FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

HOLY FAMILY CHURCH ST. JEANNE JUGAN PARISH ST. BERNARD CHURCH

Happy Mother’s Day Heavenly Father, from the beginning you have chosen to

entrust the human person to mothers in a special way.

We thank and praise you for the gift of mothers; for their

tenderness, care, and compassion, for their intuition and

encouragement, for commitment and sacrifice.

Bless all mothers this day.

Keep, strengthen, and refresh them in your loving care.

May they be blessed by our open-hearted love and gratitude.

Amen.

REFLECT

When earthly lives end, especially when the person is younger,

we tend to focus upon and consider what was lost. We think of

lost opportunities — things they won’t be able to see, babies

they won’t be able to cradle, and adventures that now must go

undiscovered. Our minds create this chasm between earth and

heaven that sees the losses of this life as permanent ones, never

possible to achieve again. This perception causes many folks to

remain stuck in their grief as they ponder all of the missed

opportunities and regrets.

This is not resurrection thinking. All of the love that we can give

and receive, the joy and elation that can be experienced, the

adventures that can be undertaken, and the possibilities to be

discovered are all part of a continuous journey. They are not

ends in and of themselves but are all part of the unfolding of a

relationship we have with God, who not only makes all of these

wonderful things possible now but sustains them and fulfills

them into eternity. The perception and experience of loss is

really an illusion, because in God’s eternal kingdom and in God’s

time, nothing is ever lost. Even the most intimate and tender of

moments we can conceive of sharing with another human being

are only part of a journey toward perfect intimate and tender

moments to be shared with God in our resurrected life. We

become like God and see God as He is in eternity. What greater

joy, love, and hope can ever be discovered as we walk down our

often dimly lit paths in this world.

This is an awesome wonder and magnificent news to behold.

Call to mind someone you have lost in death. How do you see

them now? How do you see yourself in heaven? Remind

yourself, again, that God is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Our

happiness is not going to be fully realized in this world, and there

is nothing we can find here that cannot be found one hundred

fold in eternity. It’s all about relationship, and not solely about

the relationships we have with each other, ourselves, and the

world in which we live. It’s about our relationship with God. If

we realize how special that one relationship really is, then there

is only one particular of heaven and life eternal that really

matters: namely, that we fall into love eternal and discover truth.

For when we finally close our eyes in death, then all will be well

as long as we are with God. There are no losses, only gains.

RESOURCES TO HELP BRING FAITH HOME AND THE FAMILY CLOSER

Compiled for you by The Catholic Telegraph

With kids out of school, Masses and religious education classes

cancelled, you may feel cut off or overwhelmed with how to

continue to teach and share the beauty and joy of the Catholic

faith within your home. This time at home is a wonderful

opportunity to pray and grow together as a family. Here are 4

fun resources to help you and your family keep the faith-learning

going at home!

1. Pray More Novenas (praymorenovenas.com): Want to pray

together as a family, but not sure how? Pray More Novenas

sends daily emails that include prayers for novenas around

saintly feast days. Pray the prayer together as a family, and

include your own intentions.

2. Catholic All Year (catholicallyear.com): This website is headed

up by a Catholic mom of many who has some children in school,

and homeschools others. She runs a blog that provides great

Catholic resources for parents (and practical support and

advice). She also has a shop where you can purchase digital

downloads of Catholic booklets by month ($5). Booklets contain

prayers, blessings and Bible readings relevant to that month’s

liturgical calendar and saints’ feast days.

3. Catholic Mom (catholicmom.com): Articles of support for

Catholic parents? Check. Podcast? Check. Catholic Movie

Reviews? Check. This site is extensive, comprehensive and

provides a wealth of resources for moms, dads, and children

alike. Their Sunday Gospel activities are a particular favorite!

Download Gospel readings, coloring pages, lesson plans, Mass

worksheets and puzzles - all for free!

4. Katie Warner (katiewarner.com): Katie’s website provides a

wealth of resources for parents and children alike - from free

e-books and bulletin inserts (or home printouts as current times

demand), to a supportive Facebook community and “cheat

sheets” to help make family prayer easier.

2020 ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal provides help to those in need! Together, we can and do make a profound difference in the lives of many individuals and families, in a way that exceeds anything we could hope to achieve on our own. Please consider supporting this important initiative. Every gift makes a difference. Organizations such as the Enfield Food Shelf, the Enfield Safe Harbor Warming Center, Little Sister of the Poor, and the Network Against Domestic Violence, right here in our own town received funding from the Appeal’s Vicariate Outreach Program which serves our local neighbors.

All funds contributed to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal are used exclusively for the purposes outlined in the Appeal literature, which can be found at https://archdioceseofhartford.org/appeal/.

No Appeal funds are ever used for legal fees or settlements.

PRAYER TO MAKE A “SPIRITUAL COMMUNION”

For our faithful parishioners, not being able to attend Mass or receive Communion has made this pandemic even more difficult. We pray at home and watch Mass on TV but we want more. Although we may not be able to physically receive Communion right now, making a spiritual communion is a way to receive Jesus.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the

Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive

You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be

separated from You.

Amen.

IMPORTANT DIRECTIVE FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD

In light of continued assessment of the spread of

the coronavirus in the state of Connecticut and

Governor Lamont’s Executive Order of April 10th

the extension of closures of non-essential businesses

Therefore, any Mass Intention requested will still

be offered, with the exception of weekends. Only

one Mass will be offered each weekend. If you

have a scheduled Mass Intention on a weekend and

it is not offered, the church where it was scheduled

will contact you to reschedule to a later date.

Please call the rectory with questions.

A schedule of televised Masses are available below:

Our parish will also live-stream Masses on our

website (sjjenfield.org) Monday through Saturday at

7:30 am and Sunday at 8:00 am. Please know that any and all decisions made by the

Archdiocese regarding closures and cancellations

are based on the current understating of the severity

of the situation surrounding the pandemic at any

given point and may be altered (modified, extended,

or revoked) when deemed necessary.

BEWARE OF SCAMS

Some parishes have noted an increase in scam

attempts directed toward their parishioners. In

these scams, a call, text, or email is sent appearing to

come from the priest and requesting that the

individual send money to a certain location/account

or purchase gift cards whose serial numbers are

then forwarded along to the “priest.” Often, the

phone number or email address used appears as if

it might be coming from the priest but is, in fact,

fake. Please know that our parish would NOT

request donations in this way and that any offerings

to the parish should be made only through the

parish website, online giving page, parish office,

mailed-in envelopes, or other official channels

utilized by our parish.
