Remember all of our deceased loved ones in your prayers
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
A Message on the Feast of Pentecost
As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, I recall portions of
Jesus’ high priestly prayer for his disciples. In that most
significant and far-reaching prayer, among other intentions,
Jesus prayed: “I pray not only for them, but also for those who
will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be
one, as you Father are in me and I in you, that also may be in
us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” (John 17.19-
21) Jesus prayed for the unity and oneness of his followers; a
unity that will be a sign to others and a tool for evangelization.
The Holy Spirit is the agent of our unity in faith and in the
proclamation of God’s word. On the day of Pentecost, that
agency was revealed and manifested as people from various
parts of the world heard the good news proclaimed in their
own native languages. One gift of the Spirit, among so many
others, was on full and attractive display as the apostles
spoke in tongues. It was an amazing experience for those
present resulting in a large number of conversions.
The Spirit was indeed at work. In the spirit of Pentecost,
today we come together as one family from our tri-parish area
here on the Northside of Jacksonville to celebrate our
oneness in the faith handed down from the apostles. Of
course, this is not the first time that parishioners of our three
parishes are coming together on a Sunday for one sacrifice of
the Mass on a given weekend. But this time it is different. It is
different because the intention is to make this an annual event
that will be rotated between the three parishes.
The inspiration for this move came from feedback I received
sometime last year. The hope is that, through encounters and
celebrations like this one, parishioners of our three parishes
become more familiar with one another through fellowship;
continue to appreciate our unity in faith and worship, and
break bread together as one family of believers.
As the Acts of the Apostles reminds us, the early Christians,
“…devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to
the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the
prayers.”(Acts 2.42) May our celebration today and
everyday bring about continued growth in faith and charity
towards all.
Come Holy Spirit, Come!!!
Happy Feast of Pentecost everyone!!!

Go Now and Do
A dove is often the first image we learn of the
Holy Spirit. The gentle beating wings of God’s
love and power tapping at our heart. Or perhaps
you think of fire, a consuming power, burning to
share His message of love. Still others may call up
Joel’s words “I will pour out my spirit” and see
the cool refreshing living water welling up in
their hearts. Why do we need all these different
pictures for one simple truth? Because the Spirit
is as diverse as we need Him to be. God’s Spirit
must reach us individually where we are and
touch the sleeping potential in our hearts to life.
Can such divine inspiration come in just one
standard size? Some of us need a lulling voice,
others can hear only a trumpet blare. The gentle
touch to shepherd one, the stricter rod to guide
others. Because God loves each of His children
equally He has given us a Spirit that can be what
we need, when we need it. Just as on the first
Pentecost, the Spirit brought diverse tongues to
carry God’s message of love and salvation to
every heart, today He speaks to us in our own
private language whispering the same words:
“God loves you. He has a purpose for you.
Go now and do.”
“People who give the best are those who give of themselves – your time,
talents, words, knowledge.” ― Omoakhuana Anthonia
