Dear Friends, Please read Psalm 103 verses 8-13
Verse 8 - The setting of this Psalm is the incident of the Golden Calf in the wilderness. In this verse the Psalmist reflects on God’s character in dealing with the sin of His people. This is one of those verses in which we often quote or often think to ourselves but do we really believe that this is true of God? Often we have a mixed up idea of God and how He relates to us. Too often we have this thought in the recesses of our mind that God is angry with us – if only we could take this verse truly to our hearts and live it out – what a freedom would come into our lives as a result?
Verse 9 - builds on the character revealed in verse 8. Our experience of human forgiveness is that the past is always being dragged back into the present. Here we encounter God’s gracious compassion in action – He does not always accuse. His eyes are not those of an accuser! He may be justly angry at our sin but He does not keep on accusing or criticising us nor does He maintain His anger for long. Good news indeed!
Verse 10 - I think this is one of the most beautiful verses in the Psalms. What a wonderful truth and picture of mercy and grace. Sometimes we don’t fully understand how we should be treated because of our sin – but one look at the cross should bring it home to our hearts and minds. Yet, God in His mercy and grace does not treat us as we deserve nor does He seek to repay us for our sin. How often we meet people who seek to repay us for our wrongs on them. We hear statements like – it is a long road in which there is no turning, or I will get him in the long grass. Thankfully that is not how God deals with us.
Verse 11 – again we have a powerful verse, an amazing expression of God’s love for us. We often sing with the children in Holy Trinity that God’s love is so high we cant’ get over it and so wide we can’t get round it – but I wonder do we really believe it or even begin to understand it. I sometimes tell Taylor I love her more than the moon, the stars and the whole wide world. That doesn’t
even begin to express God’s love towards me and you. Jesus Loves me, this I know for the bible tells me so. Thos words are some of the most profound and we think they are only a children’s hymn. Once again we need to let this verse take deep root in our souls and to remind our hearts and lives of this truth everyday.
Verse 12 - this Psalm is replete with amazing verses. What a verse of comfort to our souls today. How many of us need to hear these words every day, maybe more than once. I don’t mind confessing there are days when my soul needs to hear those words spoken with compassion, mercy and grace. Powerful words. Powerful, words with an eternal meaning. The east never meets the west. My sins are gone forever – He, God has removed my sin from me – I am free, forgiven and redeemed.
Verse 13 – I am sure like me many of you parents cannot remain angry for long with your child(ren). Even though sometimes I get really angry with as a father I long for my daughter to know how much I truly love her. That is a poor analogy for how much my heavenly Father loves me. My heavenly father is compassionate to me – Isaiah 42 verse 3 is one of my favourite images of God’s compassion. I read once that compassion is not just feeling sorry for someone but actually getting down in the gutter with them – is that not what God has done for me and you in Christ – He got down into the gutter of our lives and lifted us up and put us on the rock that is eternal?
These verses are amazing. They just build and build – like a choir getting louder and louder. What starts as a whisper in our souls rises to a crescendo of praise because of the character of God which is revealed here. More importantly is for us to believe this each day and let it take root and grow in our lives.
Yours in Christ
Rev Alan McCann

TEA and COFFEE after the Services

From The Treasurer
Harvest appeal in aid of the heating system. The select vestry are investing in the heating system by adding additional controls that should allow more flexibility and control of temperature within rooms of the building. Prior to this we only could control the timing of the heat being on.
This work will cost in the region of £6000 and the vestry ask that you donate as generously as possible towards this work.
Envelopes will be available from Sunday 6th October 2013.
In turn the vestry would be hopeful of making savings on oil allowing the heat to remain on for longer periods during the year.
