Thank you for being a part of great things for our students! School mass next week will be on Tuesday, November 1st for All Saints Day. There will be no mass on Thursday of next week. Friday, November 4th is First Friday Adoration at Holy Rosary. Please feel free to visit church during the day on Friday to spend some quiet time in Adoration. On Sunday, November 6th, Holy Rosary sophomores will make their Confirmation at 2:00pm in church. Please keep these teens in your prayers as they enter into this special sacrament. May God bless and keep you, Joan Fredrich

NOVEMBER

November begins with a

double feast in remembrance of those who have died.

The saints, people whom God had “harvested” into heaven, are remembered on November 1, All Saints’ Day. Many members of our own

families have died. They also are part of God’s “harvest.” We pray for them on November 2,

All Souls’ Day. During these days, we pray that one day all people will share

the glory of the saints.

All through the month, we offer prayers to remember the dead and to thank God for the

harvest. We also ask God to provide enough for the poor of the world. We offer prayers of

intercession for those who suffer most: the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the jobless.

Holy Rosary – the GREEN and the Gold! Thank you for helping us to GO GREEN-ER at Holy Rosary by checking out the parent pack online! Some forms that need to be filled out

and returned will still come home on paper with your child.

Indiana started the Twenty-first Century Scholars in 1990 to ensure that every student can afford a college education. Income-eligible 7th and 8th graders who enroll in the program and fulfill a pledge of good citizenship are guaranteed to receive up to four years of undergraduate tuition* at any participating public college or university in Indiana. For more information on Twenty-first Century Scholars, visit www.in.gov/ssaci/2345.htm.

EB Awareness Week October 25-31 was EB Awareness Week. Because this was also Red Ribbon Week, we wanted to take some time out next week, Oct. 31-Nov. 4 to recognize EB Awareness at Holy Rosary. As you likely know, we have two students at Holy Rosary with EB, Sophie (5D) and Sam (1D) Schulz. EB is short for Epidermolysis Bullosa. In simple terms, EB is a blistering of the skin. It is a rare disabling and life threatening disease. It is not contagious and cannot harm you in any way. During the week next week we will take some time to learn a little more about EB and to especially pray for children and families effected by EB. We ask that our families take time next week to do the same. To learn more about EB, please visit www.ebkids.org.

From Ann Nagy, Music Teacher K-8 Advent Program Information Please mark Dec. 7, 2011 on your calendars as the date of the Holy Rosary School’s Advent Program to be presented by all students in Grades K-8 (including band) at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm in the Holy Rosary Church. The presentation of “Miracle on Bethlehem Street” by the eighth grade class will serve as a framework for the music and songs. An original song written by Jill Jackson, “All Are Welcome to Belong” will be performed by all students as a Finale. The song lyrics emphasize the Diocesan theme “All Are Welcome” and reinforce the message that we are all welcome to belong to God’s family as we celebrate the wonders of God’s love.

ISSMA Music Contest Information Students in Grades 5-8 who are enrolled in band, who serve as cantors, or who take private Music lessons, are invited to participate in the ISSMA Music Contest at U of E. In this competition, students have the opportunity to earn medals for their performances. There are two separate contests, one for piano and voice and the other for band and orchestral string instruments such as violin. (not guitar). These two competitions will take place in late January or early February. The completion of a registration form and the payment of a registration fee are required to participate. Please contact Ann Nagy @ [email protected] or call 477-2271 ext. 343 or contact Mary Tucker to obtain additional contest information and registration forms.

SchoolReach Updates Over the next few weeks, we will be doing some updating in our SchoolReach email system. When we test the updates, Mrs. Fredrich will put “SchoolReach TEST” in the subject line. If you see that, you can just delete the email. If there are any failures, we should get an automatic message then we can work to correct the failed emails. Thank you! After School Dismissal – Vital Reminders

Please remember to SLOW DOWN when entering, while on and when leaving HR property at dismissal. Our main

concern is keeping students and staff SAFE while running an efficient dismissal. Do not use the Raben Tire driveway or parking lot at dismissal. This area is not supervised and is not part of our dismissal procedure.

Please do not use the front parking lot as a way to avoid the back lot dismissal procedure when you are in a hurry.

If you have a special concern or out-of-the-ordinary situation, contact the school office and we will help you make an alternative, safe, plan for picking up your children. Please do not leave your vehicle running and

unattended at dismissal. Thank you for your assistance when you see a concern or offer a suggestion.

Scholastic Book Fair Results I am pleased to announce wonderful news for our Holy Rosary Library! The books sales were considerably greater than last year's which earned extra "points" or dollars for our library purchases. Along with those special dollars, we earned a sizable profit! Our commitment to use money from the "One for Books" will be met as we donate to the St. Mary's Partners in Healing Program. The successful book fair is directly attributable to generous parents who encouraged their children to purchase books, to the parent volunteers who graciously gave of their time to help during the fair, and to seventh and eighth grade volunteers who eagerly served as "guides" for the younger students. I am grateful for all the support given to me and am truly blessed to be part of the Holy Rosary School family.

Thank you! Sincerely,

Sally Pfafflin, Librarian

Low-Fat Cranapple Acorn Squash

2 (1 lb.) Acorn Squash 2 c. Apples, peeled & chopped ½ c. Cranberries, chopped ¼ c. Raisins 3 Tblsp. Brown Sugar 2 Tblsp. Pecans ¼ tsp Nutmeg

Cut each squash in half crosswise; Scoop out seeds and discard. Trim off the bottom of each half, to allow the squash to sit upright. Combine the apples, cranberries, raisins, brown sugar, and pecans, in a bowl and mix well. Divide the apple mixture among the squash halves. Sprinkle a touch of nutmeg over each squash. Coat a shallow baking dish with non-stick spray. Arrange the squash in the dish. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until squash is tender. Serve

It’s always good to get in 5 fruits & vegetables a day. Instead of eating junk food eat an apple or orange. Grapes are a handy fruit to take along for a quick snack. Try some new vegetable. Fall Squashes are very nutritious. Use Spaghetti Squash instead of pasta for a healthy alternative. Slice an Acorn Squash for a dessert alternative. See what you can do with a new fruit or vegetable.

On February 4, 2012 Holy Rosary invites you to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our annual Holy Rosary Gala. This year’s theme, “Back to the Future” recognizes the significance this primary fundraiser has been for our parish and school families these past 20 years. The event will be held at the newly renovated Old Post Office Plaza with dinner provided by Just Rennie’s and entertainment by McFly. Silent and some new exciting live auction items will be there that you won’t want to miss!

Be sure to mark your calendars for January 19, 2012 to attend our “Glimpse into the Future” preview party. This event will be held in the Parish Hall from 6-9PM to allow first purchasing of many donated school auction items and a “peek” into some of the live items at our Gala event. Appetizers and childcare will be provided along with a raffle for exciting prizes. Online auction will not be available this year until after the “preview party”.

Finally, if you haven’t had the opportunity to sign up or attend one of our committee meetings, the next one is scheduled for Thursday, November 3 in the Parish Hall at 1:45PM. We are still in need of volunteers for silent auction items and various other projects. Let’s make this year another successful Gala for our school!

Please feel free to contact Heather Kent, Christine Gilles or me for further information.

Blessings Always,

Stacey Smith

What about all those Saints? Every day throughout the year we honor the life of at least one canonized Saint (saint with a capital “S.”). On the Solemnity of All Saints (celebrated as a Holy Day of Obligation on November 1st) the Church honors all saints (with a lower case “s”) known and unknown. The Communion of Saints includes the unknown and unsung men and women of faith who may have been forgotten or unrecognized for their faithfulness. On All Saints Day we ask for the prayers and intercessions of ALL saints. Catholic and Orthodox Christians believe that the saints of God are just as alive as you and me, and are constantly interceding on our behalf to ask the saints to prayer for you and with you is no different than to ask your Great Aunt Sally to pray. It is as if we are asking those who care for us to pray – whether they are with us in this world or the next. Saints are not divine. They are not God but they are in communion with God. The saints, those in heaven and on earth, bring us solace, support, and a lived example of faith.

Holy men and women of God, pray for us.

Pick a Patron Saint As a family, choose a Patron Saint for the year. There are Saints selected for almost every reason under the sun. Choose something that is important to your family right now. Maybe you are moving or traveling a great deal this year – St. Joseph may be just the Patron Saint you need. Include a picture or statue of your patron saint in a prayer space or on the dining room table. Learn something about him or her and pray for their intercession.

ADVENT BOOK STUDY Simple Ways: Towards the Sacred The world, our lives, our daily bread, our loved ones, our opportunities, our challenges and difficulties—all are gifts. Even the innate capacity to receive is a gift. There is not a single moment in life in which we are not given something. We can begin to notice this; we can increase our capacity to receive daily, both that which seems small and that which is big.

Join us as we reflect on the gifting of God at a Wednesday morning Book “study”.

November 2011

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

As a parent, you want your children to eat a variety of foods. But getting them to try new ones isn’t always easy. Here are a few creative ways to encourage your youngsters to taste—and enjoy—new foods.

Have a tasting party. Pick a type of food, and conduct a taste test. For example, let your children pick out differ-ent pears at the market. Put slices of each kind on separate plates, and have them make signs for each one. Family members can sample the pears and write “tasting notes” (color, flavor, texture, rat-ing on a scale of 1–5). Then, compare your findings.

Serve samples. Have you noticed how shoppers enjoy tasting samples at food stores—and often buy them afterward? Place samples of healthy foods around your kitchen, and invite your youngsters to try them after school. Tip: Spear each sample with a toothpick to make tasting even more fun.

Allergy tip Is your child lactose intol-

erant or allergic to milk? Teach him to look for food packages marked “parve” or “pareve”—that means they contain no milk prod-ucts. He can also find foods labeled “non-dairy,” but he should read the ingredient lists carefully. While they have no milk, butter, or cream, they may still contain milk proteins (watch for words like “caseinate” or “lactoglobulin”).

Swimming builds strength and endurance, works all

muscle groups, and is easy on joints and bones. Encourage your young-ster to swim year-round with trips to an indoor community pool. Or suggest that she sign up for a winter swim league. Idea: Join her in the pool and swim together, race against each other, or play tag.

Turkey treat For a fun Thanksgiving snack, make “fruit turkeys.” Cut oranges in half, and scoop out the fruit. Then, let your child mix the orange sections with other fruit (grapes, banana slices, apple chunks) and put the mixture into the shells. He can turn each one into a turkey with a pretzel-stick neck, a pear-slice head, and dill feathers.

Just for funQ: What ingredi-ent works best when it’s broken?

A: An egg!

Balancing act Can your youngster balance on his

knees? On his stomach? Challenge him with these balancing activi-ties—they’re a fun way to build coordination and overall fitness.

Try balancing on different body parts such as your side, stomach, or knees. Or balance on two different body parts (one hand and one foot).

Stack paperback books at each end of a room. Walk to one stack, pick up a book, and place it on your head. Walk to the other stack, and add another book. How many books can you pile on your head before they drop off?

Hold hands with someone, and balance on one foot each. Come up with other combinations for balancing together (one person on his back, the other on his knees). Idea: With three or more people, build a human pyramid.

Stage a contest. Select a few ingredi-ents, including a new one you would like your children to try (a vegetable, for instance). Then, divide into teams, give each side the same ingredients, and set a timer. The challenge is to arrange or pre-pare a dish using just those items. When the buzzer goes off, sample each other’s creations.

Note: Don’t get discouraged if your youngsters don’t like a new food right away. It can take many tastings—even up to 10 or 12—before children develop a taste for a new food.

Taste it!

Bullying and weight

Be a food writerA fun way to explore good

eating is to write about healthy foods. Suggest that your young-ster try these ideas.

Create a menuWhat’s for dinner tonight? On

a sheet of construction paper, your child can list and describe the items. Encourage him to point out the nutrition

benefits of each (example: “Bright orange carrots filled with vitamins that are good for your eyes and your skin”). Put the menu on the dinner table for everyone to read. Idea: Have him create the menu on a computer and make copies

to put at each person’s place.

Write a food taleEncourage your youngster to write

a story featuring healthy foods. He might make up characters like Ada the Avocado or Cauliflower Chris who get lost in Food-land and have to find their way back to the produce market. Or give him a story starter like, “If I were a banana, I would…”

Note: Younger children can dictate words or stories to you, or have them draw pictures and add letters and words they know.

Spaghetti or squash? If your children have

never had spaghetti squash, they’re in for a treat. It’s a vegetable that looks like spaghetti! And the good nutrition news: it has no fat or cholesterol, is low in calories, and is a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and minerals.

To cook a spaghetti squash, pierce holes in it, and bake at 350º until tender (about an hour). Cool 10–15 minutes, cut in half lengthwise, and scoop out the seeds. Let your chil-dren scrape out the flesh with a fork—it will come out as spaghetti-like strands.

Catch, throw, and play

Many sports and games call for catch-ing and throwing a ball. Here are ways to give your child everyday practice:

For little ones, start by tossing bean bags back and forth. They can be easier for small hands to grasp.

Practice throwing “grounders” to each other. Roll a ball to your young-ster, and have him scoop it

up and throw it back to you. Encourage your child to

play with balls of different sizes and shapes (tennis ball, basketball, wiffle ball, playground ball, football, small rubber ball). This will get him used to handling and reacting to balls for various games.

Stand 2–3 feet apart, and throw a ball to your youngster. After he catches it, he can take a giant step back. Continue tossing a ball to each other and stepping back with each catch. How far apart can you get and still catch the ball?

Suggest that your child throw a ball up in the air and catch it. How many times can he throw and catch without drop-ping the ball? Tip: Have him practice baseball skills by wearing a baseball mitt on one hand and tossing a baseball with the other.

Then, try these ideas: Drizzle on a little olive oil, and add

Parmesan cheese. Season with pepper. Toss with your favorite marinara sauce. Sauté chopped onions, minced garlic,

and sliced mushrooms until soft. Stir into the spaghetti squash strands, and place in a casserole dish. Bake at 400º until hot.

Mix with apple chunks (from 2 apples), 1 tbsp. melted butter, and 2 tbsp. maple syrup. Bake at 350º until hot.

Q: My daughter Rachel came home in tears because other kids told her she’s “too fat” to play with them during recess. What should we do?A: First, listen carefully to her concerns. Then, talk to her teacher and the school counselor. They can give Rachel ways to handle teasing and bullying. For example, if she doesn’t get angry or upset, she can take the “fun” out of teasing, and the bullies may give up after a while.

Also, watch for signs that your daughter is sad, spends too much time alone, or doesn’t have friends. And make sure she knows you love her and value her interests and abilities.

Finally, try not to dwell on her weight. Instead, keep healthy foods in the house, and help encourage physical activity by playing outside together or taking family bike rides and walks. The important thing is to get her in the habit of being active no matter what her peers say. You’ll help her build a lifetime habit of fitness.
