21st Sunday of

Ordinary Time (B) August 22, 2021

Reading I: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17,18b Responsorial Psalm: 34:2-3,16-17,18-19,20-21 Reading II: Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32 Gospel: John 6:60-69

Theme: “Jesus then said to the Twelve, ‘Do you also want to

leave?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life’” (Gospel).

Which of the teachings of the Lord do you think is hard to take? I find leaving everything behind especially family particularly difficult. Jesus’ words were shocking and listeners were left with a choice to stay or leave. Indeed, it was counter culture and simply cannibalistic for Jesus to claim himself as the true bread from heaven and one should eat His flesh and blood in order to have eternal life.

Do you want also to leave? What are our options, outside of God is death and damnation? What do we need to do? “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?’ Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent’” (John 6:28-29). For our own good, trust and faith in the Lord opens our heart to accept his words and teachings. It is one thing to understand or not understand what he is teaching, and it is another to trust and believe his person and being. The latter is the key to accept and receive all that he is teaching us. Usually, there are two Gods in our life; the true God who created us, and the second god we created. God is ineffable, so it is lifelong process to grow in understanding the Lord and follow his teachings.

In the journey of life, it is a common situation where we need to make decisions. God respects our freedom, even freedom to disobey and go against Him. Faith takes a leap whenever we embrace Him in faith and trust. To read the future and having a 20/20 twenty vision or hindsight is faith in God. In between and what we daily encounter is the moral, ethical and spiritual decision. Robert Frost tells us, "two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."

To whom shall we go? Jesus Christ, the Son of God is our bread of life and we are blessed to partake in His Body and Blood in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Let us pray: God our Father, strengthen our faith in you through your Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever, Amen.

XXI Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario (B) 22 de agosto de 2021

Lectura I: Josué 24: 1-2a, 15-17,18b Salmo responsorial: 34: 2-3,16-17,18-19,20-21 Lectura II: Efesios 5: 21-32 o 5: 2a, 25-32 Evangelio: Juan 6: 60-69 Tema: “Entonces Jesús dijo a los Doce: '¿También ustedes quieren irse? ¿A quién iremos?

Pastoral Reflection By Martha Rodriguez, Vice Chairperson of Pastoral Council

John 6:60- 6:69 "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life." Take a moment and put yourself in the disciples' shoes. How would you respond if Jesus were saying all of this to you? Would you be overwhelmed, excited, frightened, or elated? John tells us: Many of Jesus' disciples turned their backs on Him and went back to their homes." However, Simon, Peter approached Jesus and said " Lord there is no one else whom we can go to. You alone have the words of eternal life." Peter Then affirmed his belief that Jesus truly was God's Holy Son! Here was Peter boldly professing his belief in Jesus as the Christ. Peter's strong faith and deep belief in Jesus must have bolstered Jesus' spirit. Jesus was divine, yet he also was human and thus he experienced the same emotions we experience. How deep is your conviction that Jesus is the Lord? I invite you to take a few moments and reflect on that question, then go to Jesus. If you truly believe in Jesus, profess your conviction and commitment to Him. If your are uncertain, take your uncertainty and doubts to Jesus. He will hold your hand and lead you closer to Him. Yet these are the times when we need to approach Him and talk with Him. We may question Him or perhaps simply sit in his presence and allow Him to wrap us in love and light. We are the ones who leave Him. Jesus will never, ever leave us!

Follow the instructions of the ushers as you enter and leave the Church. 6. After receiving Communion, we need everyone to maintain in their seats until the ushers direct your row towards the exits. We ask that you please be patient, as we are doing our best to maintain exiting in an orderly manner. 7. Finally, we ask that you be very patient with us, especially our volunteers who did not establish these procedures, but are only following them. They are giving of their time to help us celebrate Mass, without volunteers this Mass would not happen. Thank you.
