Pentecost is the 7th Sunday after Easter ending Eastertide. It comes from the Greek word

pentekostos, which means “fifty.” Fifty days after Easter Sunday, the apostles received the gift of the

Holy Spirit, the same Holy Spirit that led Jesus throughout His life. It is the Spirit that brings the Church

into existence, essentially making Pentecost the birthday of the Church. As Pope Francis says,” It is the Church which brings Christ to me, and me to Christ!”

On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit empowered the Apostles to speak in many different languages to reach all

people, crossing the boundaries of language, race & culture uniting them into a community of believers.

This was the first time God’s word was spoken directly to each individual and not just to a prophet who then shared it with everyone. The Church would now be a

place where every single person mattered. Pentecost challenges us to examine our own attitudes of division & to reject & repent of any prejudices that lie within us, & to open our hearts to all people, even

those who do not share our language & culture. Peace be with you.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE, CENTRAL VALLEY

When a child is hospitalized, the love & support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine.

Ronald McDonald House at Valley Children’s Hospital was built with the simple idea that nothing else

should ma er when a family is focused on the health of their child-not where they can afford to stay,

where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. There are 18 guest rooms that are used each & every night of the year

at 100% capacity. Through the generous dona ons of Holy Spirit parishioners, your Parish Outreach

Commi ee provides monthly support to help cover the costs for these overnight stays & ease the emo onal & financial burden on the families. Please con nue to pray for those in need &

thank you for your con nued generosity.

Youth Ministry Needs YOU!!!

As we come to the end of our formation year, we find ourselves once again in need of Core Member volunteers for this fall’s session. We will need someone to facilitate EDGE (our 7th and 8th grade group), or we may be forced to shut it down again. We also need 3 new Core members for Edge, as well as several new Core members for Life Teen (high school teens). Please pray about this, and if you think God may be calling you to volunteer in youth ministry, please contact Martha Perry or Francie Manzanares in the Youth Ministry office at 434-7708. Thank you!

We are beginning the P e e r M i n i s t r y application process for the 2017-2018 school year. Applications are available in the Youth

Ministry office, or may be emailed to you by r e q u e s t i n g a n a p p l i c a t i o n f r o m [email protected] Even if you were a Peer Minister 2016-2017, you will need to reapply. Thank you! “Pray as if everything depends on God. Work as though everything depends on you.” -St. Augustine

VOCATIONS WITH POPE FRANCIS "A boy — a bishop once told me — a young person, a young professional said to him: “I would like to become a priest, but only for 10 years”. The temporary is like this. We are afraid of what is permanent. And to choose a vocation, any vocation, also those vocational “states”: marriage, consecrated life, the priesthood, we must choose with a permanent outlook for life. And this is contrary to the culture of the temporary. It is a part of the culture which we are living today, and we must live it and overcome it." Registration is NOW OPEN for the 2017-2018 session of formation for high school teens in grades 9-12. Forms may be downloaded from our parish website, picked up in the Youth Ministry office, or emailed to you by contacting [email protected] Our mandatory Parent Meeting is on Sunday, August 20, immediately following the 12 pm Life Teen Mass. Formation will begin on Sunday, August 27 from 1-330 pm in Logan Hall. Please call Martha or Francie in the Youth Ministry office at 434-7708 if you have any questions.
