CHRISTMAS BREAK - December 21st -January 3rd
Dear Parents. Welcome back after our Thanksgiving break, which I hope fortified you for the next three weeks. The next 15-days will be filled with wonderful activities and Christmas excitement. As you may know, yesterday was the 1st Sunday of Advent, which begins the Church's liturgical year. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from De-cember 17-24,we focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). The Advent Wreath reminds us of the meaning of the season. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the 3rd Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, a time of joy as the faithful celebrate the fact their preparation is now half over and Christmas is close at hand. Let us all rejoice. God Bless, Sister Dorothy Sayers, M.P.F.

Thank you so much for visiting our Scholastic Book Fair. Your gen-erous purchases are greatly appreciated. A special thank you to all
of the volunteers who signed up to help run the fair. The set up crew and pack up crew were angels. Mrs. Bahamonde, as usual, went
above and beyond. Another special thank you to Grace & Emma Neary’s dad for his generous donation of his book, on baseball great
Hank Aaron. Author Kevin Neary donated all of the profits from all of his books that were sold, back to the school. Now that’s a
home run! Thank you again & God bless, Gina Gibbs-Media Center BO

RAFFLE WINNERS
Once again, Holy Family will participate in the National History
Bee. This competition consists of several rounds, beginning with
the Intramural test taken at Holy Family and ending with the
National Championship on June 9-12 in Chicago, IL.
Our Intermural test is open to students in 5th—8th grades and will be administered on Wednesday, De-
cember 9, 2015. The top ten students will move on to the Online Regional Qualifying Exam (taken here
at school) in January. The top scorers from each region will advance to the Regional exam held from Feb-
ruary to April. Each regional champion will advance to the National Championship held on June 9th—
12th 2016, in Chicago.
Although the Intramural test is not being held until January, there are some
things you can do to prepare:
* Read about history. Whether it's books, magazines or newspapers, the
more history you read, the more you'll learn.
* Peruse the Internet Resources section of historybee.com. While the ques-
tions asked in the National History Bee don't necessarily come from these
websites, they are representative of the type of information that is covered.
* Take the sample Intramural Test or the practice Online Regional Qualifying Exams. Not only will you
learn a lot of cool facts about history, but you will also get great practice with the type of questions you'll
see in Stage 1 of the National History Bee.
*Read the official National History Bee Study Guide. This is intended as an outline of subjects that are
common in National History Bee questions. Use this as a starting point in your quest to expand your
knowledge of history.
* Follow the Bee on Twitter (@NatlHistoryBee) and Like them on Facebook. Periodically they’ll be post-
ing links to cool articles and websites with interesting history information.
If you are interested in participating in the National History Bee, please complete the bottom portion of
this page and return it to Dr. Ma no later than Friday, December 4th.
