TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As a result of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the Church has defined a new pastoral plan for your care when-ever you struggle with illness. There are rites for children, a communal rite for celebration in the parish, forms of care for the sick at each stage and transition, and for the desperately ill. There is a much broader interpretation of who may be anointed, including not only the visibly ill, but those battling addiction, or the elderly coping with the frustrating aches and pains of aging. Children under seven are normally not anointed, since the oil is associated with reconciliation. (For the same reason, they do not receive ashes on Ash Wednesday.) However, children close to that age who have a serious illness often gain a deep level of spiritual insight and maturity, and may benefit from catechesis for the Eucharist. Once admitted to confirmation and/or Eucha-rist, a sick child should be anointed. It is a great strength of our present rite that a section is included with prayers tailored to the experience and understanding of a child. Considering our recent history of being fairly sparing with this sacrament, the generosi-ty of celebration today is helping us to retrieve an essential part of our tradition of reverence for the sick. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. FAMILY INFLUENCE Disorder in the society is the result of disorder in the family. —St. Angela Merici NOT WITHOUT LOVE The soul cannot live without love. —St. Francis de Sales IT TAKES MORE Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile. —Billy Sunday

DIVINE MERCY IN MY SOUL (continued) from the diary of Saint Maria Faustina:

Proclaim to the whole world My unfathomable mercy. (Diary, 1142) Proclaim that mercy is the greatest attribute of God. All the works of

My hand are crowned with mercy (Diary, 301). Do whatever is within you your power to spread devotion to My mercy. I will make up for what you lack. Tell aching mankind to snug-gle close to My merciful Heart, and I will fill it with peace (Diary 1074). Tell My priest that hardened sinners will repent on hearing their words when they speak about My unfathoma-ble mercy, about the compassion I have for them in My Heart. To priests who proclaim and extol My mercy, I will give wondrous power; I will anoint their words and touch the hearts of those to whom they will speak (Diary, 1521).Jesus said, “Tell souls that spread the honor of my Mercy I will shield them through their entire life and at the hour of their death I will not be a Judge for them, but the Merciful Sav-ior.” (Diary, 1075)--- “Write down these words, my aughter, Speak to the world about My Mercy; let all mankind recog-nize My unfathomable Mercy. It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice. While there is still time let them have recourse to the fount of My Mercy; let them profit from the blood and water which gushed forth for them." (Diary, 848) “The graces of My Mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, that is TRUST. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive." (Diary, 1578) “You (we) are to be a living reflection through LOVE and MERCY, be al-ways merciful towards other people especially toward sin-ners.” (Diary, 1446) “Paint a picture according to the vision you see and with the signature, JESUS I TRUST IN YOU. (Diary, 47)

CHANGE OUR LIVES In today’s first reading, Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through Nineveh, frightening the citizens out of their wits. It works! They repent before Jonah makes his way through a third of

the city, and God sees “by their actions” how they have turned from evil. Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that “the world in its present form is passing away.” He calls for a change of heart. He stops short of telling them to set aside their everyday lives, but still he urges them—rather mysterious-ly—to live as though they aren’t doing the things they’re do-ing. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” The apostles-to-be abandon their nets and follow him. Thus in all the readings we hear an invitation to a radical and immediate change in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
