Holy Week Celebrations Holy Week is a very important time in the Church Calendar. It is sometimes referred to as the Easter Triduum, with

three significant events leading to the celebration of Easter.

Holy Week starts with the celebration of Holy Thursday. Catholics remember Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples,

which instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist. During the Last Supper, Christ washed the feet of His disciples,

providing us an example of servant leadership we should follow, “I have given you example that you also should

do,” John 13:15. Shortly after the Last Supper, Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, was betrayed by Judas

Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, and arrested.

Good Friday marks the day Jesus was questioned by the Chief Priests, Pharisees and Pontius Pilate. Though Pilate

was eager to release Jesus, he was afraid of the crowd and ‘washed his hands’ to free himself of responsibility. This

is a good reminder to us to be courageous and not content to ‘go along with the crowd’. Jesus was tortured,

crucified and died on the hill at Calvary, or Golgotha.

The last part of the Triduum is Easter. Jesus was missing from the tomb he had been laid in and began appearing

to His followers. Jesus has overcome death and given us new life.

The whole school has been preparing a liturgy to celebrate these events. Please join us in our Holy Week

celebrations next Wednesday morning, 9:15am in the School Hall.

Incitāre 2017

On Tuesday, March 14, eleven students from St Francis Xavier participated in Incitāre -

a retreat day for Yr 6 students in the Diocese of Lismore. Our students joined with

other students from Catholic schools in Coffs Harbour, Sawtell, Bellingen and Dorrigo.

Students participated in groups led by Year 9 students from St John Paul College and

played games, journaled and reflected on the person of Christ and their mission to follow Jesus. A strong

theme emerging from the day was our need to be courageous and firm in our faith. A great day was had

by all. Our students have created an iMovie about their reflections on the day and will show this at the

next assembly. This will also be posted on the school Facebook page. Incitāre is part of the Student

Proclaim initiative from the Diocese of Lismore.

Impetigo (school sores)

We have had a confirmed case of Impetigo (school sores) within the school community. The following information

has been obtained from https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/impetigo

Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection which causes sores and blisters. It's very common and affects mainly

children. Exclude until appropriate treatment has commenced. Sores on exposed surfaces must be covered with a

waterproof dressing. Speak to your doctor if you or your child has symptoms of impetigo. Impetigo is not usually

serious, but it can sometimes be confused with other skin conditions such as cellulitis, contact dermatitis and

insect bites. Your doctor may want to rule these out.

Impetigo usually gets better on its own, without the need for treatment, within two to three weeks. However, antibiotic creams are usually recommended because the infection spreads easily.

Most people are no longer contagious after 48 hours of treatment, or once their sores have dried and healed.

ALLERGY ALERT

Nuts and other food allergies

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have students in our school and some who are recently enrolled who are at risk of Anaphylaxis. They have an allergy

to peanuts and/or tree nuts. Exposure to nut products will trigger a serious reaction, and such a reaction (anaphylaxis)

could be fatal if not treated quickly and appropriately.

In order to provide as safe environment as possible for all children, we are asking for your cooperation in not sending nuts

or nut products to school at any time. This will help to reduce the risk for these children. Nut products include peanut

butter, nutella, crunchy nut biscuits, peanut muesli bars and dips.

The school, staff and parents of ‘at risk’ children are implementing strategies to help these children to be aware of their

allergies and to learn responsibility. Whilst we cannot guarantee the elimination of nut products from the school environ-

ment, your full and alert cooperation will ensure risks are minimised especially around special food events, for example,

cake stalls, parties and everyday lunch and recess.

We understand that these measures will require extra thought when packing your child’s lunch. Thank you for your co-

operation, which we understand may cause some inconvenience, however it will enable these children and their families

to feel supported and safer in their school environment.

If you require further information regarding Anaphylaxis please contact the school.
