MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

Birth of John the Baptist B-2018 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! Whenever we hear the news of a baby’s birth, many questions pop up; boy or girl...what does the baby weigh…what is the baby’s length…who does the child look like…what is the

child’s name? I’m sure proud and happy parents wonder also the kind of future that awaits this child and, of course, the answer is that it is nothing but the best and better than they had growing up. All questions are before Elizabeth and Zechariah who are joyful because of this miracle, especially at this time in their lives. When the question of the child’s name arises, Elizabeth firmly announces that the child’s name would be John, a fascinating and perfect name for this child meaning “God’s gracious gift”. We hear the family and friends of Elizabeth and Zechariah challenge this decision, reminding them they are breaking tradition. When Zechariah intervenes and acknowledges John as the name to be given, and with the return of his power of speech, the people marvel at this miracle and wonder what this child will be. People soon realized that John had turned out to be one of God’s servants, the herald, who prepared the way for Jesus’ coming. It is a glorious, but challenging, task. We see how John remained humble as he said he was “unfit to untie His sandals” and that Jesus “must increase and he decrease.” When Jesus appeared on the scene, we see that John did take a step back. He invited people to come back to God and be baptized as a sign of repentance and to prepare the way of the Lord. We learn that the beginning of John’s life was a time of rejoicing but how its ending would be marked by an act of sickening violence. John was beheaded in the underground dungeon of Herod; the price he paid for condemning Herod’s evil behavior. During his lonely time in prison, John wonders about the uncertainty of what his fate might be. John wonders if Jesus is truly the one they have been waiting for. He wonders if he was mistaken in his mission and whether he worked in vain. The reassuring message of Jesus must have warmed his heart in his final days. Again the question arises, what will this child be? The very question they asked when John was born. When we think about it, a similar question might be asked of us; what marvels does God have in store for us? Like John, each of us was known by God before we were born; we were known and loved in our mother’s womb. Shortly after our birth, another marvel awaited most of us. Through the sacrament of Baptism, we began a share in God’s own life; we became the sons and daughters of God with a destiny of eternal life and happiness. And now, like John, we are called to decrease so that Christ may increase in us and bear witness to Him in the way we live our lives. Like John, we have moments when we wonder if it is all worth it, if perhaps we are toiling in vain. Our celebration of John’s birthday can help us to draw strength from his heroic courage and faithfulness unto death and to be inspired, in our own small way, to continue his work, enabling the bright light of Christ to shine out more brilliantly in our world. Peace, Fr. Joe A special thank you to Emma and Michele Tarantino for their special devotion Saint Anthony. We had a great celebration of the Tredicina novena and concluding Mass and reception. Over 260 attended the Mass. We thank all who participated to make this devotion a great success. Special thanks to all who donated to the “Heart” which totaled $1,200.00 – the offerings made each day and placed at the statue for the Tredicina amounted $948.00 and the collection for the Italian Mass in honor of Saint Anthony amounted to $417.00. The total gift was $2,565.00. May good Saint Anthony intercede for you before the throne of God for your special intentions. May God Bless you for your love and devotion.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “…Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” – Acts 13:25 Stewardship is a lifestyle, it’s not a program or a process. It’s how we are called to live our lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live “God-centered” lives, not “self-centered” lives. Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name? For Sunday, June 17, 2018 The actual collection was $8,998.00 $1,603.00 of which came from WeShare. The 2nd Collection for Shared School Expenses was $1,751.00 Mass Attendance was 1,279. God Bless You for your generosity!

For Sunday, June 18, 2017

NUTLEY - Commissioner Steven Rogers and the Department of Public Affairs are honored to announce a date for the long overdue award ceremony for Nutley Resident Anne Rotonda. Ms. Rotonda was awarded the Department of Public

Affairs Women’s Advocacy Award in 2017 for her outstanding work with the Special Young Adults Organization, in addition to years of community support and outreach. She has dedicated her entire life to the well-being of countless special young adults who would otherwise have nowhere to turn. She not only provides them with somewhere to go, and daily activities, but she showers them in the love and support they deserve. She is completely and unconditionally loved by every young adult that comes though her doors, as well as by everyone that has had the undeniable privilege of meeting or working with her. All are cordially invited to attend the award ceremony which will take place at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 30, 2018 in the Nutley Public Affairs Building located at 149 Chestnut Street.
