Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its
Noel: Christmas Eve 1913
A frosty Christmas Eve
when the stars were shining
Fared I forth alone
where westward fall the hill,
And from many a village
in the water’d valley
Distant music reach’d me
peals of bells aringing
The constellated sounds
ran sprinkling on earth’s floor
As the dark vault above
with stars was spangled o’er.
Then sped my thoughts to keep
that first Christmas of all
When the shepherds watching
by their folds ere the dawn
Heard music in the fields
and marveling could not tell
Whether it were angels
or the bright stars singing.

Pastor’s Post-It
Today is Holy Family Sunday. It always falls on the Sunday after Christmas. The Scriptures today teach us that right after the glorious birth of Jesus and the visit from the exotic magi, Joseph had to pack up the family and make a sudden move to Egypt to escape the murderous wrath and envy of King Herod. The patrons of our parish, the Holy Innocents, are a poignant reminder of the consequences of Herod’s rage—the collateral damage of his determination to prevent the rise of a rival king in Israel. Joseph and his teenage wife were forced to flee to a foreign country to protect their infant son from annihilation — to save the Savior for the whole human race, as it were. The Holy Family were history’s most famous “illegal aliens.” Given the caravans of migrants along our Mexican border, the Church invites us to draw the parallel to the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. Joseph and Mary fled their native land for the same reason so many Central Americans leave their countries. Their children are subject to death threats and conscription into gangs and drug and sex traffickers, just as the baby Jesus was under Herod’s death sentence. The Church and its leaders stand with the migrants. We wish them safety and a chance at a new life, not unlike our own families who came here inspired by Lady Liberty’s lamp. Jesus, Mary, Joseph, pray for them!

Today, the Feast of the Holy Family, we look at Jesus, Mary and Joseph as the model of all Christian families. Let us pray….
Loving God, during this holy season of Christmas,
We ask for your blessing on all families.
Let Mary’s openness to your wondrous ways be an inspiration to place all trust in you.
Let Joseph’s courage provide hope during times of
anxiety and uncertainty.
Let Jesus’ life ignite all families with a spirit of light and love.
May the grace the encircled the Holy Family widen to
embrace all families.
For this we pray..Amen

HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH December 30, 2018
First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 This passage from Sirach details the duties children owe to father and mother. Their life-long devotion will not be forgotten and “will take lasting root.” Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul urges Christians particularly in the setting of the family, to “clothe” themselves with kindness, patience, humility, and mercy; to forgive; and, above all, to love! Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 An angel of the Lord, appearing in a dream to Joseph, urges him to flee with Jesus and Mary to Egypt to escape the murderous schemes of Herod. Later, in another dream, an angel tells Joseph to go with Jesus and Mary to a town called Nazareth in the region of Galilee, thus fulfilling the Scriptures: “He shall be called a Nazarean.”
“‘Get up, take the child and his mother and flee into Egypt. Stay there until I tell you otherwise.’ Joseph got up and took the child and his mother and left that night for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Out of Egypt I have called my son.’ Joseph went to the region of Galilee. There he settled in a town called Nazareth.”
