• The Holy Week is a religious celebration which represents the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

• Easter marks the end of Lent, forty days of prayer and penance, the first one of which is called Ash Wednesday.

Page 4: Holy week in spain

• The last week of Lent is the most important period and it’s called Holy Week.

• It’s celebrated during the spring, in March or April; and it’s based on a lunisolar calendar.

Page 5: Holy week in spain

• The Holy week is made up of a lot of days. It begins on Palm Sunday and it finishes on Resurrection Sunday. People don´t usually work during this period and have some days as holidays with their children and families.

• At this time, the whole family meets; children usually play with board games or something like that, and adults cook special desserts.

• Christian people usually go to church and Holy Week processions.

Page 7: Holy week in spain

• There are several brotherhoods which show the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus by means of processions with religous images like these.

Page 8: Holy week in spain

• There are different brotherhoods, each one with its own clothing, colours, brooches, and religious figures (”pasos” in Spanish).

Page 10: Holy week in spain

• There are a lot of processions and each one has a particular meaning.

Procession of Palm Sunday.

• Jesus arrived inJerusalem on a donkey, so we celebrate this day with a procession, and olive branches are also given as a symbol of faith.

Page 12: Holy week in spain

•Holy Monday: Jesus put the stall holders out of the Temple because he said this place was sacred.

•The most important thing on Holy Tuesday was when Jesus was sentenced to death and he announced it to his disciples and the Virgin Mary.

Page 13: Holy week in spain

• Holy Wednesday: one of Jesus’ disciples wanted to kill him in exchange for thirty silver coins.

•Holy Thursday: The Last Supper with his disciples was celebrated, he said goodbye to the Virgin Mary and was taken to prison.

Page 14: Holy week in spain

• Resurrection Sunday. This is the last procession. It shows Jesus’ resurrection and meeting with the Virgin Mary.

• Holy Friday. There’s a procession which shows Jesus’ death by means of his crucifixion (by Jewish people and his disciples.)

Page 15: Holy week in spain

• This is another procession for a special celebration. A prisoner is released and he walks in procession with brotherhood people.

• Music is a very important element during the Holy Week in Spain. Music bands accompany the steps of the “Nazarenes” and help the atmosphere of the celebrations. The most common instruments are drums, bugles and trumpets.

Page 17: Holy week in spain

• In called Hellín and Tobarra, two villages of Albacete, thousands of people play the drums non-stop for 24 hours! It is amazing, because the noise is really deafening.

• At this time, Spanish people usually have fish and sweets. We have fish because of fasting (Christian people mustn´t eat meat on Fridays during Lent).

“Torrijas”:toasts of bread coated in egg, fried in oil and finally coated with sugar or jam.

Pastries.• Eggs, oranges or

milk, sugar, oil and flour are mixed. Then, they are fried and finally coated in sugar.

Garlic soup.• We can do it with

eggs, toasts of bread, meat, garlic and pepper.

These sweets are called “flowers” because of their shape. Their ingredients are eggs, milk, flour, cinnamon and lemon.
