ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK - 2021 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (or Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional

abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 21, 2021, to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, May 30, 2021. *Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year

During Lent ONLY, we will celebrate Morning Prayer at 6:00 AM IN THE CHAPEL until Wednesday, March 31st.

The 7:00 AM Mass will follow IN THE CHURCH until Wednesday, March 31st.

If there is snow, the 6:00 AM & 7:00 AM celebrations will be canceled as we cannot promise that the pathways will be cleared.

Friday evening Stations of the Cross will be celebrated in Church; 6:45 PM in English.

Again, if there is snow, use your judgment about attending evening services as the snow may not be cleared.

“Let the Church always be a place of mercy and hope, where everyone is welcomed, loved, and forgiven.” ...Pope Francis The Church can also be a place to heal. We are called to “be merciful like the Father.” So many are suffering from the effects of abortion. Where can they heal? Where can they feel safe and loved?

3rd Sunday of Lent “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the

shape of anything…” - Exodus 20:4

How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can

touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health. Pray for God’s help to prune our vices and to grow in virtue.

News on the Reproductive Freedom Act (S3030/A4848) As you recall, Gov. Murphy and certain legislators are trying to push through legislation that will expand abortion in NJ, force medical personnel to perform abortions against their conscientious objections as well as require tax payers to pay for abortions. The latest news is that the legislation is not moving but the NJ Catholic Conference (NJCC) is monitoring the situation and, should the bill begin to move through the legislative process, the NJCC will issue appropriate notifications. Please visit: https://njcatholic.org/reproductive-freedom-act for more information.
