Every Spring I do the same thing; every Spring I am amazed once again. In late March or early April, I start looking at the mounds of dead leaves and dried up plants that cover our front gardens. I especially start watching the dead catmint by our study windows. As the snow melts, and the ground is just starting to warm up, I know I need to get busy. I pick a sunny day, usually on my day off, and go out and get to work. The project is simply to cut, pull, and remove all the dead plants in that front garden. Only this particular area is critical, because of what is underneath. I pull out a large, old, plastic tarp, spread it on the lawn, and start pulling and throwing clumps of dead catmint onto the pile. And as I dig and pull, suddenly I see them: the daffodils! Ever so slowly, these harbingers of Spring are making their way through the cold ground, squeezing through the dark mulch, and reaching up to find the warm sun. I need to get the dead plants off and away, so they don’t smother and rot the eager new buds. Years ago my wife told me that we need to remove these old weeds early in the spring because of the buds underneath. I was skeptical; I didn’t believe her that the buds would be active so early. She knew that they were there, they were growing, and that they needed the warmth and light of the sun to keep growing. Each Spring it is a small, quiet, amazing miracle….. new life in the midst of the cold, dark, rotten, dead plants from the previous year.
And, of course, this is the perfect illustration of Easter. Out of the darkness of the Good Friday comes the light of Easter morning; out of the sin and death of this world comes the promise of new life and forgiveness for all people. Out of our pain… comes new hope. As we take off the black cloth draped over the altar cross on Easter morning, we proclaim…”He is risen. He is risen indeed!” May our Spring gardening chores give us hope for warmer and sunnier days to come as we remove the dead plants covering our daffodil buds; may our Risen Lord give us hope as we lift off the sin and despair of this world, living now in the grace and peace of the God of all time! May the hope of Easter morning give us strength for all the challenges that may come our way.
Profiles in Caring Joyce Langer, Laundry Aide, joined the Skaalen Staff in November 2014.
Joyce and her husband, Rick, have two sons (2 daughter-in-laws) and six grandchildren ranging in age from 9 to 22 years.
Joyce and Rick enjoy visiting Houses of Prayer in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Kansas City, MO. Joyce is also an avid reader and over the years has made a few quilts.
We asked Joyce if she had a treasured memory or time at Skaalen. Joyce said, “My most treasured times with residents are when I am able to pray with them and we talk about Jesus and share favorite Bible verses that we find comfort in.”
When asked if there is someone who influenced her decision to pursue a career in long term care, Joyce replied, “My faith in the Lord Jesus Christ influences me to love and serve others. Especially the orphans and widows and widowers – this verse sums it up ‘Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: To visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep one self unspotted from the world.’ “ James 1:27
Thank you Joyce, for sharing your caring spirit with the residents and staff at Skaalen.

New Dining Program
Spring is here and it is time for changes! Food & Nutrition Services is excited to tell you about the new dining program here at Skaalen! Resident choice and person centered dining are very important to us. With assistance from our resident dining committee, our dining team and a consultant chef, we have redesigned our menu offerings! We will begin our new menus on April 25th and they will offer a main entrée menu with a stylish appearance that looks similar to our current menu structure though the bonus now is that there is a separate restaurant style menu called the “Home Trends” menu. The Home Trends menu is available from the kitchen throughout the day allowing residents to eat a variety of items outside the traditional meal times. We are excited to move forward with the new program! If you have any questions, please call the Food & Nutrition Services Department at (608) 873-5651, extension 7223.
