THEME: God Reveals Himself to His Friends as Love

PAGE: 505 in New Sunday Missal. YEAR: B

A WORD FROM YOUR PARISH PRIEST (Continued)

The even deeper wonder of our Catholic faith is that we are be-

ing invited to realise more and more deeply that we are personally

beloved by God, and in the Person of Jesus. The Gospel of St.

John, in particular, makes this truth a basic theme of all his writ-

ings. In today's Gospel reading, for example, we are told that as

the Father loves Jesus , so too Jesus loves us. We are invited to

remain in His love so that our human joy may be complete. Jesus

then goes on to make the remarkable statement that we are His

Friends and that He has chosen us to bear the fruits of His love

in our daily lives.

A growing awareness of this truth would bring about a remarka-

ble transformation in our own personal lives and in the life of the

parish as a whole. Many of us fall into the trap of allowing our re-

lationship with God to be dominated by fear and guilt, which is

such an impoverished way of understanding the kind of relation-

ship Jesus desires with us. This is something that St. Alphonsus,

the founder of the Redemptorists often spoke of too. He said

that a conversion to God which is made out of fear of guilt would

not last. A living and lasting relationship with God is only possible

when we come to realise how deeply we are all beloved.

Let us pray that each of us within the parish of Holy Redeemer

will allow ourselves to be spiritually and humanly transformed by

the astonishing gift that we are being offered each day: to call

ourselves beloved, to feel ourselves beloved on the earth.

Fr Gerard, CSsR

A WORD FROM YOUR PARISH PRIEST

One of my favourite authors is an American called Raymond

Carver, who died at the tragically early age of 50, in 1988. He is

most famous for his collections of short stories and his books of

poetry. Just a few hours before his death from cancer he asked

his wife to provide him with a pencil and paper, and he then wrote

his very last poem which is called "Late Fragment". I find his

words both inspiring and moving.

And did you get what

You wanted from this life, even so?

I did.

And what did you want?

To call myself beloved, to feel myself

Beloved on the earth.

In these very simple words the poet expresses what I believe is

a universal human truth, that more important to our well being

than material success in worldly terms, is the desire to know that

we are beloved during our life on earth. Of course, many of us

are very blessed in coming to know how much we are loved and

treasured through married and family life, and through the gift

of friendship.

Planned Giving Renewal

We are approaching the end of our financial year and need to refresh our planned giving or

Sunday collecon contribuons so that we can ensure the parish can meet its commitments.

Our running costs of the Parish are around R1.5m and we can be proud of the Faith and Wor-

ship acvies, support groups and Ministries that help our Parish remain so vibrant. The gener-

ous contribuon of treasure by many parishioners ensures that this can connue.

For every R1 contributed we spend the following:

25c to the Archdiocese

7c for electricity & water

8c for liturgical expenses

26c for insurance, security, prinng etc

17c for staff salaries

17c for priests living costs

Our average Planned giving amount by EFT is R370/month from 158 contributors, average

envelope share is R185/month from 166 parishioners and the balance of our income approxi-

mately 27% is from the general Sunday collecons. The range of monthly contribuons is from

R25 to R2300 per family.

In June we will be running our renewal campaign for planned giving and hope to encourage

more parishioners joining planned giving and everyone to refresh their monthly contribuon

as we strive to increase commi7ed income to fully meet our running costs. A R20/month (R5/

week) increase by all will go a long way to balancing our books and allowing us to use fundrais-

ing efforts to improve our facilies and build a reserve for repainng the outside of the Church

and Parish Centre.

Prayers as a Parish Community - Join our ‘Virtual Prayer Circle’.

Join in our communal ‘virtual’ prayer group (no forms just take part in your own me and

great way to contribute your me to support others in need.

This weeks' inten?on: To pray that those who suffer in the name of Chris?anity are given

permeate the hearts and minds of all and help bring an end to the needless suffering and

horrors commiCed by some against innocent others.

Working together by sharing me and talent to build our Parish and create opportunies for

worship for all as a vibrant and welcoming expression of our Catholic Faith.

It’s your Parish, join in, be part of the ac?on.
