Holiday Parade of Lights This year, Holy Family will be participating in the Holiday Parade of Lights in downtown Fond du Lac on December 7, at 4:15 pm. To keep our costs down, we are looking for donations of battery operated Christmas lights and AA batteries to use on our float. If you would like to make a donation, please drop off any battery operated lights or batteries to the Holy Family Office by December 4, care of Eva Thelen-Dunphy. Please be advised that due to the nature of building a parade float, we are unable to return any lights or batteries after the parade.
Congratulations! You’ve survived the end of
another liturgical year! As we begin another church year this Sunday, I’m always amazed at how differently we celebrate the New Year compared to how the rest of the secular world celebrates ringing in the New Year. Welcoming another year in Time Square is often full of Goodwill, resolutions and great optimism. Out with the old and in with the new; old acquaintances being forgotten and the like. The New Year’s Eve celebration gives us a chance to look back on the past year’s regrets and say “good riddance to 2019” and welcome in with great optimism the endless possibilities of the year to come.
The liturgical year coming to an end is a little different though. Instead of forgetting the past, it emphasizes the importance of remembering the past. The Church is at her best when she enters into a routine, a cycle; and we as a people are most comfortable when we enter into a routine and experience the fullness of the Churches life through our rituals that are repeated over and over again.
The Season of Advent invites us, week after week, to enter into a cycle of life that recalls our past experiences of the divine. Far from washing away the previous year’s experiences, Advent is a radical and deep encounter. A time to keep watch. A time to stay awake and keep vigil for the Lords coming is at hand. Our readings at Mass this weekend proclaim our need to remain vigilant as it reminds us to “Awake from our sleep! For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” The brilliance of the liturgical year and its cyclical pattern calls us back continually to memory, to the consoling presence of that time when we all “first believed”.
In this weekend’s Gospel, Jesus comes to us “like a thief in the night.” His return will be a complete surprise, for no one but God truly knows the day or the hour of our Lord’s return. God intends to come, not just calling or texting us a message of his return saying that he is in the neighborhood and would like to drop by with a gift for us. There will be no time to set the table or get the house ready for his visit. So at the start of this advent season, we should stay awake and fully ready to answer the door when our Lord knocks.

Liturgical Living: Today begins the First week of
Advent! What Is an Advent Wreath? During Advent and Christmas, festively decorated evergreen wreaths hang in windows and on doors everywhere. In many homes and churches, it’s also common to see special wreaths lying on tables or ledges, adorned with four candles (usually three purple and one pink). This familiar symbol of the season is the Advent wreath.
Traditionally, the Advent wreath is a circle of evergreen branches. Both the evergreen branches and the circular shape symbolize the passing of time and eternal life. The shape of the wreath, with no beginning or end, reflects the complete and endless love that Jesus has for us. During the Advent season, we eagerly anticipate his coming and the promise of eternal life in heaven with him.
The Meaning of Advent Candles As a Christian tradition, the wreath holds the four Advent candles. The candles represent Jesus coming as the light in darkness. One candle is lit each Sunday until all four candles are lit, and sometimes a fifth candle is lit on Christmas. As Christmas draws nearer, each candle brings a little more light into the darkness.
Each of the candles represents an aspect of preparation during the season of Advent:
1) The Candle of Hope (Color: Purple) Purple is the primary color associated with Advent. Within the Catholic Church it symbolizes penance, preparation, and sacrifice. During the first week of Advent, we look forward to Jesus’ coming with hope.
2) The Candle of Peace (Color: Purple) During this second week of Advent, we reflect on our lives and work on becoming better-versions-of-ourselves in preparation for Jesus’ coming.
3) The Candle of Joy (Color: Pink or Rose) This third candle is pink or rose, symbolizing anticipation and rejoicing. During the third week of Advent, we are filled with joy for the near arrival of Jesus on Christmas day.
4) The Candle of Love (Color: Purple) During this final week of Advent we rejoice in the endless love that God has for us, which is made apparent in the birth of his Son:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3:16
