASSISTANCE

Allied Health Assistance is a community role, where professionals work with passion and a commitment to making a positive difference in society. These are traits highly reflected in Jillian.

For Jillian, the decision to pursue a career in health was quite personal. With an acute understanding of some of the serious mental and physical issues that afflict individuals, Jillian was determined to use her studies to help other people.

Accordingly, Jillian’s selfless qualities were reflected in the glowing endorsements she received from her clinical placement contacts. Her assistance with Planned Activity Groups, which included aiding clients who had acquired brain injuries or dementia, earned considerable recognition.

Jillian’s teachers affirm she was one of the highest performing students in her class, who always showed empathy for her clients.

American writer Jack London once declared, “Life is not always a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes playing a poor hand well.” It’s fitting that Jillian’s success has, therefore, been as much attributed to her perseverance and resolve to reach her study goals as it has to any outside factors.

ALISON HAYESOUTSTANDING DIPLOMA WINNER

ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF INTERIOR DESIGN

Alison’s reasons for joining Holmesglen were simple yet significant. She was motivated by the chance to pursue something she loved – interior design. While she acknowledges high school was not the right study environment for her, Alison found that coming to Holmesglen allowed her to pursue and excel in her studies.

Respected by her peers and regularly taking on leadership roles within her class, Alison was enthused by the opportunity to learn new skills. While studying the Certificate IV in Interior Decoration, she participated in preparing a decoration and design concept for Holmesglen Moorabbin’s Cilantro restaurant. Not to mention, Alison was a finalist in a national commercial student design competition in 2016. She has also helped a family friend on a full renovation project in Keysborough.

Alison plans to further her studies to help strengthen her professional skills. Moreover, she hopes to follow her interest in designing homewares and, one day, oversee her own business space and collection.

PANHAVUTH KRETOUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL WINNER

DIPLOMA OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

Panhavuth approaches his studies like he does the rest of his life, with enthusiasm and passion. Since joining Holmesglen – coming to Melbourne from Cambodia – he has shown a strong commitment to his education.

Since starting his graphic design studies, Panhavuth’s determination has been reflected in a series of awards and industry recognition. In 2016, he received first place in the Medela breast feeding poster design competition. Additionally, one of his logo designs was chosen for a TV series, ‘What’s Wrong With U?’, which screened on Channel 31. Furthermore, his paper-cut design was selected to appear in the coveted K.W. Doggett Fine Paper 2017 calendar.

Panhavuth has gladly embraced every student competition or design opportunity afforded to him, immersing himself entirely in his artistic pursuits.

In his spare time, Panhavuth is an avid photographer. The device allows him to explore his creative desires, while also helping him meet new people.

ALEXIE BEOVICHOUTSTANDING HIGHER EDUCATION WINNER

BACHELOR OF SPORTS MEDIA

Alexie started his higher education journey unhappily studying a film and TV degree elsewhere; constrained by voluminous theory and sheer student numbers. Not wanting to simply meander through his studies, Alexie started searching for another way to pursue his dreams, quickly finding Holmesglen’s Sports Media degree. The program’s industry focus, which offered various internship placements, proved appealing.

“Everything we do here is celebrated. Having your teachers know your name and know a bit about you is rare in higher education.”

Subsequently, Alexie received the best opportunity to get his foot in the door by producing TV shows, working on magazines and filming at local footy clubs. Additionally, teaching staff were continually forwarding job opportunities and encouraging students to connect across all year levels.

“The [Sports Media] degree is designed to strengthen every aspect of your communication skills. It’s almost like three or four separate degrees rolled into one; journalism, communications, public relations and interning.”

In order to graduate with his classmates, Alexie took on an increased workload to complete his three-year degree in two-and-a-half.

Looking ahead, Alexie hopes to work in digital communication management and eventually in a role managing long-term content direction.

CRAMER DESIGN PTY LTDINDUSTRY CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION WINNER

Holmesglen graduate Dan Cramer has used his education to carve a fulfilling and successful career. After obtaining his building design qualification, Dan’s professional pathway eventually led him to starting his own business, Cramer Design Pty Ltd.

The Moorabbin-based business provides architectural design options around Melbourne and works prominently within the residential and commercial fields. In addition, Cramer Design Pty Ltd has employed a number of fellow Holmesglen alumni.

Fittingly, the achievement of the local company has been widely acknowledged by the industry. Similarly, the company was also recognised at the 2013 Housing Industry Association Awards as, ‘Winner - Townhouse/Villa Development (Design Input)’.

“One of the most interesting comments one of my lecturers once said was, ‘design is about making a decision, backing yourself and running with it because you can keep designing forever’. I use this in my practice today when I need to make an important decision that will affect my business or a client’s outcome on a project,” Dan says.

IMPACT APPRENTICESINDUSTRY CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION WINNER

Impact Apprentices decided to further their partnership with Holmesglen following the successful working relationship they shared with the Institute’s electrical apprenticeship program.

Specialising in small-to-large construction projects to medium commercial and domestic projects, Impact Apprentices help a diverse range of aspiring trade workers receive industry-ready training.

Upon the opening of Futuretech, Impact Apprentices transferred all of their city-based apprentices to the North Melbourne campus.

Today, Impact Apprentices have 32 apprentices enrolled in training at Holmesglen – eight at Moorabbin and 24 at Futuretech. They have made a commitment to have all of their apprentices receive his or her education at Holmesglen and have organised graduate employment through the Futuretech pre-apprentice program.

SKP EVENTSINDUSTRY CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION WINNER

SKP Events has helped nurture Holmesglen’s budding events students for the past three years.

The connection between the company and the Institute extends beyond a simple partnership, with the Director, Simon Patterson, a former Holmesglen events student himself.

Founded in 2006, SKP Events has worked on a range of important local events, including Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival, St Kilda Festival, Melbourne Marathon and the Festival of the 12th FINA World Championships.

SKP Events also takes a leading role in guiding and mentoring students during Holmesglen’s annual work experience opportunity, which see students working at the Victorian State Schools Spectacular held at Hisense Arena and involving over 3000 cast and crew.

“Graduates of the Holmesglen Diploma in Event Management are well recognised ahead of other institutions for the hands-on experience. I look forward to continuing to develop this relationship and exploring other opportunities for Holmesglen students and graduates,” Simon affirms.

VICTORIA POLICEINDUSTRY CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION WINNER

Victoria Police continued their longstanding commitment to community engagement and safety when collaborating with Holmesglen on a range of initiatives.

In late 2015, Sergeant Ric Anderson and Senior Sergeant Jim Jackson, commenced a partnership with Holmesglen on a new crime prevention and international student safety campaign.

Project CEANT, together with Moorabbin Police’s Anti-Vehicle Theft campaign, encourages students to remove all valuables from their cars, remember to lock their vehicles and to report suspicious behaviour.

The initiative was officially launched at Holmesglen’s Moorabbin campus in July 2016. The event included a presentation to various community representatives and an in-person lecture, given by Sergeant Anderson, to international students.

Victoria Police has been instrumental in cultivating and growing the important community message. Permanent campaign signs are displayed in the Moorabbin campus car park and Holmesglen Radio & TV students had the opportunity to create an advertisement for the campaign. In 2017, the campaign hopes to extend to all four campuses, as well as the wider community.

VOCATIONAL COLLEGE WEDNESDAY 29 MARCH 2017

Holmesglen Diploma of Events students once again showcased their artistic flair by bringing the gold, silver and black theme of the Awards Festival into the transformed Zest Restaurant. Managing everything from the AV to the room dressings, Events students ensured that the Hospitality, Cookery, Bakery, Tourism and Events Awards evening ran without a hitch.

Head of Department, Mr Tom Stafford welcomed guests and remarked on the buzz and enthusiasm in the air. He continued by congratulating all students, and that the evening was their night.

The evening’s MC, Mr Gary Paterson, continued in heralding the students in the room. He agreed that each had achieved academic success but also possessed qualities of leadership, teamwork, innovation and compassion.

Guest speaker and Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central member Mr Peter Guttmann, discussed how the world is now at students’ feet. He affirmed that tackling any challenge or adversity would not hamper their progression but allow them new ways to challenge the world, and that each individual can make a real difference. Mr Guttmann recommended and gifted two fabulous books to Holmesglen that reinforced this belief; The Long Road from a Broken Heart, and Dancing in my Dreams.

In total, 17 students were recognised across the course of the evening, each receiving a Circulon Cookware set worth $1,000. The Simplot Scholarship recipients were also announced. The Scholarship, worth up to $10,000, was awarded to students on merit and covers tuition, materials, uniforms and placement opportunities with Simplot, including in their sensory testing kitchen.

The entire evening was serenaded by the soft angelic voices of Cait Van Dord and Emma Wallace. Cait, a self-taught musician and Holmesglen Events student, and Emma, a classically trained opera singer, performed acoustic sets of modern and classic songs from London Grammar to NIRVANA and Johnny Cash, with accompanying piano and guitar.

Guests were able to immortalise memories of the evening in front of a photo wall, which was topped by a glorious installation created by Holmesglen’s Floristry students. The greenery paid homage to native Australian flora, lushly hanging above the satin backdrop, and the entire feature was accentuated by moody spotlights.
