Holy Cross Catholic Church A community of disciples of Jesus Christ called to celebrate, proclaim, and share the love of God with all people. July 22, 2018 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Good People of Holy Cross, "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed." I take these words to heart as I prepare to receive Jesus, in all of his divinity, hidden for love of me in the Eucharist. Yes, the same Lord through whom the whole universe was created is about to enter into me; in all my lowliness, littleness, and lovelessness. Like the humble centurion, I am truly not worthy, but a confident prayer surges in my heart: I trust in the infinite depths of your unfathomable mercy! And as I receive, I take a deep breath and smile, for I see Jesus in all of his humanity, gently awaiting all of my love. Before I receive, I ask Mary, the perfect tabernacle of God, to help me taste and see the goodness of the Lord. We join others in becoming what weve received: the Body of Christ. We are embraced by Jesuslove and our hearts are softened, strengthened, set aflame. We come to Mass tired, broken, and paralyzed by our own unworthiness, but we believe in the power of Gods mercy and our souls are truly healed. How awesome is that! Fr. July 22, 2018 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Good People of Holy Cross, "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed." I take these words to heart as I prepare to receive Jesus, in all of his divinity, hidden for love of me in the Eucharist. Yes, the same Lord through whom the whole universe was created is about to enter into me; in all my lowliness, littleness, and lovelessness. Like the humble centurion, I am truly not worthy, but a confident prayer surges in my heart: “I trust in the infinite depths of your unfathomable mercy!” And as I receive, I take a deep breath and smile, for I see Jesus in all of his humanity, gently awaiting all of my love. Before I receive, I ask Mary, the perfect tabernacle of God, to help me taste and see the goodness of the Lord. We join others in becoming what we’ve received: the Body of Christ. We are embraced by Jesus’ love and our hearts are softened, strengthened, set aflame. We come to Mass tired, broken, and paralyzed by our own unworthiness, but we believe in the power of God’s mercy and our souls are truly healed. How awesome is that! Fr.

YOU ARE CALLED TO LIVE OUT YOUR

BAPTISMAL PROMISE What better way than to serve the young church! The Office of Faith Formation is looking for adults and High School

junior or seniors to work as catechist, catechist assistants and helpers during the upcoming school year. In order to volunteer you must have a love for your Catholic faith and a willingness to share that with the young church. Volunteers are needed regardless of language as they can be paired with another bilingual adult. Volunteer hours vary from working in a traditional class 3 Sundays a month from 10:15- 11:25 or helping children who are behind on their sacraments 2 Sundays a month from 11:45 -1:00 or 2 Wednesdays a month from 6:45-8:00. The Youth Ministry team meets on 3 Sunday nights a month from 6:30 -8:00 and is looking for adults and young adults to be mentors for our teens. “God does not call the qualified, but qualifies the called” so do not worry if you think you do not know enough, training will be provided and you can learn a long side the children or youth you are serving. If interested in living out your call, please contact Barb Garvin in the Faith Formation Office at 678 689-2819 ext. 4 or by email at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.

The Youth Ministry is inviting all families to help participate in this Summer’s Family Service Project. Together with The Soul Project we are trying to reach the goal of providing hope to others through the gift of shoes. We are collecting all slightly worn pairs of shoes from all sizes (toddler to adult). Nearly 300 million children are in need of shoes around the world. A simple pair of shoes can prevent serious injury, infections, and diseases. We can transform tears into smiles

through the gift of shoes. Please join the humanitarian efforts to GIVE the GIFT of SHOES. We will be collecting shoes starting from June 24th to July 29th. There will be a collection box near the Youth Ministry office. For more information on how to contribute please contact Carlos Gutierrez, Youth Minister (678) 689-2819 ext. 3 or [email protected]

3 o [email protected].

STEWARDSHIP Catholic Traditions Explained

Question: If God knows everything we do, why do we need to go to Confession?

Answer: Another term for the Sacrament of Confession is the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We go to this sacrament not only to confess our sins, but to be reconciled with God. Of course, this begs the question, "If I can pray to God on my own, why can't I be reconciled to God on my own?" In the seven sacraments, we recognize the importance of community. Sacraments like Baptism or Matrimony happen in the context of the wider church to remind us of the communal impact of our lives. We are not alone in our walk of faith! We don't need to confess our sins in front of the whole community -- thank God! But going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a tangible reminder that our sins affect not only ourselves and our relationship with God, but others as well. Jesus gave his Apostles authority to forgive sins in his name. Through this sacrament, we are really, truly forgiven by God Himself. We receive an outpouring of grace and strength to sin no more and our relationship with Christ and his Body, the Church, are restored.

WHY DO WE DO THAT?
