1 Nov 2011 Male Elite Duathlete of the Year Mark Buckingham (Sharky or Bucko as he is known by his Loughborough training partners) was honoured to receive the GE British Triathlon Male Duathlete of the Year Award at the Awards Dinner in November. Despite suffering punctures at both the European and World Championships, scuppering his chances of a podium placing, the British Triathlon Federation made this award in recognition of his achievements this season. Katie Hewison (nee Ingram) who won the ITU Duathlon World Championships in Gijon, took the Female Duathlete of the Year Award. Katie and Sharky have raced on a number of England teams, back in the days they competed in Fell and Mountain Running Races. The pair joined forces with Matt Gunby and Georgina Schwiening in the ITU Duathlon Mixed Relay to win Silver Medals for the GE Great Britain Team. Sharky and his trigold training partner Matt Gunby also celebrated their trigold graduation at the Awards Dinner. Sharky did manage to fit a road race into his busy training schedule last month, when he contested the Brooks Brighton 10k where he finished in 3rd place behind winner Ben Whitby. He is about to have a scan on a troublesome knee injury, but is hoping to be fit to contest the Tinker Cup on 17 December 2011. Mark first took part in the race in 2001, as a 16 year-old, after winning the Junior Christmas Handicap race in the morning. He was first home on that occasion over the old course and the following year he was first over the new course! On 20 December 2003 Mark again won the Ian Roberts Trophy for fastest time and added the Tinker Cup to his impressive list of Club victories. He has finished first on each occasion he has taken part in this race and set the current course record of 40.33 in 2005. Who will be the person to lower the record and can anyone else repeat the "double" of winning the awards for fastest time (which he has won 7 times) and handicap time? Notice to all Club Members and Parents & Guardians The club subscription is due on the 1st of January and with it you will receive an additional form to fill in with emergency contact details FOR all members. This is one form per family and in the case of juniors it needs counter signing by an adult. This form will be kept at the club so that the coaches/group leaders have ready access to it should the need arise. In addition the form has information for parents/guardians in respect of Junior athletes about safety and attendance at the club. Here is a brief reminder to all junior athletes and parents/guardians prior to receiving this form. A new handbook will also be available soon. 1. All junior athletes when attending training sessions WILL attend in the main hall where notices and instructions are given. 2. For health and safety reasons juniors will not remain on the field, in the toilets or changing rooms. 3. All junior athletes who attend training will train with groups under the instructions of qualified coaches, they will not go on runs by themselves or unsupervised groups. 4. Parents/Guardians are responsible for their children prior to 6.45pm and after 8.15 when training finishes. 5. Parents/Guardians of juniors should try to attend the notices at the start of training on a regular basis as this informs the whole of the club of upcoming events, important information and celebrates the success of our athletes. 6. Now that the field at Neiley is getting wet and we have to leave the site for sessions. A reminder to all parents/guardians of Junior School age athletes that the young children are require to have an adult with then when we go off site. This does not need to be one to one and adults can be responsible for friends’ children etc. I am pleased to say that we do have a number of adults attending the sessions. However if your child is attending you need to arrange to be with them or have someone to take responsibility for them if we leave the field. Any problems please speak to myself or any of the junior coaches. ALL athletes must wear reflective clothing when leaving the site. 7. Please take care when dropping anyone off at the club, please don’t stop in the entrance but drive round and drop them off prior to leaving. Also please do not park close to the entrance to the club on the main road as this causes a danger for the athletes returning after being out on runs as it blocks the view of the traffic. 8. Finally all athletes of any age attend at the invitation of the club and all are required to abide by the instructions of the coaches. A new booking in and out system is being prepared at the moment which will require ALL athletes eventually to indicate when they are at training and when they have left. More information about this will be announced shortly.

What a Year!!

2011 has been a very exciting year for me. Having reached the age of three score years and ten you focus even more clearly on doing things today for who knows what tomorrow will bring. People tell me that I am a “silly old sod” for the amount I do and all the rushing around. I can remember coming out of hospital on a Monday and running a championship race on the Saturday and coming last but one. This is just part of the driving force within me that makes me maximise the use of my time. I have completed so far this year 59 races and although my face rarely shows it have I have enjoyed them and felt a tremendous sense of satisfaction and hopefully set an example to club members who do not turn out to race for the Harriers. If I can run and many times finish at the back end of the field, then 99% of our members can put their club vests on and represent the club. We are not a social club but an athletic club and that does not mean we cannot have a great social time as well, I certainly do. Probably my best race of 2011 was the Melbourne Marathon in October. That tremendous sense of satisfaction you get when you cross the finishing line in a marathon, something which words cannot adequately put across. As most of you know I do not and cannot these days do the high training mileage that is required to really perform well in a marathon, nevertheless I got round Melbourne in 4hrs 10mins 23 secs winning the 0/70 category. An engraved medal arrived in the post this week from Australia and it will remind me every time I see it of the wonderful time I had in the country. It is well worth visiting if you get the opportunity.

One of the other great trips of the year was the Pyrenees in August. I stayed with Gary and Debbie Devine in a little place called Perles et Castelet which is not far from Ax-Les-Thermes which is not that far from Andorra. They run a guest house there called Pyrenees Haven which is in a beautiful setting and they look after you wonderfully and the food is mouth watering. What makes it even more attractive to me is the opportunity to run in the area, pretty tough but in breath-taking beautiful scenery. Gary was and still is a very good fell runner and so knows all the run routes in the area and not only that there are some good races around. Debbie also runs but at a slower pace like me. I ran a 13km ace Perlese et Castelet, it was a bit hilly! I came 2nd o/70 to Pete Covey from Bingley. Nothing like taking prizes off the French! By the way in France what ever date your birthday is and your age on that date it counts from the 1st January of that year, hence although I was not 70 until the beginning of September I was classified as being 70 when I ran the race in August. If you go you don’t have to run, you can walk or in winter go skiing. I am back there again in January for a few days and this time with two Harriers Den and Rob Kersey. I can fully recommend a visit, to obtain details visit [email protected].

The other event in 2011 must be my birthday party, what a surprise and fantastic event. Organised by my daughter and son together with some good Harrier friends and ex work colleagues. They put so much work into I, I cannot thank them enough and to all the friends who came and all the presents and good wishes, I will always be so grateful.

Well we are not far away from a new year 2012, I wonder what that will hold for us. Whatever, let’s as a club pull together, we have a lot to be proud of. Get you club vests on and start representing the club in races, if you are not that fast like me it does not matter, it is completing and getting the club colours in good prominence. Equally as important is volunteering to help at club nights, at races we put on and on a wider field volunteer to get yourself qualified as an official and or a coach, athletics is desperately short of qualified helpers. A lot of members do help at the club and we are very grateful for all the help. If you feel you can help in this way and want to know more speak to a committee member and we will point you in the right direction. I hope you all have a good Christmas and even as early as this a Happy New Year to you all. Lets make 2012 a great success for Holmfirth Harriers. Tim Cock

Road Running Championship 2012

Last month I appealed for suggestions to improve the 2012 championship and there has

been some suggestions from members which will be finalised over the coming weeks.

However so you can plan your racing in 2012 the first two races in the championship will be

the Meltham 10k on January 29th and the Huddersfield 10k on February 26th. Both these

local races deserve the clubs support so let's see a big turnout at these events. Keep an eye

on the website for the full list of fixtures and changes.

Road Running Championship 2011

With one event of this years championship, the Ribble Valley 10k on the 27th December, the

men's championship is sown up by Brandon Holroyd for the second consecutive year. Second

and third place is still up for grabs. In the ladies championship it is a three way fight between

Jane Stirling, Debbie Hall and Claire Whitwam for the trophy.

Place Name Overall Points

1st Brandon Holroyd 113

2nd Simon Edwards 84

3rd Matthew Rose 78

1st Jane Stirling 100

2nd Debbie Hall 93

3rd Claire Whitwam 83

Preston 10

On a weekend when there was a number of other races four members of the Harriers made the trip to Preston for this quick 10 mile race. The course is two 5 mile laps and is always well attended and this year saw Andi Jones, the winner of the Holmfirth 15, break the course record in a time of 49:43.

First Harrier home was Maz Khoueiry who smashed his previous best of this distance and recorded a time of 65:50. More importantly he finished in front of his wife Jacqui who also ran a personal best in a time of 66:05. Paul Crowther on his debut over the distance ran a very good time of 70:08. Yvette Arthur performed well to finish in a time of 77:24. Congratulations to all Harriers who took part and put the Holmfirth vest on show farther afield.

Leeds Abbey Dash

This annual event always attracts a good number of Holmfirth runners and this year was no different with 38 Harriers taking part. Richard Smith was first back in a quality field in a time of 32:24, a significant step forward and a great reward for a summer of hard work. Julian Rose was second Harrier 35:08, followed by John Levick 38:16. First lady was Lorraine Smith, who is also showing some significant improvements, in a time of 39:29. Helen Standing and Liz Woodfield made up the ladies top three with times of 42:58 and 42:57 respectively, however Helen was placed higher based on the gun time! Run of the day however went to Tim Cock who took the prize of 1st M70 in a time of 50:40.

Road Relays 2012

The dates for the 12 & 6 stage Road Relay Championships have been announced so get these dates into your diaries early as you may well be selected. Nearer the time will make the selection criteria clearer; however in a change from previous years we will be selecting teams and you will be expected to compete unless you have made the Captains aware that you are unavailable for selection. These events are a high level of competition and it should be seen that if you are selected then that should be a great honour to be representatives for the rest of the club.

8 Nov 2011

With the cross-country season in full swing, fell racing takes a bit of a back seat in November, but if one looks hard enough, there are still a few events to whet the appetite! First up on 5th November was the final counter in both the Senior and Junior championships – the Shepherds Skyline races hosted by Todmorden Harriers over near Stoodley Pike. With the national cross-country relays taking place in Mansfield on the same day, the junior ranks were somewhat depleted – the team consisted of those that were 13 and under! However, there were still plenty of amber vests to be seen and there were some great performances in the mud. The U8’s and U10’s set off together, all desperate to make the first corner without falling in one of the many puddles. After negotiating the bogs, streams and steep descents, first back for the club was Lewis Hodgson, 6th overall in 4.50, ably supported by Lewis Cromack (in what we think was his first fell race) and Freya Durrans. The U10’s run 2 laps of the same course, so twice as much mud and 2 steep climbs out of the stream to contend with. In a great battle at the front, Callum Durrans was neck and neck with Logan Hargreaves (Wharfedale Harriers) for the whole race, only losing out by 1 second on the final run-in, finishing 2nd in 6.54. Sunni Waterman is certainly reaping the benefits of all the training she is putting in at the moment, as she finished 1st girl and 5th overall in 7.23, just ahead of Oliver Rees, 6th overall in 7.24. George Hobbs ran strongly to finish 14th in 8.21, with Harry Hobbs and Daniel Howatson 26th and 28th respectively. Fiona Hodgson was our only representative in the U12’s and ran well in her first year in this age-group, finishing the tough course 22nd overall in 13.30. The U14’s run the same course as the U12’s and in one of his favourite races, Joe Williams finished 9th overall in 11.34. In the senior race, the legendary Ian Holmes retained his trophy for yet another year, heading the record field of 355 and gliding round the 6.25 mile course in 42.24. Not far behind and first back for the club was Alistair Rees, finishing 17th overall in 47.31, whilst Jim Durrans also had a great race, finishing 40th in 50.34. Graham Howatson, a relative newcomer to the fells, was hoping to beat the 55 minute mark and stormed round to finish 65th overall in 53.16. For the ladies, Karen Sinkinson made sure of completing her 6 races in the championship and finished 4th FV50, 224th overall in 66.09.

Fell Championships 2011 With the last race completed, final placings in this year’s Championships have been sorted out. For the men, some 40 took part throughout the 12 race series, with 10 running at least 3 races. First overall was Jim Durrans, who completed 6 races, scoring 141 points. Close behind was Phil Hobbs on 135 points, followed by Rob Halstead on 101 points. For the ladies, although 17 took part during the year, injuries at key moments in the season meant that only 2 managed to complete the required 6 races. This means that Helen Berry has retained her trophy, scoring 88 points (from a maximum 90), with Karen Sinkinson, enjoying life as a FV50 and picking up some age category prizes along the way, 2nd on 81 points. The All-to-Count title goes to Phil Hobbs, who liked most of the races he chose, taking part in 8 out of the 12, with Helen Berry 2nd and Jim Durrans 3rd. For the juniors, there were some great results throughout the year and they certainly entered into the championship in great numbers, with bags of enthusiasm. Placings are as follows:

U10 Boys – 1st Callum Durrans, 2nd George Hobbs & 3rd Harry Hobbs.

U10 Girls – 1st Sunni Waterman U12 Boys – 1st Jimmy Burke,

2nd Nicky Farquhar & 3rd Tiras Waterman

U12 Girls – 1st Erica Byram, 2nd Lucy Byram & 3rd Daisy-Mae

Smith U14 Boys – 1st Lewis Byram,

2nd Eddie Hinchliffe & 3rd Seth Waterman

U14 Girls – 1st Sophie Spencer U16 Boys – 1st Robert Hinchliffe

U16 Girls – 1st Ruby Sykes I’ve also nearly decided on the races for next year’s championships, now that the race calendar has been published on the FRA website and I know where the English Championship races will be.

Finally, other results of note in the last month are as follows:

Really Wild Boar (05/11/11) – Tom Brunt, 6th overall Tour of Pendle (19/11/11) – Tom Brunt, 5th overall.

Glorious Day Brings Out Record Field for Cop Hill Fell Race

On Sunday Meltham AC hosted the Cop Hill Fell Race from the Sports and Community Centre. The race included the YVAA Fell Championships and 167 men and women made the start of this two lap race over approximately 7 miles and taking in fields and tracks and climbing Cop Hill twice. The day was absolutely amazing with clear skies and hardly a breeze, great for the spectators but a touch warm for the runners expecting cooler November conditions. The race was easily won by Dave Watson of Holmfirth Harriers from Liam Dunne of Otley AC in second and Katie Walshaw of Holmfirth Harriers was also well clear of second lady Helen Berry, also of Holmfirth, to win the ladies race. Full results can be found at www.ukresults.net

Last race in This Year’s YVAA Grand Prix Series The last race in this year’s Grand Prix series is over and all that is left is for John Pop to work out the points for the year. Once again this race had over 240 runners finishing and all seemed to enjoy the new course and most came back relatively clean given the soft conditions on this mild but misty day. A great atmosphere as usual at the prize giving with extra prizes for this last race with many age groups having prizes down to 4th, plus of course the spot prizes at the finish and 4 extra spot prizes at the end. Thanks again to the team from Spen for hosting the event and for John and Trish for doing a great job on the results as usual. Before the race started the assembled runners held a minute’s silence in memory of those that “have fallen” and then two laps of the track preceded the race on the new course. The race was won by Dave Watson, Holmfirth in 29:15 from Gavin Mulholland, Stainland 30:02 and Nigel Armitage, Pudsey Pacers 30:59. The Women’s race was won by Margaret Sykes, Holmfirth in 35:10 from Julie Field, Stainland 35:38 and Andrea Dennison 35:49. As usual there were battles for places right through the field and all the way round the lap of the track to finish.

Holmfirth Results

1st Dave Watson, 1st M40; 13th James Durrans, 4th M40; 18th John Ewart, 1st M55; 23rd Gary Graham, M45;

30th Dave Roberts, M45; 45th, 1st Lady Margaret Sykes, 1st M40;

70th Kevin Yewlett, M55; 139th Bill Wade 2nd M70; 158th Tim Cock 4th M70.

Holmfirth Harriers were also presented with awards at the Fell Runners Association annual dinner on

Saturday 12th November.

YVAA Events in the New Year The next big YVAA event will be the Cross Country Championships on February 19th 2012. This is a great course with excellent ground underfoot and barring snow / ice will be on short turf on a gently undulating course at The Northern Racing College between Bawtry and Rossington just south of Doncaster. We will be trying to get at least 30 runners out for this event and all runners over 35 are welcome. All runners count for the team score provided we get at least 5 team members in an age group team. We already have a couple of members who normally run with Pumas or Baby Tigers who have said they will have ago so that means just about the whole veteran membership of the club would be capable of running in this event. Please put this event in your diaries and sign up on the Vets Board or see Rob to say you would like to run. While I won’t be making the entries until early February it would be nice to know who at least thinks, at this stage they would be willing or even like to run!

Some of the 2010 team at the YVAA CC Championships

The multi – terrain Grand Prix races for 2011 are taking shape and it looks like we will be back to 10 races in the series. The Regular ladies team of Lesley, Margaret and Jacqui would love some support from our many other lady vets and it would also be great to get more men out on a regular basis.

Lots more information in the New Year via club website or Vets Notice Board.

Great Harriers Performances 5th Nov 2011

The National Cross country relays championships held annually in November at Berry Hilll park Mansfield has often been compared to Glastonbury for its festival feel, and colourful atmosphere, this year the comparison was truer than ever with heavy rain which started during the first races and continued throughout the junior programme turning the course and it’s surroundings in to a sea of mud, staying on your feet the major challenge of the day. The U13 and U15 age groups raced over the same 2km course with each age group race contested by around 100 teams of 3 from around the country. Three teams of U13 girls had travelled down from Holmfirth to race, many of the girls racing for the first time at this level of competition. Olivia Sykes, Erica Byram and Lucy Byram were the first team home for the club finishing in 18th position in a close race, the B team of Daisy Hinchliffe, Amy Kettlewell and Genevieve Durrans both of the later new to this event running strongly in 68th and the C team of Olivia Battye, Olivia Blackburn and Caitlin Smith finishing in 83rd place, all first timers at this level of competition and with another year in the U13 age group. In the boys race the Holmfirth team of Seth Waterman, Andrew Farquhar and Lewis Bartholomew ran well in the mud finishing in 24th position. With the rain lashing down it was the u15 turn to take to the field. The boy’s team of Aaron Arthur, Aaron Kettlewell and Lewis Byram finished in 38th position, Aaron Arthur running despite a broken hand. Eddie Hinchliffe ran a 1st leg for the B team and coming home in 75th position on the fast first leg. The girls team of Lucy Farquhar, Sophie Williams and Sophie Spencer also performed strongly coming home in 74th position. A number of athletes from the club also ran in the longer U17 and U20 races. Max Kaye and Max Lawton in the U20 men’s race unfortunately unable to finish a complete team the boys ran well and were in 42nd position after 2 legs. Both Robert Hinchliffe and Ruby Sykes ran in the U17 age group races in incomplete teams. Robert coming home 85th on leg one and Ruby in the girls race 51st.

Holmfirth’s leading cross country ladies were out in force with an impressive three teams competing in the 3km, 3-leg course. With all 3 teams finishing within 61 places out of 105 complete teams, the only team to have three teams finish higher was Aldershot, Farnham & District, whose ‘A’ team took silver medals. Warming up for the race felt more like taking a shower for the ladies, as the heavens opened an hour or so beforehand and did not relent until shortly before the gun. On leg one, in which a huge field 122 athletes started, Katie Walshaw set off for the ‘A’ team and ran her usual determined race to finish in an excellent 20th place in 10:55. Claire Leaver had a very good run for the ‘B’ team, with a time of 11:42 in 44th

place and Debbie Hall, who found such a short race tricky to pace, did well to finish leg 1 for the ‘C’ team in 72nd (12:37). Leg 2 was lead off by Helen Berry for the ‘A’ team, who felt strong throughout and managed to pick up a few places to handover in 14th place, in 11:35. Jacqui Khoueiry showed no signs of tiredness after a half-marathon the previous weekend, running a good time of 12:09 and moving the ‘B’ team up to 37th place.

The ‘C’ team gained one position 71st place thanks to a solid run by Cara Penfold (13:28). The anchor leg runners, who were keen to get on with their race having even longer to wait in the damp conditions than most, all did well to improve the final standings. Kath Farquhar had a steady first half and a fast, gutsy second half to bring the ‘A’ team home in 20th place (12:04) in an overall time of 34:35. Maggie Sykes, another team member with a long road race in her legs after the Holmfirth ‘15’ 6 days prior, ran well in 12:25 and finishing for the ‘B’ team in 36th place in an overall time of 36:17 .

Zoe Storr in her first cross country race of the season had a super run for the ‘C’ team, gaining a number of places to finish in 61st place (13:02) in an overall time of 39:08. The gold medals were awarded to the Charnwood AC ‘A’ team who finished in a time of 31:05 and whose final leg runner, Gemma Steel, recorded the fastest leg of the day in 9:49. In the men’s race the Holmfirth men’s team of Dave Turnball, James Little, Richard Smith and Matthew Pierson ran well despite the terrible state of the course for this the last race of the day. With 200 athletes lining up the first leg in the senior men’s race is always fast and furious. Dave Turnball was tripped in the mêlée at the start but managed to regain his feet and handed over to Richard Smith in 53rd position in a time of 17.14, Richard ran well coming home in 43rd in 17.45. James also managed to gain places handing over to Matthew on last leg in a time of 18.04 in 41st. Matthew ran round in 17.18 gaining a further 13 places the team finishing an excellent 28th place overall. The race was won by Stockport Harriers with Steve Vernon of Stockport running the fastest leg of the day in 15.26. The real heroes of the day for the club were the hardy band of supporters who travelled down to cheer on and support the Holmfirth athletes and who were completely drenched by the end of the racing.

Fantastic in the Fog 20th Nov 2011

A foggy damp day in November – perfect weather for a cross country race. Shipley the venue for this the third fixture of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League. Holmfirth Harriers athletes once again in breath-taking action. This race was once again all about great team performances from the Holmfirth athletes as well as individual success. Each and every runner giving their all on this tough hilly course, The results telling their own story Holmfirth teams taking 1st place in 4 of the 10 races and podium places in a further 2. For individual stars of the show it really is difficult to know where to start, From the first races of the day the Holmfirth Juniors set the scene for the action to follow, with Libby Shepherd and Sunnivah Waterman battling it out in a scintillating sprint for the line in the U11 girls race with Libby given the victory but both girls awarded the same time. Equally impressive Olivia Sykes in the U13 girl’s race, leading from the start and building a 13 second victory over local rival Sarah Pickering of Ilkley. U15 boys Lewis Byram played the waiting game on this tough hilly course and pulled out a 20 second lead on Tom Blanchard of Halifax Harriers on the hill second time round. In the senior races also, great performances, Katie Walshaw back to winning ways in the women’s race extending her lead over Katie Parry of Leeds to 25 seconds on the second lap. These race winners aside an incredible 13 other athletes finished in the top ten an amazing achievement for the club.

The U11 boys bolstered by Jimmy Burke’s return from injury achieved second team place, Jimmy and Callum Durrans both running well to finish in 4th and 5th places with Oliver Rees and Fionn Kerry taking the other team spots in 17th and 23rd spot. Also well up the field Ned Johnson 26th, Tom Haley-Porteous 28th Daniel Howatson 29th and Dominic Drake 36th. The U11 girls scooped 1st team spot with ease Libby and Sunny ably supported by Sophie Allan in 5th. Lia Carter showed her potential also in the top 10 in 9th. Eve Middleton and Lucy Whitworth both running well in 21st and 26th. Nowhere was the great team ethic demonstrated more than in the

U13 boys race. Winner of the first 2 league fixtures Seth Waterman who had been ill for most of the previous week really suffered during the race but hung in with team mates Andrew Farquhar and Lewis Bartholomew the 3 finishing in 9th, 10th and 11th place Andrew just pipping the other 2 for 9th. Younger brother Nicky had a great

run in 16th place securing 2nd team spot for the boys. Isaac Shepherd was just behind Nick in 18th and William Johnson 20th. Tiras Waterman moved through the field for his best league finish in 34th, Shea Kerry and Daniel Whitworth also moving through the field in 40th and 42nd places and Adam Christopher with another sterling event in 49th.

The U13 girls clinched the first team spot with ease like their younger counterparts Erica Byram running a fantastic race finishing strongly in third place and sister Lucy not far behind in 7th backing up Olivia in 1st. Such is the strength of the Holmfirth girls at this age group that had a second team been allowed to count Daisy Hinchliffe 21st, Genevieve Durrans 23rd and Anna Charlesworth 25th would have finished in third . Also running well Esme Wilde 37, Olivia Battye 38, Caitlin Smith 39, Charlotte Eastwood 45, Isobel Drake 46, Lily Barr 48, Issy Haley-Porteous 49, Talia Johnson 51 and Olivia Blackburn 54. Having finished third team in both the previous fixtures the U15 boys were amazed to gain first spot, again a great team effort from all the boys with 3 of the 4 counters in the top 10 Lewis Byram 1st, Aaron Arthur 7th and Aaron Kettlewell 10th and Eddie Hinchliffe in his best ever league placing in 12th. George Green in his first year of cross country ran well in 29th. In the girls race Sophie Spencer and Lucy Farquhar both ran strongly to finish in 15 and 19th places.

Robert Hinchliffe was a lone finisher for the club in the U17 men’s race finding the going tough but keeping going to finish in 20th place.

The fog had lifted a little by the time the Senior Ladies were off. Each lap of the three laps of the 6km course took in a steady climb from the start, so the tactics were to start of steady and it certainly paid off for Holmfirth’s ladies. Katie Walshaw lead from the gun and the competition didn’t pose too much threat to her victory as she finished 24 seconds clear of Leeds City athlete Katie Parry.

Back in the chasing pack Claire Leaver made a very good start, whilst Helen Berry and Kath Farquhar paced the first lap well. Keen to ensure maximum team points, having finished second to Leeds City in the previous race in the series, Helen and Kath moved through the field picking off the tiring athletes to finish in impressive 5th and 11th places respectively. Claire Leaver provided excellent back up for the team in 13th place, ensuring a victory and vital points for the league title.

With the league taking place over four races, athletes often compare previous performances and whilst the positions remained fairly static for the leading athletes, the remaining amber vests were noticeably higher up the field this time. Lucy Needham put in a solid performance in 22nd and Debbie Hall improved her previous position by one place in 38th. Cara Penfold finished in a credible 41st, a huge improvement on the previous race, which was also achieved by Fran Whitworth in 52nd. It was only the second ever cross country race for Aideen Farrell who gave it her all to finish in a fantastic 56th place, a massive 26 places higher than last time. There were 89 finishers.

With several of the Senior Men Abbey Dashing and others recovering from injury Holmfirth Harrier’s senior men travelled to Shipley to run in the third race of the Complete Runner Cross Country League series in a somewhat depleted state. This was a tough course with plenty of hills and consisted of one medium and three large laps.

At the start of the race the front runners raced effortlessly up the steep incline and out of sight into the mist. After the first lap there were a group of six runners leading out the field, of which included Holmfirth’s top junior man Max Kaye.

After three of the four laps, Jorge Thomas (Keighley) and Alan Buckley (Leeds City) had broken off the front with the Keighley athlete pulling away to win the race. Max Kaye had a tremendous run finishing in 4th place, 1st junior male and first Holmfirth Harrier. James Little continued his good form to finish in 15th (3rd senior male) with

Alistair Rees in 26th (2nd M40). Jan Durr in only his second cross country race improved on his last race by 45 places to finish in 38th with James Durrans and Max Lawton finishing in 49th and 59th respectively. These results secured third team.

Other Holmfirth results were, Gary Graham 61st, David Williams 71st, Wayne Byram 76th, Kevin Yewlett 101st (3rd M55), Chris Beadle 121st and Tim Cock, who had already raced in the morning in the Abbey Dash, 151st (2nd M70).

Harriers Go West 26th November 2011

A group of nine Holmfirth Harriers travelled West on the M62 to Liverpool to take part in the second race of the McCain’s Cross Challenge cross country series. There are races for all age groups with the Under 20’s and Senior races incorporating the UK trials for the European Cross Country Championships to be held on 11th December in Slovenia. Competition is tough and some of the country’s best athletes take part. In mild but increasingly windy conditions, the races got under way with the Under 11 Boys and Girls race. Holmfirth’s representatives were Jimmy Burke, who is coming back from injury, and Sunnivah Waterman. Both had strong races to finish 6th 7:18 and 15th 8:13 respectively. In the Under 13 Girls race the trio of Olivia Sykes, Erica and Lucy Byram battled it out over a 3km course with Olivia moving through the field in the second half of the race to finish in 4th place 11:26 followed by Erica in 14th 11:59 and Lucy in 16th12:05 both gaining places in the sprint for home.

Racing over the same 3K course saw Lewis Byram, in the bottom end of his age group, had a solid run for 34th place 10:28 in the Under 15’s as did Harmonie Waterman who came 52nd12:37s in the girls race. Last to go for Holmfirth were the Under 20’s Max Kaye and Max Lawton who were racing 6.7km. With Team GB places up for grabs, this was not for the faint hearted. Max Kaye ran well for 38th place 22:03 and Max Lawton, who is constantly improving, came 94th 24:23.

Congratulations must be given to all the Holmfirth athletes as these were all great results given the standard of competition.
