June 9, 2019 Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday
The Solemnity of Pentecost: Empowered by the Spirit
They gathered in the Upper Room fi#y days a#er Easter where Jesus told them to wait. Then under the signs of wind and tongues of fire His Holy Spirit filled their hearts and souls. The Holy Spirit was given to the followers of Jesus Christ. And the living Church is born. Today is the birthday of our Church. Each one of us has been empowered by the Holy Spirit by Bap!sm and Confirma!on to con!nue the work of our Savior. And people who are searching will no!ce how God is the center of your lives. The Holy Spirit is working within you and through you reaching out to others. Good Catholic parents share their Catholic Faith with their children and rejoice as they see their children growing in their spiritual life. Such parents realize that Catholic schools and religious educa!on programs can only build upon the teachings and exam-ples of the parents themselves in building a solid spiritual founda-!on for their children. As they watch their children praying, they realize that somehow, mys!cally, spiritually, God is working through them. And their work, your work, the work of raising children for the Lord, is the work of the Holy Spirit. Good Catholics reach out to those who need help, perhaps to seniors, perhaps to the homebound or the hospitalized, perhaps to the grieving, perhaps to those in nursing homes or in prison, or they spend !me assis!ng with various chari!es. And their work, your work, the works of mercy, is the work of the Holy Spirit. Good Catholics who have various talents use them to build up God’s Kingdom in their parish as musicians, lectors, ushers, extraordinary ministers, servers, and helpers at fundraisers. Young and old do their best to promote moral goodness in school ac!vi!es, sports and community projects. And their work, your work, is the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is alive in the Church, right here, right now. We encounter His presence on a daily basis in every aspect of our lives. We are inspired to reach out to others. We have been empowered to con!nue the work of Jesus Christ. People are longing to find meaning in their lives, purpose, and fulfillment. They are longing for the spiritual. Perhaps they are wai!ng for us to proclaim with our lives that Jesus Christ is Lord. Today and everyday is Pentecost. The Opening Prayer for the Mass of Pentecost says it well: “Father of Light, from whom every good gi! comes, send your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind, and by the flame of your wisdom open the horizons of our minds. Loosen our tongues to sing your praise in words beyond the power of speech, for without your Spirit man could never raise his voice in words of peace or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord.” Fr. Tom

June 10: Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church
Welcome to one of the newest feasts in the Catholic Church! The feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, was established by Pope Francis in spring 2018. This memorial will be celebrated every year on the Monday a#er Pentecost. While the formal celebra!on is new, the honor is as old as the Gospels. Jesus spoke few words on the Cross, but several of them were addressed to his mother and the apostle John. "Woman, behold your son." "Son, behold your mother." This means far more than simp-ly someone to care for Mary as she got on in years and someone for John to celebrate Jewish fes!vals with. John represents all of us, the Church. Jesus entrusted Mary to us as our mother. At the end of the historic Second Va!can Council in the midst of tumultuous !mes, Bl. Pope Paul VI formally declared Mary as Mother of the Church and invited us to pray to her under that !tle. With our recent celebra-!on of the birthday of the Church at Pentecost, we remem-ber that every birth has a mother. Happy Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church!
