On behalf of the Board of Directors of EASS, the staff and those we serve I want to thank you for your recent $779 contribution. We are grateful for the continued support of our mission. We are better able to do what we do because of your faith and trust in us. During February EASS distributed food to 149 families helping 430 people. 199 people benefited from the Clothing Bank. We provided 110 rides through the Transportation Service. We also helped 10 new families, having 22 members. 18 families (51 family members) benefited from our Emergency Financial Assistance Program expending $2,617.63 in financial assistance to help with prescriptions and home heating fuel. “He is Risen, He is Risen Indeed, Alleluia!” On Easter morning and throughout the season of Easter, we will open our liturgies with this proclamation: He is Risen! The tomb in that garden outside Jerusalem was empty on that first Easter morning because God had acted to raise Jesus from the dead. No longer would sin and death limit nor define the life of God’s human creatures. This is a proclamation of life, but does it speak to us today? Are they merely “church” words for our liturgies in the chancel, or do they address how we live everyday? The gospel lessons during this current time of Lent, especially the John texts of the woman at the well, the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus all proclaim God’s renewing power to draw individuals out of broken and worn life situations into new life as given by Jesus. These texts teach us of God’s will to renew our lives today, in the midst of our present. The Easter word of resurrection speaks of far more than what God will do for us in death. God wills for us healing and renewed energy for life now, today, as we face the hardships of life. God’s will for life challenges us also regarding the issues of our day. The political “hot button” issues of

affordable/available health care for all people, the fate and settlement of refugees, meeting the needs of those in need, the young and the very old, immigration reform, and a host of other issues that typically are seen to be purely political subjects are matters of faith. Jesus’ resurrection makes the cutting of funds for programs such as Meals on Wheels a faith matter. It is God’s will that the lives of his people be sustained in all their needs. To be “pro life” means that a person must support all aspects of human life far beyond just the single question of abortion. I have been frustrated by the malaise and “laissez faire” attitude I have seen exhibited during this Lent. The worship themes of this Lenten season have spoken very directly to what is happening in our days. Easter is not just a celebration for the sanctuary nor for the day of death. It speaks to how we approach life now, in this moment. God comes to us to give us new energy, to heal hurts, to right wrongs, to fire up our hope, and to empower our work to sustain the lives of all people– every last one. He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed, Alleluia! Live this new life now, every day! Amen. In Christ, Pastor Herbener

Stewardship Special Giving for APRIL: Water Street Mission It Takes A Community

It could have been the aroma of homemade fried chicken on the stove top, the taste of sweet peach cobbler, the sound of infectious laughter, or maybe it was the sight of dozens of shoes piled by the door. There was just something that brought so much warmth, so much love into that room. A humble, compassionate and resilient woman, Francis Ransome, opened the doors of her first home in over 25 years to the people who God used to carry her to where she is today. Mentors, pastors, case workers and friends of Water Street Mission gathered with tears and pride in their eyes. Francis spent years of her life running away from God and His call on her life. She sought out anything to find the worth and affirmation she desired. Drugs and alcohol had a stronghold over her, powering her motives and desires. Francis opened with, “Sometimes when your children call you, as a mother, you drop everything.” Francis left New York, left everything she knew to be in Pennsylvania. Before too long, her daughter’s landlord expressed that Francis was breaching her daughter’s lease and she had to leave. And just like that, in the peak of winter, Francis was left in the streets of an unknown city. “When I first went to CHOC (Water Street Mission’s emergency shelter), I was disgusted by the people who surrounded me. My heart was hard. Judgement and entitlement filled me. Once I began to look at myself, I realized that these were people in my same situation.” After this conviction, Francis immediately wanted more for her life. She poured her time into the chapel services, devotions and classes that Water Street Mission offers. “Christ is the center of everything. That is what is so different about Water Street Mission. In Health Services, they pray for you. In Food Services, they pray for you. In the Enrichment Center, they taught me how to make a resume and use a computer, but also how to grow closer to my Savior…Ultimately, what changed my life was the chance to find Christ. I was given the chance to find Christ.” Today, Francis is working full-time as a care provider and going to school for her Nurse Assistant certification. She loves to fill her new home with as many of her friends and family as she can. She continually attests to the faithfulness of God that she has seen through each season of her life. Romans 5:20-21 says, “Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” No matter how deep in the power of sin our rebelliousness has driven us, in Christ, grace abounds all the more in order that righteousness, rather than sin, and life, rather than death, might have the final word.

Turkey Hill Moo Money Program Thanks to everyone who has been supporting this and bringing in their lids. If you haven’t started to save your lids, please consider doing so!! Save your Turkey Hill milk lids with the Moo Money sticker on and put them in the container in the Assembly Area. The following Turkey Hill milk items contain these stickers: Whole, 2%, 1% & Fat Free milk; Chocolate milk; Strawberry milk & Orange Cream milk. Turkey Hill will donate $50 for every 500 lids collected. NOTE: PLEASE LEAVE THE STICKERS ON THE LIDS; THE LID WITH THE STICKER MUST BE TURNED IN FOR CREDIT.

Redner’s Save-A-Tape Program Redner’s Market offers a program for members who shop at Redner’s Markets to help their congregations support a designated community program. You MUST apply for a Redner’s Save-a-Tape card and show it each time you make a purchase. Your receipt MUST say Save-a-Tape at the bottom, or it will not be eligible for this program.

Place your receipts in the designated box in the Assembly Area. Redner’s will contribute 1% of every $5000 worth of purchases. Our designated program will be the community meals. The total raised through these 2 programs has been: $2,877.31. Not bad for items that would have just been thrown away!!

Correction!!!! There is a misconception that Luther Lunch Ladies is only for widows. THIS IS NOT TRUE! It is open to ANY lady from Trinity-- widow, divorcee, single etc. We meet the 4th Wednesday of each month , travel to a different restaurant

Air Conditioner Replacement At the March council meeting, the church council accepted the Property Committee’s proposal to engage Ressler and Matter to replace the AC system at a cost of $38,000, with a contingency fund of $7000 (for unseen expenses such as replacing duct work). The work will begin this spring. Currently we have $40,000+ toward the project. Thank you to all who have contributed. Once the AC work is completed, we will move on to the next project on the Building Improvement list. We will keep you informed as we move forward.

Trini Mini Tuesdays and Thursdays: 3:30-5:30. ALL ARE WELCOME: The Trini Mini Afterschool program to provide homework

help and related activities for children in grades one through six has grown to an attendance of 20-24 on a regular basis. The

sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. Help is needed between 4:00 pm – 5 pm for reading and math support. Other activities include educational games,

crafts, snacks and fun! Volunteers for the above may make their own schedules for attending. Liberal vacation, holidays and happiness provided. Must enjoy

elementary age behaviors! The kids are really well mannered, enthusiastic and appreciative.

LSS Responds to WV Floods & Gulf Coast Flooding Even as the floodwaters recede in West Virginia, the extent of the devastation rises. Help is needed immediately, and thanks to your generosity we are able to respond to our neighbors’ need. “As part of the Always Being Made New campaign, we committed to raise $100,000 to be able to respond to local disasters,” Bishop Jim Dunlop said. “Now our neighbors in WV- Western Maryland Synod need someone to respond to their immediate need, and we were able to send $20,000 from this fund to Bishop Matt Reigel for relief efforts. I invite you go give generously to help address the needs in WV and to replenish our synod’s LDR Fund so that we are able to respond as quickly to emergencies in the future.” Mark your checks earmarked for LDR-WV Flood. **Now in addition LDR is responding to the flooding along the Gulf Coast. If you want to contribute, mark your check for “LDR-Gulf Coast Flooding”.

Three Score and Ten Banquet This year’s Three Score and Ten Banquet will be on Sunday April 23 at 12:15. Invitations have been mailed out. A signup sheet for servers, delivers, and cleanup crews is in the Gathering Area. A response is required no later than Friday April 7th. This year’s menu includes: Ham Loaf, Hash Brown Casserole, Brown Butter Carrots, Cole Slaw, Rolls, Ice Cream and Brownies.

Easter Egg Hunt candy donations. Donna is asking for donations of individually wrapped candies (chocolates etc.) that will be used to fill the plastic eggs used for the Easter Egg hunt on April 15. A basket will be placed on

the piano in the Gathering Area. Thank you! Trini Mini: Our afterschool program is looking for donations of snack foods for the children. Please no sweets! Pretzels, popcorn, chex mix, carrots/celery etc, but no candy/cookies etc. Thank you!

Summer is quickly approaching and it’s time to consider summer camp. Did you know that adults who attended church camp as a youth are more than 3 times as likely to remain affiliated with a religious community than those who never attended camp? Lutheran Camping Corporation offers the very best in outdoor ministry programs at Kirchenwald and Nawakwa. Campers practice living a faithful life in a non-threatening environment. Campers have opportunities for quiet, individual devotion as well as dynamic, participatory worship. Campers learn how to be disciples, eager to proclaim the Gospel and serve others. All this while having a great time in the great outdoors. This is faith in formation… and it takes

place within the setting of an outdoor community that seeks to build character, foster independence, encourage good relationships, and teach life skills… benefits that campers will carry with them for the rest of their lives. And camping isn’t just for kids! In addition to camping opportunities for kids K-11, Family Camp is offered at both Nawakwa and Kirchenwald and Elder Camp is offered at Nawakwa. Family Camp provides the same fun activities as regular camping, but also offers the opportunity to grow closer together and closer to God through intergenerational activities. Soup for Supper in Lent Simple soup meals will be served before Evening Prayer in Lent on Wednesday evenings: March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5. The meals will begin at 6:30, Evening Prayer will follow at 7:30. Sign up sheets will be posted in Gathering Area for those attending, for those who would help to provide soup and/or bread and crackers. Come and join us!

Our 2017 Stewardship Lenten Appeal

WATER! From the water of our Baptism that confirms our place as God’s children to the water we drink and use every day that provides life giving benefits to our earthy body. Water has been important to us from our very beginning. Think about it, what would our lives be if our water supply was cut off? There are places in our country and around the world where safe water is in short supply.

Our Stewardship focus for Lent will be water. You will find special envelopes in the each pew slot, The envelopes contain a label with a pitcher fountain and a place to put your name/giving envelope number. The money collected in these envelopes, during Lent, will be combined and sent to ELCA for a community to have a well. One complete well is $2500 and a share of a well is $250. We will purchase a well or as many shares as our dollars will provide.

In the gathering area, you will see a display about this outreach ministry, and also our Wishing Well. We encourage families and children to bring individual bottles of drinking water and fill the wishing well. You can bring single bottles, six packs or larger, in any quantity you choose. After Lent these bottles of water will be donated to local charities who give out water to those in need. Thank you for your support of this outreach.

IN THE COMMUNITY: COMMUNITY MEAL

UP-DATE The community meal program in Ephrata, continues to be an important part of the ministry here at Holy Trinity. There are a number of people who help with food preparation, food and monetary donation, and also coming out to help serve. The more people that help, the more successful the program is. The help that we get is greatly appreciated. The meal program in Ephrata continues

to grow. A weekly Thursday Evening meal is served at one of three Ephrata Churches. Watch the weekly bulletin for opportunities to contribute food or to help with meals. If you have any questions, please call Sue Watts at 738-2327

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE! Ephrata Area Social Service is in need of food items this summer and we need to start stocking their shelves now. With school being out, families will have to provide additional meals typically provided at school. This is getting harder

and harder for some of our local families. Items needed –beverage products (cool aid, juicy juice, coffee, tea, etc.), cake mixes, canned fruits, canned meats (spaghetti, spam, tuna, ravioli, etc.), canned peas, cereal, hamburger helper, premixed Jell-O snacks, pancake mix and syrup Note: They do not need canned corn, canned green bean or canned soups. This year our goal is to provide 75 full boxes of food items this summer and we need your help! Please bring one or two items each week to help reach our goal. If everyone donates – “many hands make light work”. Let’s help those in need in our community. The Social Ministry Committee thanks you for your continued support!

Volunteers needed to deliver the

altar flowers to sick/shut-in/hospitalized members following the 2nd liturgy. All deliveries will be local. If interested contact Pastor Herbener or the church office.

Peter’s Porch Prep Peter’s Porch at Zion Lutheran

Church (435 Main Street, Akron) is open every third Saturday of the month. Doors open at 8:30am till 10:30am. Join us for a free breakfast, free clothing and free groceries/toiletries for families and singles. Would you be willing to volunteer at this community outreach? The two Wednesdays before Peter’s Porch is prep... packing groceries and sorting through donations. Clothing donations may be dropped off at Zion Monday – Friday 9am-2pm. Questions can be directed to Tracy in Zion’s Church office: (717)859-2100 [email protected] BINGO AT LUTHER CARE, LITITZ PA Holy Trinity Lutheran of Ephrata has provided Bingo on the first Monday of each month for many years for the skilled care unit at Luther Care in Lititz.

A dedicated group of volunteers helps wheel the residents into the activity room. During the hour of Bingo play, volunteers help residents look for numbers. At Bingo, everyone who participates gets a quarter. Subsequent rounds are played until approximately 3-4 places and quarters are won. The “prize”, can be used at a vending machine.

Attendance is anywhere between 20 to 28 folks. Any questions, call Darryll or Kathy Kuhns, 610-937-0850. The residents are very appreciative for activities such as bingo, to brighten their days. Additional Nursery volunteers are needed to assist with child care on Sunday mornings. If interested, speak to Pastor Herbener. Do you like to knit and/or crochet? A new ministry has begun here at Trinity-the making of prayer shawls. If you are interested in joining this group please call Marti Nissley (859-2847) or Kathy Kuhns (610-410-5410). They will send you patterns and dimensions. Soft yarn is suggested. Lap blankets may also be made. When a shawl or lap blanket is completed prayers for its recipient are said and it is presented to someone as a physical symbol of our care and prayers. Those who receive our prayer shawls are literally wrapped in our prayers and feel God’s presence and the community of His people in a most special way.

Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels needs volunteer packers, every Thursday and the 2nd and 3rd Fridays of each month, from 8:30– 10:30. Please call 733-4846 between 8:30 & 11:00. Thank you!
