Fifth Sunday in Lent

Good Lenten People of Holy Cross, Lent invites us to examine our actions, our thoughts, our character, and our priorities with soul-searching honesty. Using the mirror of scripture, and the map of Jesus’ determined march toward Calvary, we are called to look deep inside, to discover the hidden recesses of the heart where sin can hide and multiply, and then to confess and repent of that sin before a loving and forgiving Lord. We are not called, during Lent or any other time, to spend that same energy exposing everyone else’s sins. And yet, from gossip magazines to TV headlines, from the whispers shared over coffee about the latest rumor, to the headlines in the local pa-per, we seem to be bombarded by the public display of private failures; whether those failures are moral, fi-nancial, or personal. What is this judgmental spirit that we hurl against our humiliated neighbor? Jesus loved sinners and believed there was a future on the far side of failure for those who would accept God’s grace, and be changed by it. If Jesus did not hurl stones, how dare we? When Jesus told the woman to “go, and sin no more,” where do you think she would be able to go? Where would she find a community that would welcome her, and give her a second chance? I hope she could go here, to Holy Cross Parish, don’t you? Fr. 40 DAYS TO RAISE THE ROOF We have 11 leaks in our church roof. Consequently, our new organ has not been working, paint is peeling, drops falling on heads, and when it rains, it really pours! The good news is our Finance Council has approved the use of our savings to install a new roof which will cost $150K. In Lent, we are called to sacrifice and there really is no place like home. Both the Finance Council and Pastor’s Advisory Board are encouraging parishioners for a one-time gift to help defray the cost of the roof as part of your Lenten sacrifice. We are asking each individual or family to take an envelope and pray about this offering. Our savings will take a substantial hit; every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference! Think about denying yourself something(s) during these holy days and help us Raise the Roof! Envelopes are available in the narthex. My hope and prayer is that we will not need to touch our savings and so I leave this in God’s hands and your good and generous hearts. Will share total Easter Sunday. Fr. Jude Michael
