WELCOME TO HOLSWORTHY PUBLIC SCHOOL COMMUNITY 2019 On behalf of all staff I would like to welcome everyone who is returning to Holsworthy Public School this year and also give a special welcome to all our new families. As usual, we have a very busy term. We have our annual swimming carnival for years 3-6, meet the teacher information night-‘Meet and Greet’, parent information sessions on applying for an Opportunity Class and a High School information session. There will also be Harmony Day celebrations, visiting performance on anti bullying, school photos and our ANZAC ceremony. Please ensure you check for notes and information from your children. We wish each and every one of our children a year of fun and learning.

CLASSES 2019 Students have started in their 2019 classes and as soon as all enrolments including Kindergarten are confirmed these classes will be set for the year. The NSW Department of Education (DoE) requires us to audit and then confirm accurate student

Staff have spent many hours planning the class placement of students with careful consideration of the

needs of all of students. Changes will not be possible unless there are extreme and extenuating

circumstances. Sometimes students may feel anxious about a new teacher; or may not be with their best

friend and want to change class. We know from experience that in a week they will be happy, have found

new/old friends and be ready for a productive year of learning. Changing classes and classmates each year

strengthens students’ social development and gives them the opportunity to sort and choose friends wisely.

STAFFING We welcome Mr Luke Vella, Ms Kelly Hutton and Mrs Sarah Sansom to the Holsworthy Public School teaching team. We have also just completed running an interview panel to appoint 3 new permanent teachers to our school. They will be announced in our next newsletter once the process has been finalised by school staffing.

LIBRARY NEWS

Classes from Years 1 to 6 have started coming for their library lessons. Parents will be notified when Kindergarten will begin in a few weeks Monday- 3J, 4A, 4J, 4/5P, 5V and 6C Tuesday- 1L, 2J, 3S, 3/4C, 3/4L, 5L, 5/6G and 6S Friday- 1D, 1P, 1R, 1/2M, 2H and 2K At the end of each lesson, every student is encouraged to borrow for themselves from the library. However, to extend the life of our collection, we insist that any books that go home must be carried in a special library bag to help to protect them from damage and loss. Kindergarten and Year 1 can borrow 1 book at a time, Year 2 - 2 books, Years 3 and 4 - 3 books and Years 5 and 6 – 4 books. All loans are for one week but books can be renewed. Just bring them back on the library day and scan them again. The library is also open during the first half of lunch each day. The students can browse, read, research, play quiet games, draw or use the computers. The Premier’s Reading Challenge begins in March. More information will be given then.

HOLSWORTHY PUBLIC SCHOOL EAL/D PROGRAM

The English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) Program at Holsworthy Public School

supports students from language backgrounds other than English assisting in the development of

skills necessary to achieve their potential. We aim to provide experiences to develop student’s

knowledge, communication skills and awareness of community and their responsibility towards it.

The EAL/D program assists students to learn English and to learn through English. We support

students in accessing language across the curriculum to develop each student’s English language

skills by providing focused support. These sessions of support may occur within the classroom

environment, or through small group or individual withdrawal. Through these sessions the EAL/D

teacher and classroom teacher work together to: support the Australian curriculum; promote oral

language and phonemic awareness; improve writing and spelling skills; focus on developing

literacy skills; focus on enhancing reading and comprehension skills; and provide focused support

in the completion of specific class tasks, eg preparing for an oral presentation.

EAL/D Selection

EAL/D students may include students:

i. recently arrived in Australia with a home language other than English;

ii. born in Australia but speak another language or dialect at home;

iii. born in Australia but have been educated in another language or country;

iv. of refugee background;

v. who speak English at home but whose parents are using English as a second

language occasionally.

HOME READING

Our school home reading program for students from Years 1-6 begins Monday 11 February. Students are expected to read for 10-15 minutes each school night and log this reading into their blue ‘Home Reading Record’ book. Parents are asked to support the program by listening to their child read EVERY night and signing their home reading record.

Each day students will take home a levelled home reader (level is determined by their classroom

teacher) however primary students that have read all levelled readers will begin to read novels as

determined by their classroom teacher.

A separate note explaining the program in more detail will follow.

BUDDY READING-

The Buddy Reading program begins in Term 1 and runs Monday to Thursday every week until the end of

the year. Selected Stage 3 buddies are sent to Kinder, Stage 1 and Stage 2 classes to spend 10 minutes

before lunch listening to them read. This program is implemented to ensure students are reading each day

and gives Stage 3 students the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills.

DEFENCE SCHOOL MENTOR (FORMALLY DSTA) NEWS:

Welcome to our new families, my name is Karen Wilkins and I am the Defence School Mentor for

Holsworthy Public School. My days are Monday and Wednesday from 8.30am to 3.45pm.

All ADF families are invited to my weekly Parent Coffee Catch-up on both Monday and

Wednesday straight after the students go into class at 9.00am in the DSM room with all welcome.

These gatherings provide an opportunity to meet other ADF families, gain local information and

offer additional support. If you are unfamiliar with the DSM room, the lovely administration office

staff will contact me.

Tutoring. If you have posted in within the last 18 months, your child may be eligible for tutoring

assistance. Defence may reimburse fees for educational services that a child’s school cannot

provide. Students may be entitled to reimbursement for an initial 14 weeks of tutoring in any

subject that has been recommended by the school principal or the child’s teacher. If the student

requires further tutoring after the initial 14 weeks, then a further 14 weeks of tutoring may be

approved in some circumstances. This applies to primary and secondary students, within the first

18 months of starting at the new school. For more information, refer to the Tutoring support

information sheet on the DCO website, contact the NSW EDLO, Ken Welsh or speak with your

DSM.

If you are an ADF family and have any other enquires I can be contacted through the

Administration office on 98251479 or via email at [email protected].

Please contact me to introduce yourself and your child to ensure that he/she receives the most

positive support that your child is eligible for from the DSM and HPS.

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Kindergarten has had a great start to “big school”. All the students were looking smart in their

uniforms. We have already started to work on our fine motor skills and are learning to work in

rotating groups.

Tri Skills Gymnastics

Each class has the opportunity to participate in eight, 35 minute Gymnastics lessons over the

space of a term. These lessons are run by an external company that specialise in teaching the

movements used in Gymnastics. The cost for a student to participate is $38 and the lessons are

run:

Kinder: Term 2 and 3 Stage 1: Term 1 Stage 2: Term 2 Stage 3: Term 3 Kinder complete the program twice as these skills are essential to assist development in their

fundamental movement skills.

SPORT NEWS

PRIMARY SPORT

Students in years 3-6 will have their primary sport day on a Friday. At Holsworthy Public School, students in years 3-6 can participate in three choices for Friday sport:

1. PSSA (Primary School Sport Association) competition in a school team where they will play in a competition against other schools in the Liverpool Zone on a weekly basis. Students can try out and be selected in a junior (years 3 and 4) or senior (years 5 and 6) team. We have a summer (Terms 1 and 4) and winter (Terms 2 and 3) season for PSSA. There is a season fee for PSSA which covers bus costs, Zone fees and replacement of equipment. Trials are currently taking place in Week 2 and students successful in being selected in a team will receive their permission note by Monday Week 3.

2. Recreation (Rec) Sport is where students participate in a chosen sport which is conducted by professional coaches under the supervision of a teacher. As we employ outside professionals, there is a cost to participate in Rec sport (approximately $25-30). There are also limited numbers for these programs, so we will send home an Expression Of Interest (EOI) for Rec sports and children need to return this note to be eligible for a place in the program. Students successful in gaining a place in the program will receive a permission note with full payment information. It is a first-come-first-served basis that places are allocated. Expression of Interest notes for Rec sport will be sent home in Week 3.

3. School Sport: Students not participating in PSSA or Rec sport will take part in a teacher-run sport program in which they will develop the skills for a particular sport. There is no cost for students participating in school sport programs.

Sport in term 1 for primary students is conducted in the morning. Students will arrive at school and have their name marked off by their classroom teacher when the bell goes. They will then either go to their PSSA coach for sport or they will be assigned to a class for Friday mornings. PSSA students will not return to school until 12:15pm. Non-PSSA students staying at school will be involved in OT activities in a designated classroom, a curriculum area lesson and their sport program.

Primary Swimming Carnival

The 3-6 swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday 13 February, Week 3 Term 1, at Whitlam Leisure Centre. All students in Years 3-6 are expected to attend this carnival. On the day there will be competitive races as well as novelty events for children to participate in. Students have received their permission note and need to return it to school with their money by Monday 11 February 2019. All students must travel to the carnival by bus with their class.

ONLY students in Year 2 who will turn 8 in 2019 and can competently and confidently swim at least 50 metres are eligible to attend.

Parents are welcome to come as spectators to the carnival. Please note that the pool will charge a spectator entry fee of $3.80 for admission to the pool. The carnival will aim to begin by 9:15am.

ZONE SPORTING TRIALS

Throughout the year children with talent in their selected sport will have the opportunity to trial for

Liverpool Zone Representative teams.

The trials are held after school hours at different venues and it is the responsibility of the family to

transport the child to and from the venue. Trials are encouraged for children in years 5 and 6 but

not limited to that age range depending on skill level.

At times there may be a limit to the number of children able to trial. In this case discussions will be

made with the school PSSA coach and sports organisers as to the children’s eligibility to trial.

Any children who are interested in Zone Trials please contact Mrs Corbett.

Welcome to the P&C Catch-Up section of the newsletter! Please refer to this section of the

newsletter for any P&C related events, updates or news. To contact the P&C, please leave a note

at the Office or email [email protected].

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome! I hope everyone has had a wonderful start to 2019.

Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone who helped and supported the P&C last year. Your efforts are so

greatly appreciated, not just from myself and the P&C, but the students and the whole school

community. Thank you!

Secondly, I’d love to extend an invite for anyone wanting to get involved with the P&C. It is always

great to see new faces and hear fresh ideas. The P&C should represent our school community.

However, not all of us can make an evening meeting, or pop in to the school during the day, but

you can still be involved. Over the coming days an Expression of Interest note will be sent home

to all families asking how you would like to support the P&C. The P&C will use this information to

help run events and distribute information.

Finally, I’d like to invite you to a Community of Schools Community Workshop – Understanding

Anxiety and Self-Regulation in our children, that is being jointly organised by the Holsworthy P&C.

The event will be held on the evening of Wednesday 3rd April in the hall of Holsworthy High. Over

the coming weeks more information will be available, but we hope to see you there!

Wishing you all a safe, successful and happy 2019.
