That is a nonsense, in the vast majority of races there is room for all abilities without feeling embarrassed about ones performance. I probably race more than anybody else in the club and am often accused of being crazy in what I attempt, so be it. I only started running when I was 40 having had to stop playing squash for a team because I snapped my achilles tendon. This meant after nearly a year off I would never be able to play at that level again. My eldest son, 14 at the time, got me running by accusing me of not being fit having raced me round a circuit with a hill in it and me having to walk up it. That convinced me he had a point and so I joined Stroud Athletic club in 1982 and since then having moved a couple of times joining Leeds City A.C. on the way and now Holmfirth Harriers. I am writing this article in an effort to get more of you as club members to represent our club in races. Holmfirth Harriers A.C Complete Clean Sweep As They Are Crowned UK Athletics Club of The Year

Mark Buckingham hands the Award to Tim Cock at the Club

Following on from their success at that the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Awards where the club took 4 or the 11 awards on offer including the Development Club of the Year and the England Athletics National Awards in November when they were selected to receive the Development Club of the Year award the hard work or the coaches, officials, volunteers of Holmfirth Harriers A.C has now been recognised throughout the United Kingdom.

On Saturday 4th of December at the U.K Athletics National Awards evening held at Loughborough University, the Yorkshire club who had been nominated by English Athletics went up against clubs from all four home nations for the Aviva Athletics Club of the Year. This being the top athletics club award given out by the governing bodies.

The opposition was very strong but Holmfirth Harriers again came out on top and club member Mark Buckingham who was attending a national training camp at the University was on hand to receive this very prestigious award on behalf of the club. It was fortunate Mark was at the university as the weather and an air strike by Spanish Air Traffic Controllers had conspired to keep a number of other club members away.

The club had been judged against a number of criteria’s and their achievements over the past twelve months were praised by the awarding panel.

London Here We Come…

At December's Committee meeting the following members were given Club places,

Angela Currid, Ali Hassan, John Philpot,

Mike Pennington & Matthew Rose. Good luck with your training and to other club members who are taking part in the London Marathon in 2011.

50 Not Out

Two members of Holmfirth Harriers AC have been honoured by the Club for completing 50 years service. Martin A Booth and Trevor Ramsden both 63 years of age and Honley residents completed 50 years service with the Club in October, joining an elite list of Half Centurions. Both men joined the Club shortly after becoming teenagers and are lifelong friends. They were made Honorary Life Members in May 2001 for services to the Club. Trevor joined the Club in October 1960 and the first race he contested was for the Willie Firth Memorial Trophy, where he recorded the slowest time but received 2nd place medal after the handicaps were taken into account. He went on to win the trophy in 1962 and 1963, on one occasion just beating Martin Booth who had gone the wrong and who no doubt would have won the race but for his navigational error. Trevor first ran the Tinker Cup in 1960 with two other ‘Boys’ but no times were taken. In later years he won the Tinker Cup on three occasions and to mark his latest milestone with the Club he completed the 2010 race finishing in a time of 1:25:41. Martin Booth joined the Club on 14 October 1960, paying his subscription of two shillings (10 pence) to the Honorary Secretary & Treasurer at the time, Mr Raymond Hallas. Martin has carried out many roles within the Club and he was the Secretary for 15 years between 1966 – 1981. In the past he has won the Club 6 Handicap, the Haigh Cup for the Point-to Point race and The Frank Beever Memorial Trophy for the fastest aggregate handicap in the 5, 10, and 15 mile road races. Martin has served as a member of a number of different committee’s including the Yorkshire Cross Country Association, President of that Association in 1975/6 & 1976/7, Northern Counties AA, Northern Counties Cross Country Committee, Selector Yorkshire County AAA, President Bradford & District Cross Country Association 1981 -98 and representative on the English Cross Country Union Committee. The Club President, Ashley Smith presented both men with an inscribed cut-glass tankard to commemorate the occasion before the Tinker Cup presentation at Honley Cricket Club. Afterwards a large group of members and friends enjoyed a Christmas Party at the Galpharm Stadium kindly organised by Kiersti Dickinson who also completed the Tinker Cup race in the afternoon.

Tinker Cup 2010 Members of Holmfirth Harriers contested the annual Tinker Cup race on Saturday 18 December 2010, over a course that started and finished in Honley Recreational Ground and covered the usual course across to Oldfield, Dean Brook, Netherthong, Mark Bottoms, Upperthong as far as Park Head, Holmfirth before retracing the course back to Honley. There was a good attendance on an extremely cold day with temperatures remaining below freezing, presenting a real challenge for the oldest race in the Club’s history, which dates back to 1908, thanks to the support of local landowners who allow the Club to use the historic course. There were 76 entries for the race including 23 ladies, 8 novices who have not contested the race previously and 7 guests. Twenty-nine year old Alistair Langron who first joined the Club twenty years ago set-off in determined style, followed closely by Richard Anderson and some of the Club’s fell specialists. Langron maintained his lead throughout the race and crossed the line in a time of 44.35, with Anderson 2nd in 45.25 and Bill Stewart 3rd with a time of 45.52. The next two places were closely contested with Alistair Reece and Gavin Baxter recording the same time of 46.25. Julian Rank was 6th in 47.00 and a storming run by Holmfirth’s leading lady saw Katie Walshaw finish first lady in 7th overall with a time of 47.50 to retain the Norman Haigh Trophy.

The prestigious Tinker Cup was won by John Levick who finished 15th overall in 51.19, his handicap time of 8 minutes, clinched the cup by 42 seconds, ahead of Wayne Byram 11th overall (Actual time 49.31, Handicap time 44.01)and Alistair Langron who was 3rd on handicap (44.05), winning the Ian Roberts Memorial trophy for the fastest time. Kath Farquhar was second fastest lady (54.17) 23rd overall and Lucy Griffiths third fastest lady with a time of 55.15 in 26th place. The winners of the novice prizes were Richard Anderson who had a great

run finishing 50 seconds behind Langron and Deborah Hall who finished 45th place (1:01:17) and 12th on handicap.

There’s SNOW doubt about it – Holmfirth top Cross Country Club in West Yorkshire

Undeterred by the arctic conditions sixty athletes from Holmfirth Harriers braved the cold and snow in the fourth and final race of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League on Sunday 5th December in Wakefield. For most sportsmen or women a fall of snow signals a welcome mid season break, a chance to spend an afternoon by the fire with a hot toddy or two- not cross country runners. With the league titles at stake in all the age groups and individual trophies waiting to be handed out the racing was as fast and furious as always. Holmfirth athletes were on top form in spite of the difficult underfoot conditions and the performances on the day along with the final league standings confirmed the club’s growing reputation as a force to be reckoned with in Yorkshire.

Harriers record Medal Haul The club came away with 5 league titles out of a possible 10, needless to say more than any other club, also with individual champions in 6 age categories and several others on the podium for the league besides- all in all a record medal haul. First off and with the responsibility of tramping down the snow for the races to follow the under 11 boys- with the league title still on a knife edge it was vital that the boys finished strongly and that they did.

Jimmy Burke once again was at the sharp end of the racing from the gun and finished strongly in 4th, enough win him 3rd place in the league overall. Arron Gill back racing after missing the last race through illness had a great run in 8th place and with Finn Kerry in 15th and Nicky Farquhar 18th the boys were second placed team on the day but were delighted to win the league title. Also running well on Sunday Daniel Howatson 23rd, Owen Dawson 24th and George and Harry Hobbs in 29th and 32nd place.

With the league title already sewn up (having won all 3 of the other fixtures) the girls could have sat back and enjoyed the glory – they didn’t. First Harrier back was Sunnivah Waterman in 8th, closely followed by Libby Shepherd 10th, Talia Johnson 11th, Charlotte Eastwood 12th and Amy Kettlewell 14th all 4 girls racing hard to beat their team mates! Exciting stuff. Holly and Emmy Bailey Taylor also ran well in 22nd and 23rd positions. The girls duly collected their gold medals for league champions.

Like the U11 girls the U13 boys were assured of team gold medals, but with 10 Holmfirth boys in Sunday’s race and 3 finishers in the top 10 there was no suggestion that they wanted to relinquish their grip on the league. Lewis Byram who, with 3 victories already to his name, finished 2nd in a hard race

against local rival Josh Schofield, Aaron Kettlewell seemed to thrive on the snow with an excellent run in 4th, Seth Waterman was just a few seconds down in 7th and Andrew Farquhar finished off the team in 12th. Hot on Andrew’s heels were Thomas Dickens 13th, Daniel Levitt 14th, Lewis Bartholomew 16th and Isaac Shepherd 18th and Shea Kerry and Joe Williams finished off the Holmfirth boys in 25th and 26th respectively. The U13s took the league title, Lewis Byram won the trophy for first overall in the league, Seth Waterman won a medal for 4th place and Aaron Kettlewell one for 6th.

So with 3 league titles in the bag and only 3 races down the pressure was on for the U13 girls. Olivia Sykes showed real determination to finish in 4th – finding the heavy going not really to her liking. Lucy and Erica Byram also worked hard and completed the team in 12th and 16th place respectively, to get 2nd team place on the day and enough to just pip Wakefield Harriers for the League title. Megan Lamb had a good run in 20th spot, Genevieve Durrans next home in 24th and Daisy Hinchliffe the last of the Holmfirth contingent in 31st place. In addition to the league gold medals Olivia also was awarded the individual silver medal. Fantastic results

The U15 girls have performed consistently throughout the league, and their performance on Sunday confirmed their position as bronze medallists. First home for the girls on Sunday was Ruby Sykes in 10th place, Sophie Spencer had a great run in 12th, Lucy Farquhar next home in 19th and Sophie Williams completing the Holmfirth contingent in 28th place, who claimed to have “enjoyed every moment ”.

The U15 boys were glad to be back up to full strength on Sunday. Robert

Hinchliffe toughed it out and held off his team mates to finish in 27th, followed home by Eddie Hinchliffe 27th, Michael Booth 33rd and Aaron Arthur 35th. The boys just missed out on team medals for the league finishing in a very creditable 4th place overall. At the last meeting of the league two weeks previously, the U17 men’s race proved to be one of the most exciting of the day and Sunday’s race was equally thrilling. Holmfirth Max Kaye and Thomas Travis Pollard locked once again in combat with Gordon Benson of Leeds City right at the front of the race. Gordon once again managed to hold off the 2 Holmfirth boys – but only just, Max just 6 seconds behind in 2nd and Thomas 2 seconds behind Max in 3rd place. Max Lawton who has improved with every race this season continued this trend and had an excellent run in 12th place. Jake Richardson in his very first cross country race – a real baptism of fire- ran well and finished a very creditable 18th place.

Max Kaye’s consistent performances in the league this year were rewarded with the league title and the winner’s trophy.

Holmfirth’s Women League Champions .......again Despite a somewhat depleted field in the Senior Women's race, Holmfirth managed to field 6 athletes. The challenge

to the Holmfirth ladies this weekend came from hosts Wakefield AC, whose star runner Julie Briscoe denied Katie Walshaw an unbeaten run of wins in the series. Katie still ran a great race and secured second place ahead of Spenborough junior athlete Jennifer Walsh. Helen Berry, suffering from bruised ribs after a fall during training the previous weekend, ran well though was disappointed to be overtaken just metres from the finish line by another Wakefield athlete leaving

her in 5th place. Katie and Helen had excellent backing from team mates Kath Farquhar and Lucy Griffiths who finished 8th and 9th respectively. Lucy had a fantastic run with her best position to date. It was an unexpected and pleasing result for Kath who had not intended to race until an hour before but was persuaded by the Captain that her result was valuable for the team. And so it was, with the team finishing once again in 1st place with their best score of the series and retaining their title as League Champions. Lesley Ewart finished 29th and secured her title for the Vet 55 category for the series and Yvette Arthur ran well to finish 39th. Katie, Helen and Kath also won their respective age categories (Female 19 - 34, V35 and V40) with Katie and Helen finishing first and second overall in the league. The league has been a great success and an excellent result for Holmfirth ladies.

Senior Men Battle It Out

The senior men were the last to take to the challenging course and with five laps to tackle it was going to be a physical and mental battle in the snow. First back for the Holmfirth men was Jake Rowlands in sixth place, closely followed by Dave Turnbull in 11th place. Alistair Langron was next harrier home in 28th place followed by Nathan Martin in 64th. David Williams in 85th and Wayne Byram in 93rd were the final counters for the team which finished in fifth place. Other Holmfirth finishers were Kevin Yewlett, 102nd, Andrew Kerry, 109th, and Tim Cock in 144th. Andrew Pearson of Longwood won the race. In the final standings Dave Turnbull was the highest placed senior harrier and took fifth place over the four race series. In all over 80 athletes from Holmfirth Harriers have taken part in the league this year braving every imaginable weather condition and wearing the amber vest with pride! With the West Yorkshire League concluded for another year the cross country season is far from over with the Yorkshire, Northern and National Championships taking place in the new year and the trials for the Kirklees Schools Cross country teams this

Saturday we look forward to many more reports of Harriers successes. For full results and all the final league standings go to www.westyorkshireathletics.org.uk

Harriers Juniors Brave Arctic Conditions In Xmas Handicaps

Despite the sub zero temperatures, lying snow and rock hard ground over 30 intrepid juniors braved the conditions to take part in Holmfirth Harriers Xmas Handicaps held at Brooklands Nursery at Scholes. A number of runners had been unable to make it due to road conditions and illness but those who did make it put their all in and this resulted in some excellent races.

The first race off saw the under 11 girls take to the hillside with Lia Carter leading off. As the race neared its completion the field began to bunch up and with 200m to go it seemed that Charlotte Eastwood who had moved steadily through the field and was closing with every stride must pass Lia but as he closed to within a metre Lia responded with a determined sprint holding on to claim victory. Charlotte recorded the fastest time. Sunnivah Waterman overtook Talia Johnson in the final field to claim third with scratch runner Libby Shepherd in fifth. Amy Kettlewell who seemed to feel the cold more than most kept on bravely to the end to finish sixth. The under 11 boy’s race saw the youngest runner on the day Callum Durrans put in an excellent front

running performance to hold off a strong field to cross the line in first place with the rest of the field closely bunched behind him. T iras Waterman just managed to hold off scratch runner Jimmy Burke and Nicky Farquhar to claim the runners up spot with Jimmy just edging 3rd place.

These were closely followed home by Finn Kerry, Daniel Howatson and Aaron Gill, all the under 11’s had ran well and some close finishes warmed up the frozen spectators if not the runners. Jimmy recorded the fastest time.

The under 13 girl’s field was decimated by illness but the trio who took part certainly put in the effort and the winner Lucy Byram even managed a broad grin as she crossed the line, having been the scratch runner she passed the others on the final uphill section. Genevieve Durrans had been unable to make it a family double but showed how she is improving with

a strong second place, from Daisy Mae Smith in Third. The under 13 boy’s race saw one of the most improved juniors of the season Isaac Shepherd take the honours. Isaac who has improved with each run in the West

Yorkshire X-Country League continued the upward trend with a fine run to hold off the fast finishing trio of Andrew Farquhar, Lewis Byram and Ben Dickinson. Andrew managed to hold onto 2nd despite almost missing the finish with Lewis passing Ben in the last 10metres to claim 3rd place and record the fastest time. Aaron Kettlewell whose best events are the 100m and Long Jump showed he can also run over the country by taking 5th in the second fastest race time. Daniel Levitt who had triumphed last year a close 6th

having had a more stringent handicap with the final finisher Shea Kerry not far behind. The final race for the girls saw Lucy Farquhar not only win the race but set the fastest time. Lucy put in a great effort but the cold really got to her and she was like many others in tears as she crossed the line. Sophie Spencer another who improves by the race held onto 2nd with the scratch runner Ruby Sykes coming home in 3rd being unable to close

the gap on the first two. It is fair to say that Sophie Wiliams who completed the field probably disliked the conditions more than most but she kept going at a steady pace to finish. The boys over 13 race saw Michael Booth rewarded for the effort he has put in during the winter despite one or two injury setbacks. He stormed round the cross in probably his best performance to date pulling away from the Hinchliffe brothers Robert and Eddie to take the title and also the trophy for the fastest time. Robert took the family honours by claiming second and Jake Richardson on his handicap debut taking 4th. All the athletes deserve to be congratulated for the effort they put in and most were rewarded with a hot drink and slice of cake at Brooklands Coffee shop after the race. A big thanks goes out to the course organisers who were there 90mins before the races to set out the course, the handicappers and all those who helped on the morning.

Holmfirth Harriers would also like to thank Carl Brook for the use of the fields and the facilities at the nursery.
