“The child’s father and mother were amazed at what

was said about him…” (LK 2). The work of the

Lord continues to amaze us every day in every age.

Joseph and Mary were experiencing amazing events (angel

dreams, angel apparitions, a Holy Spirit baby) and still they were

amazed at what Simeon foretold about Him. The wonder of this

season is the miracle of hope. We know Jesus came and we hope

He will come again. In the meantime, we witness answered prayer

every day when a son gains a foothold in sobriety, a daughter

makes peace with a mother, when a family reunites after many

years of silence, when Christmas is celebrated again after a death

or a divorce, when a Family Promise guest family moves into their

new place. Many answered prayers fill our lives. Many more will

be prayed every day of 2018. And yet, He who is our hope contin-

ues to answer, continues to be faithful. And we, like Joseph and

Mary, continue to be amazed.

For questions or ways to help with Family Promise or serve in the

Monsignor House please feel free to call Kathie at 781-5033.

“…as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” -

COLOSSIANS 3:13

Forgiveness – one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s

amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with

someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take

this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone -

maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-

worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or

text someone right now. Musicians Rehearsals Wednesdays at 7:00pm. You

are invited to join the music ministry ~ All voices and

most instruments are welcome to help lead the music. For more

info, contact Kody Diekhans at (406) 799-2626.

Liturgical Bits and Bytes ~ Liturgical Colors: On a Sunday

before Christmas, a visitor to our parish looked out over the

gathering congregation and remarked, “Isn’t it great to see so

many people wearing red for Christmas?” I politely agreed. But

inside I knew another reason: The local football team had a

game that afternoon, and a good many church-goers were actu-

ally sporting the team colors.

Purple vestments and hangings in church during Lent make

our eyes take notice. Before we sing about these forty days,

before we notice the Glory to God is missing, before they sub-

stitute a new Gospel acclamation for that word we’re not sup-

posed to say, our eyes have meditated on purple and told us a

new season has come.

Why do we have liturgical colors? Why does the church envi-

ronment change so drastically? And how and why do they af-

fect us?

Even in the secular world we associate colors with particular

celebrations: red and green for Christmas, purple and yellow for

Easter, red-white-and-blue for the fourth of July, white for the

bridal gown. Schools have colors, so do doctoral robes and, of

course, sports teams.

The early church used only one liturgical color: white. Fa-

vored for the newly-baptized, it symbolized the pure new life

they attained in Christ. That white garment returns several

times in our faith life to remind us of our baptismal clothing ~ Com-

pletion of Initiation, weddings, the pall at funerals. Colors were few

for a simple reason: Colored clothing was so expensive in those

days that only the wealthy could afford it.

Not until 12th-century Jerusalem, when dyes were more common-

place, did liturgical colors start to become law. After a false start

(they wanted black for Christmas and blue for Epiphany) the 13th

century dawned with Pope Innocent III’s decree for the colors we

basically follow today: white for festive days and saints, red for

martyrs and the Holy Spirit, green for the daily life of what we now

call “ordinary time,” and violet for the penitential seasons like Lent.

Violet, together with blue and black, shared the range of colors for

mourning. Hence, even though purple was originally one of the most

expensive dyes to obtain, it came to symbolize a season of mourning

and cleansing—a time to die to ourselves and live for Christ. Funer-

als today most commonly employ white, reflecting our belief in life

and resurrection with Jesus Christ after death.

Liturgical colors still work their magic, helping us meditate on the

seasons of the year and the meaning of life. Paul Turner Copyright © 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #170, San Jose, CA 95112

Thinking about Separation or Divorce? – Is your marriage

or that of a relative or friend heading for divorce? Do you know how to

save that marriage? Or do you feel helpless? Retrouvaille is designed

to help troubled marriages regain their health. It helps spouses uncover

or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought

them together. The program is highly successful in saving hurting mar-

riages, even bringing reconciliation to couples who have already sepa-

rated or divorced. Retrouvaille is for any couple who would like to

rediscover their marriage and improve communication. For more infor-

mation about an upcoming Retrouvaille Weekend program for couples,

Loaves + Fishes

There is a great opportunity for coming in the new

year. The Diocese of Great Falls-Billings is hosting a

webinar series called Loaves + Fishes. These webinars,

through Our Sunday Visitor, will be offered live

monthly on the second Tuesday of every month at noon

and a recording of the webinar will be available the

following day. The link to these webinars is posted on

our parish website home page: hsparishgf.org.

You can understand the Bible!

If you want a better understanding of our faith, and a deeper relation-

ship with God, then you can join us for The Bible Timeline study, a

Catholic Bible study, beginning January 14. By being a part of this

study, you will not only benefit personally, but you will also help to

bring a profound renewal in our parish as we all grow closer to Christ.

This study will be led by Fr. Doug and Deacon Pete.

We need your input on the best time on Sundays to meet. Please

call the office and let us know if 1:00, 3:00 or 5:00 work best for

you. Other days and times may be available if there is enough in-

terest.
