Catholic Education Week Theme : Living as Joyful Disciples

May 5th to May 10th

The 2019 theme was inspired by three sources: Renewing the Promise, The Pastoral Letter on Catholic

Education from the Bishops of Ontario; Gaudete et exsultate, the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on the

Call to Holiness; and Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment, the October 2018 Synod of Bishops.

Mindful of the Synod on Youth, the theme and sub-themes are very much directed to the young people in our

schools, especially in their growth in holiness and their formation as disciples of Christ through the discernment

of their vocational pathways. In the section of Renewing the Promise entitled, “A Community that Forms Joyful

Disciples,” we read, “Our Catholic schools help to form joyful disciples as hearts and minds are opened to the

transforming love of God and to the flame of faith in action. On a daily basis, Catholic schools demonstrate the

joy of believing and witness the Good News to the communities that they serve.”

There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:

Day 1: Rooted in Prayer

Day 2: Living in Community

Day 3: Doing Justice & Creating Hope

Day 4: Journeying Together in Faith

Day 5: Sharing the Good News

Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with a re-

source kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources, as well as our own de-

veloped activities, we have prepared a series of activities that Holy Name uses during Catholic Education

Week, which will highlight how the students and staff at our school are Living as Joyful Disciples.

In keeping with sustainability and King City’s agricultural roots, we created a collaborative felted wool

tree to represent Holy Name’s motto “Ever Growing in Thee” for our 50th Anniversary celebration.

Every student and staff chose a strand of yarn and created an intention and personal blessing from their

hearts for the school and it’s community; past, present and future. The strands were interwoven into

the felted creations and were put together to create a tree, grounded strong in its roots and

reaching up toward the light of our faith, wisdom, love and compassion-Ever Growing in Thee.

Thanks to Ms. Tiz from Stretching Canvas/Messy Hands for her leadership, creativity and assistance

with this school wide project and its huge success. A special thank you to Elizabeth Crowe, the Trustee

of Area 1, for funding this project. It will be displayed in our Holy Name school foyer on

Saturday, May 25, 2019 for all to admire and enjoy for years to come!

MAY—“Taste of the Rainbow”… Can you eat a rainbow of colours?

In our April newsletter we announced that Holy Name’s Healthy Snack program has once again

consumption, which are the foundation of healthy eating habits. Holy Name is participating in a

‘Taste the Rainbow’ incentive. Each week, we have assigned colour and all staff and students will be asked to fill their lunches with items that fall into this category:

Week One: May 6th – 10th Orange (Fruits and Vegetables)

Week Two: May 13th – 17th Green (Fruits and Vegetables)

Brain Science in the Schools: Take 2

Holy Name welcomes Professor Maggie Toplak who is a psychology

professor at York University. Her expertise is the development of judgment

and decision-making. Mrs. Toplak has presented “Brain Science” to our

grade 3’s in the past and is returning with “Brain Science in the Schools:

Take 2”. This presentation focusing on cognitive development and brain

changes in early adolescence, particularly grades 7-8.

Our intermediate students are in a very important phase of development where more autonomy and

independence is sought. Their ability to make their own decisions is increasingly critical. In her research,

Mrs. Toplak has discovered that the period of adolescence provides unique challenges where there seems

to be parallel development between seeking risky choices, but also the development of cognitive regulation.

In addition to these cognitive and biological changes, the impact of peers is very high, the curiosity

associated with substances (including cannabis) very salient and the pervasive lure of social media and

other technology.

Our intermediate students will participating in “Brain Science in Schools: Take 2”on Wednesday, May

22. The grade 7 presentation will take place from 9:25-10:25 am and the grade 8 will follow from

10:50-11:55 am in our school library. Mrs. Toplak will be illustrating the challenges that occur in the

brain development during adolescence. Risks and opportunities at this phase of development will be

discussed, including the impact of substances, such as cannabis, on overall brain development. We are

looking forward to welcoming Mrs. Toplak and participating in this informative presentation.
