    *The Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with

    you all.

And also with you. *The Kyrie (spoken)

In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

    Lord, have mercy.

For the peace from above, and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.

    Lord have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world, for the wellbeing of the church of God, and for unity of all, let us

    pray to the Lord.

    Lord, have mercy.

For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

    Lord have mercy.

Help save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

    Amen.

    *The Prayer of the Day

Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, Your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in

Your grace, and transform us by Your Spirit, that we may follow after Your Son, Jesus Christ, our

Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

    Amen.

The First Lesson Genesis 1:1-5 1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and

darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and

God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called

Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

    Psalm 29

The Second Lesson Acts 19:1-7 19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus,

where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became

believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 Then he said,

“Into what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Paul said, “John

baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after

him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When

Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and

prophesied— 7 altogether there were about twelve of them.

*The Gospel Acclamation (spoken in unison)

Alleluia. A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with who I am well pleased.”

    Alleluia. (Matthew 3:17)

The Holy Gospel Mark 1:4-11 4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness

of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going

out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was

clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He

proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down

and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the

    Holy Spirit.”

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And

just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like

a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well

    pleased.”

    Sermon “CLAIMED BY GOD”

Solo "This Is The Spirit’s Entry Now" -North American Traditional

    (8:45 a.m.) Jay Bannister (11:00 a.m.) Joshua Fischer

This is the Spirit's entry now: the water and the word,

The cross of Jesus on your brow, the seal both felt and heard.

    This miracle of life reborn comes from the Lord of breath;

The Sinless One from life was torn; our life comes through His death.

Let water be the sacred sign that we must die each day

To rise again by His design as foll'wers of His way.

Renewing Spirit, hear our praise for your baptismal pow'r

That washes us through all our days. Come, cleanse again this hour.

    Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth,

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

    born of the Virgin Mary,

    suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

    He descended to the dead.

  • 5

    On the third day he rose again;

    He ascended into heaven

He is seated at the right hand of the Father

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

    the holy catholic church,

    the communion of saints,

    the forgiveness of sins,

    the resurrection of the body,

    and the life everlasting. Amen.

    The Prayers of Intercession

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of

    God’s creation.

The Minister concludes each petition with “Lord In Your Mercy,” and the response is, “Hear our

    Prayer.”

    The Lord’s Prayer

    L. Lord, remember us in your Kingdom and teach us to pray:

    C. Our Father, who art in heaven,

    hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is

    in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

    and forgive us our trespasses

    as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory

    forever and ever. Amen.

    SENDING

    *The Blessing

Almighty God, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen.

(Silence is observed for meditation as candles are extinguished.)

    Congregational Meeting

Please note: In order to keep everyone safe during this time of COVID-19, the Church Council has

decided to hold our next Semi-Annual Meeting of the Congregation via Zoom. The meeting will take

place on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. We are very thankful to Mike Cox who will be

setting up this meeting over the internet. More details will follow. In the meantime, all Committee

Chairs for 2020, need to turn in their Annual Reports so that they can be printed in time for this

    meeting.

Guidelines for Worship in the Sanctuary

Offering plates will not be passed during the worship service but instead, be placed at the entrances.

To help facilitate social distancing, we will be using every other pew in worship, and using the ends of each pew. Each seat will be marked with a bulletin.

The pews unused from the Early Service will be used at the Late Service.

Surfaces will be cleaned after the Early Service.

All hymnals have been removed from the pew. We will continue to use a bulletin containing the worship service.

Several recent studies have found that forceful, sustained breathing, such as during singing, appears to pose a greater danger of spreading the coronavirus. To minimize these dangers, the

singing of hymns, the Kyrie, and the Psalms, will be omitted. In addition to a prelude, we will

be using a soloist for a hymn and speak the remaining parts of the liturgy.

The Sharing of the Peace has been omitted.

We will be refraining from handshaking and hugging.

No nursery or Sunday School will be offered at this time.

The distribution of Holy Communion will be modified to minimize touch.

We will be using wafers instead of bread at this time.

Cups of wine and grape juice will be pre-filled, and cups will be spaced out on the serving tray to eliminate accidental touching of nearby cups.

For the protection of others, the wearing of masks is strongly encouraged during worship. You are encouraged to bring your own mask, however, masks will also be available at the door.

We will continue to record one of the worship services every Sunday morning and post these on the internet, as we have been doing.
