THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all people for all time. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Parish is a loving, caring community of devoted and committed Catholic Christians. Our mission purpose is to spread and deepen the Kingdom of God among all people. Our aim is to carry out this mission through our strong tradition of faith and family, through a strong sacramental and liturgical life, through a total Catholic educational program, through a ministry to the social needs of the community and through evangelization.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVID Ash Wednesday, I preached about the sweet flavor of the “ruby red shrimp” and how so very deep into the water you must go to catch them.. Lent is our time to cast our prayer nets deeper into our hearts to strengthen the sweetness of our relationship with the Lord. It takes work, commitment, criticism at times and sacrifice. On that day which was also Valentine’s our country suffered another senseless act of inhumane violence, with the shooting in FL. Since Columbine there have been more than 300 mass shootings in churches, schools and public gatherings the U.S. The cost has been thousands of innocent lives; destroyed no less violent than abortion itself, yet we have become almost immune. This should be one of the most pressing issues of “Right to Life” in our church and country.

One minister wrote these 5 points of prayer following the FL shootings. 1. Pray for peace and comfort for those directly affected 2. Pray for a change in the environment of attacks on churches & schools 3. Pray for a unity of political parties and families against violence. 4. Pray for people to be more compassionate to humanity 5. Pray for people to come back to God.

These are important but or they enough? Isn’t it time to be proud of words like values, discipline, integrity, compromise, respect amid diversity and acknowledgement of a higher power, God. Yes, we need better health care; especially mental health but that doesn’t remove our responsibility to report the dangerous or the unbalanced even within our own families. ENOUGH excuses, we need solutions. Prayer must be accompanied by visionary action and courage. Prayer on our knees, that doesn’t promote active change isn’t enough. We can talk and set up planning commissions for years without action and it just remains a dream. Look at how many times the government has done studies on our need for a new bridge, yet here we are with no action, a growing traffic problem and less highway safety.

I don’t know the answer but I do feel CHANGE begins in the HOME. We need the nuclear family be restored, as much as possible. It is the place where we first meet the Lord and his Gospel, “love as I have loved you. Take up a cross and follow me”. Chirst was never satisfied with violence and hatred. Families and our Church can be the sources of radical change for the good. They are our primary means to resurrected and glorious life. It’s why at Holy Family we pray the Prayer for Racial Harmony each week.

This Second Sunday of Lent is St. Mark’s account of the Transfiguration. As it was good for Peter, James & John to know Christ’s change is a “radical change”, we need to become a source of this change. Take God’s words actively to heart this week, “this is my beloved Son. Listen to him” Mk. 9:7.

Some prayer actions during this Lent that may inspire a deeper response are the Stations of the Cross, Adoration Time, The Light Is On For You and Taize Prayer Around The Cross, (healing service) March 15th at 6:30 PM.

Enough is Enough! Go deeper into your prayer this Lent and become active in radical changes “respecting life” especially for the very innocent.
