WorldMissionSunday

BISHOP'S OFFICEPASTORAL CENTER

40 NORTH MAIN AVENUE, ALBANY, NEW YORK 12203

October 11, 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ::

The purpose of World Mission Sunday is to raise ourawareness of the needs of the Church in mission areas of ourworld. Much of our world has taken Pope Francis to its heart. He speaks constantly of “going to the peripheries” and an-nouncing that Jesus loves them. In this spirit our Holy Fatheraccepts the responsibility of providing for the needs of theMission Church. This special appeal is a very important sourceof providing Pope Francis with what he needs to help our mis-sions.

In our Catholic faith, we have a strong belief that we shareeach other’s joys and we embrace each other’s needs. WorldMission Sunday, this year on October 23rd, reminds us of thisdimension of our faith. It affords us the opportunity to pray forthe people in mission areas of the world and, as well, for thosewho minister to them. World Mission Sunday also presents uswith the opportunity to offer Pope Francis some financial as-sistance for the missions. It falls to our Holy Father to providefor their needs.

I know that you will be generous with both your prayersand your financial assistance. I ask that, through the interces-sion of St. Therese, Patroness of the Missions, you be grantedthe grace and peace that comes to all who believe and whoembrace the needs of others.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Edward B. ScharfenbergerBishop of Albany

By becoming the answer to someone’s prayer,we often find the answer to our own.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar

The widow in today’s Gospel is praised for her PERSE-VERANCE. In our homes perseverance is a critical ingre-dient to resolving differences and teaching lessons andskills to children. Perseverance is always an act of faith inthe goodness of the other person.

Reflections on today’s Scriptures

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Will not God then secure the rights of his chosenones who call out to him day and night?” The widow in to-day’s parable didn’t give up. She kept “bothering” the judgeby coming to him and asking for a decision in her favor.Ultimately, her persistence caught his attention and influ-enced his behavior. Jesus seems to be teaching us today thatthis quality of faithful persistence is a good one to have. Thus, he advises us to call out to God not once, not twice, but “day and night.” This is a fitting image for the idea ofcontinual prayer; it goes on all the time without ceasing.

As this Gospel reading says in the opening line,Jesus wanted to teach his disciples how to “pray alwayswithout becoming weary.” It's interesting that the methodhe used for this instruction was to emphasize the reward ofsuch persistent prayer. The parable’s conclusion assures usthat for those who pray without giving up, God “will see toit that justice is done for them speedily.” Perhaps this attrac-tive promise is supposed to keep us from losing hope, fromthrowing in the towel, from becoming “weary” when ourrequests don't seem to be getting heard.

Following the example of this determined widow,we need not fear to repeatedly make our requests known toGod. In fact, we should make a point of it! If we only offerour prayers of petition halfheartedly, without real convic-tion, persistence, or sincerity, they are not as powerful asthey could be. But when we truly commit to taking theserequests before the Lord, day after day (and night afternight!) then we are displaying a kind of profound faith inGod’s ability to act on our behalf. So, full of hope and trust, let's keep “bothering” this truly just Judge!

–– Gina Loehr
