HOLSTON CONFERENCE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
2017 DIRECTORY
2017-2018 Holston Conference Logo
Our theme is based on Philippians 4:4-7. The logo design is by Millie Meese of Cokesbury UMC in the Knoxville District.
Millie says about her design, “Philippians 4:4 has always been one of my favorite verses, so I selected the butterfly to symbolize the freedom, joy, and transformation of living a Christian life.”

United Methodist Women’s Day should be observed on a Sunday selected by the local unit in consultation
with the church’s pastor.
Revised July 18, 2016
The Structure United Methodist Women, like the United Methodist Church, is connectional. The major
relationships of United Methodist Women are through: the local organization, the district
organization, the conference organization, the jurisdiction organization, the national
organization. Every level of the organization is involved in mission as they live out the
PURPOSE of United Methodist Women. (UMW Handbook 2013-2016)
Purpose
United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose
purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to
develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through
participation in the global ministries of the church.
The Emblem
The official emblem for United Methodist Women combines the cross and flame. The cross and
flame are ancient symbols of Christ and Pentecost. The shape of the emblem is fluid and free
flowing, suggesting change and mobility. “I now remind you to stir into flame the gift of God
which is within you.” 2nd Timothy 1:6 (NEB)
Membership
United Methodist Women is the official women’s organization of The United Methodist Church.
Its membership is voluntary and open to all women committed to and engaged in mission who
affirm the PURPOSE. Membership in The United Methodist Church is not required.
“Membership shall be open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong and to
participate in the global mission of the Church through United Methodist Women. The
pastor(s) shall be an un-officio member of the local unit and of its executive committee” (The
Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, 2012 ¶256.5).

Plan to attend Assembly 2018
Columbus OH
May 18-19-20, 2018 Greater Columbus Convention Center
WHEN WOMEN UNITE BOLD AND COURAGEOUS ACTIONS HAPPEN.
United Methodist Women is celebrating its 150th anniversary of women putting their faith into action by donating their money and time to help women, children and youth nationally and worldwide. “The Power of Bold” will be the Assembly theme. Throughout this inspirational and educational weekend, participants will revisit the journey of Mary, who boldly risked safety and security to answer yes to God’s call to service.
The 2018 Assembly is particularly momentous in that it marks both the official celebration of the organi-zation’s 150th anniversary and a return to the location of the first Assembly in 1942. St. Louis was the original site for that first Assembly, but the women moved their meeting to Columbus because St. Louis would not allow white women and black women to congregate in the same space. They boldly united and switched to a location where ALL women could meet, worship and stay together.
Past keynote speakers at Assembly have included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, PBS News-Hour host Judy Woodruff, Worldwide YWCA General Secretary Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Grammy-award winner CeCe Winans and more.
When women unite, bold and courageous actions happen. In 1869, eight women came together to send a woman doctor and woman teacher to India and formed the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society. One hundred and fifty years later, that society is the largest faith-based women’s mission organization in the world. United Methodist Women has, is and will be a unique movement for transformation in our church and our world.
Assembly 2018 is a time for fellowship and opportunity to empower faithful women to be stronger disci-pleship leaders in their communities. Through moving worship services, inspiring speakers, immersion experience exhibits and riveting workshops and town hall style meetings. You will leave Assembly with the knowledge, courage and determination to change the world as part of this daring and compassionate 150-year-old movement.
Press Release :Jay Rollins, Communications Producer for Assembly 2018 at https://umwassembly.org/news/
You are a BOLD woman and you will want to attend this life changing event. Early Registration starts Sept 1st through November 30, 2017. Early Registration fee is $295.00.

In the Branding Guidelines the following is stated: “The emblem of United Methodist Women, the cross and the flame, symbolizes our organization. The cross and flame are ancient symbols of the church and appear on the United Methodist Church emblem. Both symbols remind us of the opportunities and obligations of discipleship. Paul’s words to Timothy have fresh and contemporary meanings, ‘I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God which is within you.’ (2 Timothy 1:6). As United Methodist Women, we give our gift of God with others through mission. As parts of our emblem, the cross and flame remind us of our PURPOSE of growing in our understanding of and willingness to participate in the global ministries of the church. They remind us of our heritage of women who pioneer in service for the church at home and in other countries. The overall shape of the emblem is also symbolic. Fluid and free flowing, the shape suggests change and mobility. The women who came before us were at the forefront of movements for change. Always aware of the times, we move with ever changing circumstances rather than feeling overwhelmed by them. We are a group of Christian women with many gifts who are unified by one Spirit. We participate in God’s mission in all areas of life.”
UNITED METHODIST LOGOS—As a part of the National Organization of United Methodist Women, we have been asked to use the guidelines for branding, so others will recognize our organization at all times. The following logos are approved and can be downloaded from the website www.nationalunitedmethodist.org/logos.
