FROM THE PASTORS DESK, Hello there my dear parishioners and friends!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

What an impactful weekend this week-end is. We start it in one year and fin-ish in a brand new one: 2017 and in the process we celebrate the Solemni-ty of Mary, the Mother of God this weekend. So, as well as wishing a Happy New Year, we joyfully celebrate Our Lady as we recall that she IS the Mother of God, in the form of Je-sus whose birth we just celebrated.

The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is a feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the as-pect of her motherhood of Jesus Christ, whom Chris-tians see as the Lord, Son of God. It is celebrated by the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church on 1 January, the Octave (8th) day of Christmastide, and in the Catholic Church is a Holy day of obligation.

Christians of Byzantine Rite and of all West Syr-

ian Rite, South Syrian Rites and East Syrian Rites cele-brate Mary as Mother of God on 26 December and the Coptic Church does so on 16 January. The Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church observe the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ on January 1.

The feast is a celebration of Mary’s motherhood

of Jesus. The English title “Mother of God” is a translation of the Lat-in title Dei Genetricis, which means “She Who Generated God”, as the corresponding Greek title Θεοτόκος (Theotokos) means “She Who Gave Birth to God”. This title was dogmatically adopted at the First Council of Ephesus (431) as a way to assert that Jesus is God, and that his mother can therefore be called Mother of God. The title that the 1 January feast celebrates is thus not only Marian, but also Christological.

Let us celebrate each day of 2017 in the same

way. Calling on the Intercession of Our Lady each of these new days, but also remembering that we have them because of Her Son, thus making them Christo-logical.

God bless you all good things in this New Year!

Fr Cliff

THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is pro-claimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the peo-ple of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invo-cation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to

us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and since eight is one step beyond seven, the num-

ber of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Chris-tians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the

Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbid-den to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pente-cost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries un-til 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God.

Sunday Collections - DECEMBER 18th “ Our giving to the Church is a tangible way to say

thank you to God.” Please remember that our parish-es continue all year long,

draws heavily from Savings to meet its operational expenses. Please, I ask you, be generous and help us

maintain the level of doing that we are presently at! Thank you so much for whatever you can give.
