Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

RESISTING HAPPINESS is the theme of our current Small Groups 6-week series. We are using Matthew Kelly’s book of the

same name to guide us and encourage us on our spiritual journeys. In this book Kelly shares his own spiritual journey

and how “resistance” often stepped in to derail his best intentions. It is not always easy to change habits and to make

your spiritual life a priority, but it definitely leads to long-term happiness. Here are some of the habits from Sessions 4-5

that can help us grow spiritually:

Reading the bible gives us insight into the mind of God and helps guide our decision-making. Other spiritual

reading can also enrich us and help us to keep God at the center of our lives.

It’s very easy to get caught up in ourselves. When we get outside of ourselves, serve others, and bring them

joy, we grow in gratitude and change our focus.

Attending a weekday Mass, which takes about 25 minutes, can help you experience and appreciate the Mass

in new and grace-filled ways. Try it!

Sunday Mass is an opportunity to actively listen to God. Matthew Kelly suggests greeting God when you

arrive at Mass, then praying: “God, show me one way in this Mass I can become a better-version-of-myself

this week. He even suggests bringing a little notebook to Mass and jotting down whatever God reveals to

you.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The 2nd collection this weekend is for the Church in

Latin America - El Salvador. This is the only appeal

made by the Diocesan

Mission Office for the

Cleveland Latin Amer-

ican Mission in El Sal-

vador. It is the main

support for two

priests who work in

the parishes served

by our Missionaries.

This appeal also

makes a contribution

to the Collection for

the Church in Latin

America that is managed by the US

Conference of Catholic Bishops. Your

gifts help share the faith by providing

lay leadership training, catechesis,

priestly and religious formation, as

well as other programs. Please

prayerfully consider supporting this

collection.

The 2016 contribution letters were mailed on

January 28th. If you have not received yours, please

contact Paula Phillips at [email protected]

or call the church office.

If you have not received your envelope packet or if you

are contributing on-line or by electronic donation and

you no longer want envelopes mailed to you please

contact Paula at the church office or at

[email protected].

Protecting God’s Children

The diocese has mandated anyone who is in ministry

with children in any capacity is obligated to renew their

VIRTUS certification and update their fingerprints. This

would be for anyone who hasn’t had their fingerprints

submitted in the last five years or longer.

Fingerprints can be completed at Holy Martyrs by

appointment. Please contact

Paula Phillips at

[email protected]

or call the church office.

The 2017 Catholic Charities

Annual Appeal begins in each

parish this weekend! Please

refer to the insert in this

week’s bulletin which includes an overview of the

importance of Catholic Charities in our communities.

This year’s appeal theme is You Did it for Me. In

Matthew’s gospel, Jesus states, “Amen, I say to you,

whatever you did for the least among us, you did it

for me.” With your help, we are able to feed the hun-

gry, take care of the sick, and welcome the stranger,

just as Jesus has asked us to do. How will we respond

as a community of faith?

As in the past, an in-pew commitment process will

take place next weekend, February 11-12. All who

have not received the mailing from Bishop Thomas,

or have not had a chance to respond to it, will be

asked to consider making a generous pledge to sup-

port the ministries and services provided by Catholic

Charities. If you have received the mailing, please

respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew envelope

to indicate that you have responded by mail.

We invite you to view the stories of inspiration and

more information at

www.catholiccommunity.org/2017Appeal.

CONFIRMATION

We Are Sealed with the Spirit

Our Confirmation candidates are in their fourth month of

preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation in October.

Have you considered since you were confirmed that Baptism

and Confirmation, join us to Christ, and we have been anointed

and filled with the Holy Spirit? Confirmation completes Baptism

and strengthens us to make Christ’s mission our own.

It increases in us the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are so

necessary to living a truly successful life on earth.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit keep our eyes focused

on God. They guide us in remaining faithful to our

baptismal promises.

Trinity is both Beginning and End

Love is the very meaning of Creation. Many of the Fathers and Mothers of the Church, along with many of the saints

and mystics throughout history, said that God created because, frankly, God needed something to love and something

that could love God freely in return. I imagine if you have children you’ve experienced this. When you welcomed your child

into this world, your fondest desire, perhaps at an unconscious level, was just to love this little one in every way possible.

Hidden behind that is the deep desire that “someday my child will love me back in the same way that I have loved him or

her.” There’s nothing wrong with that. Of course, the very way you love your children becomes their empowerment to love

you back.

~Richard Rohr :Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi

First Eucharist

This week the second graders of the parish who

are preparing for Eucharist reflected on

what Jesus celebrated at the Last Supper. The

Eucharistic prayer is the Church’s great prayer of

thanksgiving. At the Eucharist through the

power of the Holy Spirit

we join with the living

Christ to give praise and

glory to the Father. Do we

as a parish gather to

remember and celebrate

Jesus each Sunday?

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This Sunday we celebrate World Day For Consecrated Life. We recognize and give thanks to God and the

Church through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The consecrated life is one that women and

men live out their baptismal commitment as followers of Jesus. Please pray for all those who have made

commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day.

"Revisiting the 'Church in the City' Initiative with the Mayors of Three Northeast Ohio Cities". Mayors from three

Northeast Ohio cities discuss the impact of regional sprawl and its continuing moral, social, economic, and environmental

challenges. These regional political leaders have the experience, perspective, and commitment to respond in more

collaborative and creative ways to the challenges of Northeast Ohio's changing regional foot print. Mayor Susan Infeld,

University Heights, Mayor Bradley Sellers, Warrensville Heights, Mayor Georgine Welo, South Euclid, moderated by Mr. Len

Calabrese, former director of the Commission on Catholic Community Action. This event is free and open to the public;

cosponsored by The Institute of Catholic Studies, The Carroll News and Teaching Cleveland Digital and will take place on

Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the D.J. Lombardo Student Center/LSC Conference Room at John Carroll

University.
