Chair), Brian Piel, Dean Prather, Patty

Rieger, Patti Ries, Rodney Simpson (Co-

Chair), and Fr. Philip Egan.

RECONCILIATION

Second Saturday of each month, 3:30-

4:30 p.m. or by special appointment.

Communal penance services are

scheduled during Advent and Lent.

BAPTISM

Expectant parents should enroll in our

Jordan Program, a preparation class

for baptism, early in pregnancy and

before selecting godparents. The Jordan

Program is held once a month. Parents

must be registered, participating

members of the parish for six months

prior to scheduling the baptism. Baptisms

are scheduled the 2nd Saturday of each

month at 11 a.m. or the last weekend of

the month after the 11 a.m. Mass. To

register for the Jordan Program, please

call the parish office.

MARRIAGE

Couples intending to marry should

contact the parish as soon as there is an

agreement to marry. At least nine (9)

months is needed before the anticipated

wedding to prepare for the Sacrament

of Marriage. In order to begin marriage

preparation, one party must have been

a registered and active member of Holy

Family Parish for at least six months.

SICK

Please notify the Parish Office when a

member of your family is hospitalized or

confined to home. It is the responsibility

of the family, not the hospital, to notify

the parish. Due to privacy laws,

parishioners who are hospitalized must

indicate at the time of admission that

they want to receive communion. Those

who desire continued visits in their home

during convalescence should contact the

parish office.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION

Our Parish School of Religion offers

religious education classes for children

Pre-K through high school. Session

information may be found in the

Religious Education Section on page 7.

Our parochial school of choice is St.

Charles. You also may choose to

continue your Catholic education at St.

Pius X High School.

STEWARDSHIP

Holy Family Parish believes stewardship

is a way of life. As a parish, we need to

strive to be better disciples of Christ,

supporting and nurturing one another. As

caretakers of God’s spiritual and

worldly blessings, we show our gratitude

by sharing our time, talent and treasure

with our family, our community and our

parish. We strive toward the Biblical tithe

of 10% giving of our time, talent and

treasure back to God: 6% to our

parish, 1% to our diocese, 3% to other

worthy causes. Each one of us is called

to discern what we can give back of

ourselves, remembering everything we

have and everything we are is a gift

from God.

PARISH REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP

Holy Family welcomes all who worship

with us. We’d like to invite you to join

our parish family, especially if

you live in this area. Please

call the parish office or

introduce yourself after Mass;

we want to get to know you.

Registration in the parish can be made

by completing a registration form. A

form can be obtained through the parish

office, from the magazine rack inside

the main church doors or online at

www.holyfamily.com/parish-forms.

SEXUAL ABUSE

The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is

committed to combating sexual abuse in

the Church. If you are a victim of sexual

abuse, or if you observe or suspect

sexual abuse:

1. Call the Missouri Child Abuse Hotline

at 1-800-392-3738 (if the victim is

currently under the age of 18), and

2. Contact your local law enforcement

agency or call 911, and

3. After reporting to these civil and

law enforcement authorities, report

suspected sexual abuse of a minor or

vulnerable adult to the Diocesan

Ombudsman, Jenifer Valenti, at

816-812-2500 or

[email protected], if the abuse

involves a priest, deacon, employee

or volunteer of the Diocese of

Kansas City-St. Joseph.

The Diocese has a sincere commitment to

providing care and healing resources to

victims of sexual abuse and their

families. Please contact the Victim

Advocate Kathleen Chastain at 816-392

SHARING THE GOSPEL –

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Whoever does not accept the kingdom

of God like a child will not enter it.” This

verse is part of a beautiful reflection on

childlike faith. We’re reminded of the

innocence of children, how eager they

are to experience life and how quick

they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it

with the story that immediately proceeds

it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the

lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of

thorny moral conversation one typically

has in front of children. Yet here we are.

Jesus’ response goes further back then

the Mosaic law. “From the beginning,

God made them male and female. The

two shall become one flesh. What God

has joined together, no human being

must separate.” Jesus cites a particular

set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2,

before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and

Eve possessed original innocence. How

eager they were to encounter one

another and to explore the garden! How

immediate their initial trust in God. We

no longer live in Eden. As we age in our

fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded

and betrayed. We become hardened to

the beauties of life. We’re quick to find a

way around difficult moments.

In brief, things become complicated as

we lose our innocence. The teachings of

Christ and the Church on sexuality

become more challenging or more

objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in

today’s Gospel. His invitation is not to

compromise with our broken reality. It is

a return to beauty, to the fullness of life

as it was meant to be. We can affirm

our trust in God. We can view life with

gratitude. We can experience healing

of our lost innocence. This is possible

today, now, by grace. Indeed, “the

kingdom of God belongs to such as

these.”

A MOMENT WITH POPE FRANCIS

The Discernment of “Irregular” Situations

Given the immense variety of situations we have mentioned here

[see prior two bulletins], it is clear that no new set of rules that

would apply to all cases is possible. What is possible is to direct

the pastors of the Church to undertake discernment of each case,

recognizing that the degree of responsibility is not the same in all

cases and, therefore, the rules may be applied differently from

one case to the next. This is also the case regarding the

sacraments and who is allowed to receive them, since in a

particular case, no grave fault may exist. In this case, what I

taught in Evangelii Gaudium 44 and 47 [see below] applies.

Priests must accompany these people to help them understand

their situation and be clear in their conscience, and this

accompaniment must flow from humility, discretion, and love for

the Church. We should never appear to have a double standard,

and the burden for this falls on the pastors of the church.

— Excerpts from The Joy of Love

Reflection: What do you hear the pope teaching us in this

article?

Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) 44:

Those who pastor others in the faith, guiding them in pastoral

ministry, should do so with mercy. The circumstances of one’s life

may have a great impact on one’s ability to follow the precepts

of the Church. Mercy. Mercy. It is the way we attract others to the

faith. This includes the confessional, which should produce joy, not

fear. Affirm every small step a person takes, because God’s love

is at work in people regardless of their failings.

Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) 47:

When I say that the doors of the Church should be open, I

mean that the doors should, literally, be open to allow

anyone moved by the Spirit to pray. They should also be

open in the sense that our hearts are open to anyone who

comes to us. This is true for baptism, but also for Eucharist. The

Eucharist is not an award for good behavior; it is a “powerful

medicine and nourishment for the weak.” We should consider

the pastoral consequences of this but be bold in our actions.

God gives grace; we don’t.

Job Opportunity

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is seeking a

Director of Social Services, responsible for planning,

directing, and implementing a variety of social service

programs that target the needs of the poor in our downtown

community, particularly the homeless, materially poor,

disabled, and elderly. The position is full-time based upon

40 hours per week. The parish offers a comprehensive

benefits program, including medical, dental and vision plans,

STD/LTD fully paid by the employer, retirement plans

including a 403(b) plan and a defined benefit pension plan.

Paid time off includes generous vacation and sick leaves,

plus paid holidays.

Holy Family Parish was blessed to have Fr. Robert Stewart

as our pastor from 1993 - 2004. In honor of his devotion to

our parish and parishioners, Holy Family is collecting funds

to dedicate a new Presider’s Chair in Holy Family’s

remodeled church in honor of Fr. Robert. If you would like to

donate to this effort, please visit our website,

holyfamily.com, and click on the link. You may also send a

check to the parish office, noting the memo line “Fr. Robert

Fund.”

Together We Grow Capital Campaign News

and Updates: We’re On Our Way

We are happy to report that our campaign pledges and

diocesan gift brings our total to: $3,316,631.

Expansion Plans Underway

At the beginning of the campaign,

parishioners were asked to bring

forward a rock and place at the

foot of the altar. This was a

representation of us as the living

stones of the church bringing

forward our gifts to build our church

on rock and not on sand. Father Phil blessed the rocks and

the work that was before us. Later this month, those blessed

rocks will be placed in the concrete under our future altar.

The steel beams for the church are scheduled to be here

very soon. During the weekend of October 13-14, Holy

Family is tentatively planning for one of the beams to be

available for parishioners to autograph. We encourage

everyone to sign their names, and their favorite bible verse

or personal sentiment. This beam will then be used in the

building of our new worship space.

As always, thank you to everyone for your prayers, faith-

filled support and generosity! Questions may be directed to

Fr. Phil, Marie Relic or Patty Rose.

Pipe Organ Project

Thanks to the many many folks who contributed to our

matching grant for the organ project! We have exceeded

our matching goal and raised $35,391.15! But.... there is still

$20,000 left to finish the project, so if you would like to

assist with this, any amount is very much appreciated! To

donate, go to holyfamily.com, or simply place a check in

collection basket with the memo line designated ORGAN

PROJECT.

Extraordinary Needs Wish List

Several amenities have been placed on a “Wish List” as we

focus on primary construction needs. Other items, while

included in the core budget, may be of special interest to

parishioners who may want to make an extraordinary

campaign gift. The items included on this list are:

Devotional Furnishings and Art, Mary of Nazareth Bronze Cast

Worship Environment, Liturgical Furnishings and Altar

Accent Wall

Exterior Art, Newly fabricated metal and stone cross

Holy Family Youth Area, Special Furnishings and Extras

Visit our website, holyfamily.com, with a link to donate or

note your wish list item on the memo line of your check.

Joys and Concerns

We recently lost two of our parishioners, Joanna Huff (cousin

of Dee Beerup) and Bryce Granberg. Also, John Braman,

father of parishioner Racheal Szarwinski has passed away.

Please keep the families of these individuals in your prayers

and also pray for the repose of their souls.

Coats for Kids

The Holy Family Knights of Columbus Council is collecting

“Coats for Kids” during October and November this year. All

donations that match needs of the Giving Tree campaign will

be given to the Giving Tree. When those needs are filled,

Holy Family will continue to collect coats for

the Project Warmth, KMBZ Coats for Kids.

Please donate your new or gently used coats

to this worthy cause. Look for the barrels in

the parish hall or the classroom hallway

starting in October. Cash or check donations

are also being accepted. Please make checks

payable to the Knights of Columbus. If you

have any questions, please contact the parish

office.

Trunk or Treat

Holy Family’s Trunk or Treat is almost

here! Plan to bring your kids, neighbors

and friends on Saturday, October 27,

from 7 - 8:30 p.m. for a fun and safe

evening. There are a few ways that you

could get involved in this fantastic event:

Sign up your trunks!

We need a lot of

decorated trunks to

make this a successful

event for the kids.

Please RSVP your trunk

to either Mindy Lehman at

[email protected] or Rob Lickteig

at [email protected].

Donating candy will help to replenish

the trunks and activities that run out

throughout the night. Please leave

donation on the table in the classroom

hallway.

We need teen and adult volunteers!

If you are the parent of a middle or

high school student, your teens can

help! Holy Family’s teenage worshipers

will be running the show at Trunk or

Treat. Areas available to help include

games, lot patrol, inflatable monitoring

and other duties. Adults will assist at

the s’more station, the voting booth and

with making popcorn. Let Rob or Mindy

know if you or your teen can help.
