Mission this Week with Confessions! This week we are excited to host Fr. Jewel Aytona, a priest of the Fathers of Mercy religious order for our parish mission from Monday to Wednesday at 6:30 PM We will have confessions beginning at 5:30 PM and make them available after the talk as well. He is back by popular demand—well, sort of. His brother, Joseph, came here last year. He was so well received I asked him if he could either send himself or a colleague this year. He agreed and sent his brother—literally his blood brother, two years his junior. The Fathers of Mercy are a solid order (and the first one I looked into as I was discerning a call to the priesthood). For those who were here last year you know what to expect, and if you didn’t make it last year, you won’t want to miss this year. The Fathers of Mercy do not charge for the mission. We only pay him for his travel arrangements. He will take a free will offering each night so we kindly ask you to be generous. Furnace breaks—Parishioner responds! Those who have been frequenting the Adoration Chapel the last two weeks may have thought we were trying to add extra penance to their lives—until we put out word that our furnace broke. A parishioner immediately responded. At our overnight prayer service last week the parishioner handed me a check for the whole amount! I continue to marvel at this parish’s generosity. Thank you to that anonymous donor and for the generosity shown in this parish on countless occasions—well beyond monetary gifts, but gifts of yourselves. Truly inspiring to see first-hand as your pastor. Veterans Day Remembrance I would be remiss if I did not pay tribute to our Veterans whom we honor on Sunday, although the legal holiday falls on Monday. Here’s a great story from the Civil War. General Smith of the army of the South was returning to his command with a contingent of his men. While he

was gone, the password had been changed. Smith and his men knew that it had been changed, but they did not know what change had been made. They also knew that if they went forward without the new password, they would be fired and killed. The general asked for a volunteer, someone to sacrifice his life to save the rest. A soldier stepped out of the ranks, a Catholic young man. After explaining the certain danger the hero would have to face, General Smith gave the lad a piece of paper on which he had written: “Send me the password.” The soldier would be shot, searched, and the paper would be discovered. Bravely the young man set out and reached the outposts. “Who goes there?” shouted the guard. “A friend,” answered the soldier. “Give the countersign,” ordered the guard. But the hero advanced without answering. At once rifles were raised and aimed. Feeling that his last moment had come, the soldier quickly made the Sign of the Cross. To his surprise the rifles were lowered. The making of the Sign of the Cross saved that soldier, for the Sign of the Cross had been given to the army as the password of the day by the Catholic commander, General Beauregard.

Music update For those who did not hear my homily last weekend in

which I talked about bringing in more contemporary

hymns, I encourage you to go to our website and listen

to the homily. It will give you a deeper justification

than this limited space will allow. We will begin singing

these hymns and some of the Mass parts in Latin

(Sanctus and Angus Dei) beginning on the second Sunday

of Advent, December 8 and 9.

More than 75 parishioners joined Fr Kaim during the overnight

novena on All Souls’ Day to pray our deceased loved ones, a re-

turn of our fallen away Catholics and for healing in the Church

due to the clergy scandal.

The Youth Summit took place on Sunday, October 28 at Rock Valley College. Several students from Holy Family attended.

Once again, we had a very successful Trunk or Treat on Tuesday, October 30, despite the downpour of rain!!

“Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” Unknown (Take time to honor those who gave their all for our freedoms.) Honor your father - Doug Mainwaring, www.lifesitenews.com, writes, “A

beautifully produced commercial offered by Gillette portrays the bond between an elderly father and his son, offer-ing a sharp contrast to the loud forces promoting euthanasia. Gillette’s new razor was designed for assisted shaving. The very moving commercial shows a middle-aged son lovingly daily grooming his father. Son, Rex, explains, ‘it’s an honor to do that for my father because he did it for me when I was a kid. It’s the kind of thing that you do out of love.’” (watch - https://tinyurl.com/ybmw2bgt) “Free speech” not allowed on college campuses - Students for Life, www.lifesitenews.com, “Students for Life of America (SFLA) released a newly updated map of violations of pro-life student speech, noting the ‘epidemic of van-dalizations of peaceful, pro-life speech.’ Recent vandalizations included destroyed & stolen fliers, torn down pro-life posters, and stolen signs & flags. Pro-abortion advocates are so fearful of the pro-life message that they consistently attempt to hide the truth from women about the help that is there for them. These pro-life students are willing to do the hard work of defending women and their preborn children no matter the obstacles.” (https://tinyurl.com/ybweettq) Once furious about having a son with Down syndrome, today she can’t imagine life without him - Sarah Terzo, www.liveaction.org, writes, “The geneticist told her that her baby seemed normal and there was no need for an amniocentesis to rule out Down syndrome. [Imagine her shock] when on the day of her son’s birth, she discovered he had Down syndrome. Initially she was angry, but a baby is hard to hate. Two months after his birth, she wrote, ‘My son is nestled comfortably in my arms, watching me as I watch him. I can’t imagine not having him here with me. He will only feel comfort and love, never to understand the impact he has made on us. The geneticist saved his life.’” (https://tinyurl.com/yaanjmdq) November is National Adoption Month. Adoption is the loving option.

Deacon Information Day Catholic Men ages 35-55, have you ever thought about serving the Lord in His Church as a Permanent Deacon? Has anyone told you that you would make a great Deacon? Fr. Ken Wasilewski is holding a

Deacon Information Day for

Men and their wives who are inter-

ested in the formation process on November 17, 2018 or

December 1, 2018, 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM at the Diocesan

Come join THE LADIES AUXILIARY

The next meeting of Holy Family's Ladies Auxiliary is on Wednesday, November. 14 at 7 PM in the St. Joseph Room in the lower level of the church. If you do not belong or have never visited a meeting, we invite you to join us. We meet for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours and then have treats. Two different women of the Auxiliary sign up to bring treats for each meeting. We do activities to raise money to help our parish. We help the community and the Knights of Columbus; but we are not part of the Knights and you DO NOT have to be married to a member of the Knights to join our organization. We are a small group - between 30 and 35 members. This allows us the opportunity to get to know and enjoy each other, and we would love to have you join us!

Holy Family Seniors Lunch Group We will meet Wednesday, November 14 at 12:15 PM at Imperial Palace, 3415 E. State St. All are wel-come!! Please contact Gary at 815-541-6549 for your reservation!

Due to First Reconciliation on November 17, we will NOT have morning Confessions that day. Please join us at 3:00 PM for Confession. Please keep our sec-ond graders in prayers as they continue on this faith-ful journey to loving and respecting our Lord and His Commandments.

Holy Family Catholic School Working to make our every thought, word and action pleasing to God...

New Catholic “Virtues in Education” set to begin at Holy Family School

Moral virtues help us live within the moral parameters set forth by the Gospel. Prudence, temperance, justice and for-titude are known as the cardinal virtues. Other virtues in-clude patience, chastity, and obedience...there are many more! For example, prudence is the grace to form correct judgements and make good decisions. Justice assists us in dealing equitably with others. We will be starting a “Virtues in Education” program at Holy Family. A group of parents and teachers have convened to develop an educational program to instruct children in grades Pre-K through 8th on the Catholic virtues at their level. The purpose of the program is to introduce the virtues to the children, give an explanation of each virtue, and help the children understand how they can use these virtues in their daily lives at school and at home. Virtues will be broken down each week. Each Friday, the school newsletter will outline the “Virtue of the Week” for the following week so that parents can see not only what the kids are working on, but use this information as points for discussion at home. Believe it or not, there are so many virtues that we cannot make it through all of them in one year. Those that we do not instruct this year will be taught next school year. We appreciate your willingness to work with your children on this project, and hope that incorporating these virtues into your daily lives will bring you many blessings! The Catholic Identity Committee, Education Commission

Virtue of the Week:

Justice Justice helps us weigh what is due God and other

people and to act accordingly. Life will present us

with different choices. Justice helps us to choose

what is fair and kind for everyone. God wants us to

do what we know and feel is right. A person who

displays justice is patient with themselves and oth-

ers and looks for peaceful ways to solve conflict. As

we begin our study of virtues at Holy Family

School, we first focus on making good decisions in

class and at hone, keeping God the Father in mind.

Scripture: “Blessed are those who do what is right,

whose deeds are always just.” (Psalm 106:3)

Self-Control at Home: Find a peaceful way to solve

a conflict with a sibling or family member.

Self-Control at School: Raise your hand in class,

take turns on the playground, and share with oth-

ers.

Ladies Dinner Out at Tavern on Clark!

Giving to others As Holy Family has done in the past, we will be collecting items each week during Advent to give to various organi-zations.

Also, our student Iris Harradine will be working on collect-ing items for Rock House Kids who are in need of small items such as: matchbox cars, play doh, cards, lip balm, coloring books and crayons. So please watch for Iris’s box to come out the week of Thanksgiving!

“Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or needing clothes, or sick, or in prison, and did not help

you?” This is the question the “goats” on the Son of Man’s left asked Him in the 25th chapter of Matthew’s Gospel. We all remember the Lord’s response.

We have many children in our community who are unprepared to meet the bitter cold our Midwestern winters bring. They need coats!!!

The Knights of Columbus will be collecting clean coats after all Mass-es on November 17 & 18. The coats should be new or gently used, including smaller sizes for infants and toddlers.

ST PEREGRINE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP Join us on November 15th from 1:00-3:00 PM, in the

Hospitality Room. Our topic will be: Life's Blessings

We will be collecting children's winter gloves, hats, coats, sweaters, etc. to be donated to The St. Elizabeth Center. They may be new or slightly worn, but clean. The children are in great need of these basic and necessary items as we near the cold winter months.

I know everyone's schedule is busy this time of year, so if you have items to just drop off, we will gladly accept them before, during or after our meeting.

Everyone is welcome to join us. You need not be a cancer survivor to attend. If you, or someone in your family is dealing with cancer, I can promise you, these meetings will be beneficial for you.

Holidays can be difficult for people, especially those who have lost loved ones to cancer, or are dealing with cancer themselves. You do not have to be alone. Join our family of survivors!

Dinner Out with the Women’s Guild Join us on Thursday, November 15 at 5:30 PM at JMK Nippon, located at 2551 N. Perryville Rd. in Rockford. We have a great group of ladies and love to welcome newcomers. Call or e-mail Lorraine for a reservation, 815-397-2905, [email protected].

Morning Coffee with Women’s Guild We enjoy great coffee and conversation at Mary’s Market in the Edgebrook Shopping Center. Gath-ering date and time is Tuesday, November 27 after the 8:30 Mass (around 9:00 AM). Newcomers are always welcomed!

Advent by Candlelight November 30, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the Family Room of the Church. It is an evening by women for women. This is such a beautiful way to come together and kick off Advent 2018! Please email or call if you would like to attend this event. A reservation is required so we can have enough food and drink. Contact Barb at 815-398-4280 [email protected]
