OUR PARISH’S LAY PARISH TRUSTEES
You may have noticed that from time to time, wemention our parish trustees. In fact, in civil law (NYS), eachRoman Catholic parish is seen as an “incorporated body”governed by a Board of Trustees which includes the Bishop,Vicar General/Moderator of the Curia, the pastor and twolay individuals (Lay Trustees) subject to the canonical juris-diction of the Diocesan Bishop, according to NYSLaw. The Parish Trustees act to ensure the wellbeing of theparish, especially with regard to its fiduciary health and theyhave the responsibility for the care and preservation of thetemporalities and property of the parish corporation.
Some example of the role of the Lay Trustees mighthelp…The Board of Trustees votes to approve any sale ofreal property. Following the approval of the DiocesanBishop, the parish may then petition the NYS courts for anorder to allow the sale. The Board of Trustees would need toact in a similar manner if the parish mortgages or leases anyof its real property. Along with the Parish Finance Council, the Lay Trustees play an active role in the review of the an-nual parish corporation budget. Additionally, the Lay Trus-tees are responsible for reviewing and signing the annualfinancial report of the parish corporation along with the pas-tor, after the Finance Council has reviewed it. The report isthen forwarded to the Bishop. The two Lay Trustees alsohave a key role in counseling and advising the pastor (andother key parish groups such as the Finance Council or Pas-toral Council) about all parish matters and of offering feed-back and observations.
The Board of Trustees usually meets officially oncea year (in our parish it is usually in the late Spring). It is animportant meeting and formal notice of the meeting is re-quired. Minutes are kept and are approved. The Bishop mustapprove the appointment of new Lay Trustees. Lay Trusteesserve yearly terms, renewable for up to a total of six years.Lay Trustees are usually ex officio members of the parishPastoral Council and the Finance Council.
Obviously, the role of the Lay Trustee is therefore avital one for the parish as well as carrying legal responsibili-ties. Therefore, to fulfill this key role and legal requirement, what qualities might be required of a Lay Trustees? Theyshould be…
A parishioner and a person of faith; a committed disci-ple of the Lord
A person of prayerA person of integrity and able to maintain strict confi-
dentialityA person of honesty, openness, vision and of perception,
so as to be able and willing to offer good counseland give genuine and authentic feedback
A person who is available and who is accessibleA person who has the best interests of the mission and
ministry of the parish (and the Church) at heart; freefrom any agendas, partisanship or personal bias.
A person with some financial background given thevarious fiduciary responsibilities
We have been so blessed to have Mary Howard andthe late Kathryn McDonald as our two Lay Trustees here atHoly Trinity parish and we owe a great debt of gratitude forall that they have so generously given. Of course, Kathrynpassed away just before I began as pastor at Holy Trinityand so it has been important to find a new trustee. I havedelayed this so that I could get to know people, as well as tohave time to consult about who might be the new trustee. The Bishop must also approve the new trustee. I am verypleased to announce that Michael Cozzolino is our new trus-tee and his term will begin on 1st September. Many thanks toMichael for accepting this appointment and continuedthanks to Mary for all that she does. Please do keep themboth in your prayers and indeed please continue to pray forthe many, many people, staff and volunteers who serve ourparish and school community in so many ways.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Each year, the annual Peter's Pence Collection for theHoly Father is held in support of the works of the HolyFather. The proceeds from this collection fund emergencyrelief assistance to those who suffer from war, oppression, disease and natural disasters. Through works of charity,Catholics stand in solidarity with the weak, the defenseless, and the voiceless, and they sustain those who suffer. Wejoin with the Holy Father in bringing a little more mercyinto the world.
Pope Francis called to us in his 2016 Urbi et Orbi ad-dress, “May efforts be made everywhere to promote theculture of encounter, justice, and reciprocal respect, whichalone can guarantee the spiritual and material welfare of allpeople.”
Your contributions to the Peter’s Pence Collection allowus to assist in making it possible for the Holy Father tocarry out his charitable works around the world.
This year the collection in our diocese is scheduled forthe weekend of July 29-30, 2017.
I ask you to consider contributing to this collection, andI am grateful for your generosity. Together let us ask theLord to bless the Holy Father and us as well as those inneed throughout the world.
Your servant in Christ,
Edward B. ScharfenbergerBishop of Albany

Reflections on today’s Scriptures
The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the king-dom of their Father.” This beautiful image gives us aglimpse into heaven. The saints who reside there radiate abrightness, a warmth that resembles the sun itself. Gatheredaround the throne of God, they share in the luminous pres-ence of the King of Kings, the true Son of the Father.
Perhaps there really is something spiritual about thenearly universal craving to enjoy a tropical vacation, thetrend to escape to warmer climates for the winter, or themove towards permanent residence in sunny climates. Thecontinual presence of sunshine, the enjoyable experience ofone warm day after another may be in fact like a little tasteof heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus himself describes eternalbliss using the imagery of sunshine.
But heat has its downside too. When it’s too intense, itcan actually be deadly. Think forest fire. Think desert.Think “the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing andgrinding of teeth.” These are not images of the four-starvacations that we want to last for eternity. No. Here Jesus isreferring to the hellish habitat of “all who cause others tosin and all evildoers.” That's not a trip we want to take.
As uncomfortable as it may be, we need to examine our-selves to be sure we’re not on board a train that’s going inthe wrong direction. We need to identify and acknowledgeany patterns of sin that may have crept into our lives, andseek God’s forgiveness. That will get us back on the righttrack, enabling us to be counted among “the children of thekingdom.”
Let’s aim for a journey to that kingdom, the one true tripto paradise that lasts for all eternity.
