by minors. After presenting early drafts to

the board, Miller modified the ordi-nance so it would apply only to plattedproperties north of the “urban ser-vice boundary” and not in the town-ship’s rural areas to the south.

Resident Bernard Zandstra saidthe proposed ordinance would burden

police and take away opportunitiesfor kids.

“We should be encouraging ouryoung people to learn about hunting,”Zandstra said.

“This would also stop our ability tohandle critter control.”

Zandstra pointed to a recent articleby Lansing State Journal columnistJohn Schneider about a skunk attack.“This would mean we couldn’t defendour property,” Zandstra said. “Weshould be empowering our people.”

Township Treasurer Harry Ammonand trustee Derek Bajema voted

against the ordinance.Supervisor Stuart Goodrich said

skill shooting and hunting has been alarge part of his family.

“It is very unfortunate, but theactions of some would-be sportsmencreating a danger to the public iscausing this to happen,” he said.

Resident Gwendolyn Rytlewskisaid the ordinance is the right thingto do.

“When I went door to door andasked people about the fact we did nothave an ordinance, 90 percent saidthey were shocked,” she said.

The road commission will bereimbursed once the federal fundsbecome available, maybe as early asOctober.

The fiscal year for 2012 begins in

October 2011.Trustee John Hayhoe asked if

there will still be four lanes repaintedon the street and Goodrich said yes.

Research two years ago by theDDA showed a reduction in lanescould help the area become more“walkable,” but business owners onCedar Street disapproved of the ideaand traffic studies showed the changewould create backups unless a major

change, like a roundabout, would beimplemented.

Conklin also said there will beconstruction on Pine Tree Road fromDell Road to just north of SandhillRoad, similar to the reconstructionof Pine Tree to the south last year.

He also said a federal safety grantwill help pay to realign lanes at theAurelius and Willoughby road inter-section in 2012.

DELHI TWP. — The Capi-tal Area Transit Authoritywill discontinue one of itsbus routes in the townshipbeginning Aug. 29.

Representatives fromCATA told the townshipboard of trustees on May17 that Route 19 — knownas the “Delhi Loop” — willno longer be available toCATA riders.

“According to our rid-ership numbers the routehas leveled and drops off

drastically in the summer,”CATA CEO Sandy Dragoosaid, addressing the board.

Instead, CATA’s Redi-Ride service will expand, particularly in the morninghours when Route 19 expe-rienced the most rider-ship. The Redi-Ride servicetakes riders curb-to-curbin the township, as longas riders request the rideat least four hours inadvance.

Dragoo told Delhi’sboard the closing wasannounced during a May10 public hearing, and that

CATA received input fromthe community concerningthe change.

She said the Delhi Loopstops at several Holtschools in the early morn-ing. The route roughlycircles the Holt Road andWilloughby Road corri-dors.

Once the route is closed,Redi-Ride will expand itshours from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.to 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. in DelhiTownship.

One township residentquestioned CATA represen-tatives about what they

considered empty buses.“Well, you have to

remember that Holt isoften at the end of theline,” Supervisor StuartGoodrich said.

CATA’s Trip PlanningSupervisor Jim Froelichsaid while some of busesmay be empty in Holt, theyfill up as they go into southLansing and beyond.

“More and more peopleare riding the bus,” hesaid.

“We are reaching highsin ridership numbers inrecent years.”

Timely Tipsfor Hiring Remodelers

Red Flags For Identifying the Unprofessional Remodeler

Doesn’t have a license or insurance. All remodelers should be able to demonstrate evidence of both.

Doesn’t write contracts. Without a clear written plan, it’s difficult to know what work you are both agreeing to complete.Expectations should be agreed to in writing.

Requires payment in full prior to starting the job. It’s reasonable for your contractor to ask for payment up front topurchase materials for your job. Shady contractors demand full payment and may leave with the money.

Vastly underbids other contractors. If a bid is way lower than everyone else’s it may indicate inexperience or a methodof cutting costs that severely affects quality.

Cannot provide references. Professional remodelers will always be able to provide the names and phone numbers of pastcustomers.

How to Evaluate A Home Remodeler’s References

Before you sign a contract with a home remodeler, ask them to share with you the names and phone numbers of customers theyhave worked with in the past. Here are several questions to ask the previous customers:

( .,=6+ 2,= @>#) ?@>! -,0?#4-?,# 4"4>0/( '>+ ?@) #)3,+)6)# 34>0?4>0 4 0)4? 40+ -6)40 ;,1 !>?)/ .4! 466 +)1#>! @4=6)+ 4842 >0 4 ?>3)62 $4!@>,0/( '>+ ?@) -,0?#4-?,# 9))& 641,# 40+ 34?)#>46 +)642! ?, 4 3>0>3=3 !, ?@4? 2,=# ;,1 84! !?4#?)+ 40+ -,3&6)?)+ ,0 ?>3) 40+

HOLT — Holt and Okemos took thefield on May 17 in a softball doubleheaderfor “A Hit to Remember,” which is a ser-vice community project the two schoolsorganized in order to bring awarenessand collect donations for the Alzheimer’sAssociation.

Holt raised a total of $530 from ticketsales, a 50/50 raffle and flower and brace-let sales, which will all go to care, sup-port and research programs. That doesnot include the separate amount in whichOkemos raised at their site.

“We wanted to do something like thisfor a while, and was we talked with theassociation and pitched the idea- Theywere excited about it, and so were we,”Holt coach Kim Reichard said.

“I think everyone was excited to knowthat there are younger kids helping tosupport a disease that not many peopleare familiar with.”

As for the games themselves, the

Rams rolled in dominant fashion.Erin Chapman recorded 10 strikeouts

in a complete game two-hit shutout, asHolt cruised to a 4-0 victory in gameone.

“That’s always nice to get that type ofgame for our pitcher,” Reichard said ofChapman.

Colleen Lierman, Haley McFarlandand Lauryn Stubblefield all added twohits in the victory.

In game two, Lierman scattered sixhits and allowed three runs in an 8-3 vic-tory for Holt.

Jasmin Bird went 3-for-5 with threeRBI, and Chapman added three hits and2 RBI in the win.

With the two victories, Holt improvesto 21-6 and 10-0 in the CAAC Blue.

“I think we are playing close to ourbest right now,” Reichard said of herteam.

“We had a really good tournament thispast weekend, and it seems like that wasa big turning point for this team thisseason.”

HOLT — Haleigh Ammonis starting to put up the typeof numbers that Holt coachAaron Smith expected fromhis starting sophomore for-ward.

Ammon scored two goalsand added an assist as Holtdefeated East Lansing 3-1in a CAAC Blue girl’s soccermatchup on May 17.

“She’s a very quickplayer, and we’ve kind ofbeen waiting to see a gamelike this from her,” Smithsaid.

“She seems to be gettingherself in the right spotsand when she does that, everything begins to clickfor her, which was obviouswith the way she playedhere tonight.”

After playing to a 0-0tie in the first half, Holt’soffense came to life in thefinal 40 minutes of thegame.

Holt junior forwardJenny McClumpha scoreda goal less than two min-utes into the second half, giving the Rams an early1-0 lead. Ammon followedwith a goal of her ownshortly after, giving Holt anearly cushion.

But that cushionwouldn’t last for long asEast Lansing senior KaitlinLapka responded with agoal with 14:33 remaining.

Ammon responded withher second goal at the 6:01mark, giving the Rams a 3-1lead.

“I think we had somechances in the first half, butwe seemed to panic a lot,”Smith said.

“We were pretty directand seemed to be settlingfor things. In the secondhalf, we began attackingmore. We went to some dan-gerous areas and took somechances, which paid off forus.”

With the victory, Holtimproved to 5-1 in the CAACBlue, securing second placefor the second consecutiveyear.

“That’s pretty good,we’re happy about it,” Smithsaid. “It’s nice to know thatwe are building on what westarted here last season.”

Earlier in the weekagainst Grand Ledge, the

Rams pulled off a narrow1-0 victory, despite dom-inating for much of thegame. The lone score of thematch came at the 29:18mark in the second halfwhen A Holt corner kickresulted in a scrum in frontof the net. The goal wasscored by Holt seniorMandy Johnson.

Holt’s strong defensekept the Comets at bay formuch of the game, whichwas called due to inclementweather with 12:03 left onthe clock.

The Holt junior varsitygirls soccer team wrappedup a very successful 2011campaign with a convincing2-0 win over East lansing.Forward Lauren Holdenscored both goals.

The Rams finished theseason with a 9-3-3 record.

19Girl Scouts shine

In honor of Global Youth Service Day, Girl Scout troops from the Holt/Dimondale areacame together to make 40 fleece tie blankets to be donated to the Ingham CountyDepartment of Human Services for young people entering the foster care system. These “security blankets” offer great comfort to youth as at least one consistent thingin their lives as everything begins to change around them as they transition intothe foster care system. Over 70 volunteers donated close to 100 hours working tocomplete 40 blankets both at the event held on April 21 in addition to those troopsthat offered to complete blankets at their own meetings. The scouts were able to hostthis event thanks to the Global Youth Service Day mini-grant funds awarded by theMichigan Community Service Commission, The LEAGUE Michigan, and Youth ServiceAmerica.
