Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Take and Eat, Take and Drink!!!
These words from the lips of Jesus are some of the most important
and very personal ones there are in the scriptures. In them, the
Savior invites his disciples to eat his body and drink his blood in the
Holy Eucharist. Today in a special way we are enjoined to reflect
again on the central and unique place of this sacrament in our
spiritual and community lives as Catholics.
Like the celebration of the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity last
weekend, not surprisingly there are volumes that have been written
about the Holy Eucharist. For this space, we again turn to a few
paragraphs from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
“The Council of Trent summarizes the Catholic faith by declaring:
‘Because Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly his body that he
was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the
conviction of the Church of God, and this holy Council now declares
again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes
place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the
substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole
substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change
the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called
transubstantiation.’ (CCC, 1376)
“The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life.’ ‘The
other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works
of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented
toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual
good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.’ (CCC, 1324)
‘The miracles of the multiplication of the loaves, when the Lord says
the blessing, breaks and distributes the loaves through his disciples
to feed the multitude, prefigure the superabundance of this unique
bread of his Eucharist. The sign of water turned into wine at Cana
already announces the Hour of Jesus’ glorification. It makes manifest
the fulfillment of the wedding feast in the Father’s kingdom, where
the faithful will drink the new wine that has become the Blood of
Christ.(CCC, 1335)
“The inexhaustible richness of this sacrament is expressed in the
different names we give it. Each name evokes certain aspects of it. It
is called: Eucharist, because it is an action of thanksgiving to God.
The Greek words eucharistein and eulogein recall the Jewish
blessings that proclaim – especially during a meal – God’s works:
creation, redemption, and sanctification.”(CCC, 1328) Other names
include ‘the Lord’s supper’, ‘the breaking of bread’, etc (CCC, 1329)
May this Eucharistic food continue to be our spiritual nourishment
and preparation for eternal life. Amen.
Have a blessed week everyone!

When we receive communion and
hear the words, "The Body of Christ," we
receive, we accept Jesus’ true blood and
flesh. But what about His other body?
Have we accepted the body of Christ, the
parish community around us - these
people with their weaknesses, their sins,
their differences? Will we accept this
body and heal it, feed it, care for it and
cherish it? When you accept Him, can
you accept this body of Christ too?
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things
you didn’t do than by the things you did do. ~Mark Twain

The Council of Trent (1551) provides the depth of understanding we need to fully appreciate the Eucharist: “In the most blessed
sacrament of the Eucharist, the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore, the
whole Christ is truly, really and substantially contained.” This presence is called real because it is the presence is the fullest. It does
not negate the presence of Christ in the Word, the celebrant, or the assembly. (CCC# 1374)
