MARKET DRAYTON PLANNING AREA

The Market Drayton school place planning area is a lowland area situated in the north-east of the county, close to the Cheshire and Staffordshire borders. Its transport network is best served by the primary A41 and A53 routes, which provide good links to the Potteries, Crewe, Whitchurch and Chester. It also has a canal network running across the area. The main settlement is Market Drayton, a market town. The other settlements are all villages, which include Hinstock, Hodnet and Woore. Some light industry and commercial business exists and Market Drayton is a local shopping destination for the area. Tern Hill army barracks, a main military base is situated within the area, and its personnel movement can cause some issues with local school pupil numbers. The LA’s robust forecasting models indicate that sufficient school capacity exists in the rural primary schools to meet demand in the short, medium and longer term, although numbers at Hinstock Primary School will need to be closely monitored. The Market Drayton town primary schools are forecast to require expansion in the short to medium term to meet increased demand for places. Further increases in demand are forecast in the longer term resulting from new housing requirement identified in the Local Plan and these will be managed at the appropriate time. A paper will follow outlining options. Sufficient capacity exists at secondary level in the short, medium and longer-term. The LA’s regular primary and secondary forecasts have been translated into the following charts and tables to help explain the school place planning proposals the LA intends to take forward. Longer term forecasting methods have also been used in order to take account of the level of new housing investment identified in the current Local Plan to 2026.

Summary

Forecast numbers in the above charts and tables demonstrate that the Market Drayton school place planning area has sufficient capacity overall, at both primary and secondary level, to meet the demand in the short and medium term, and in the longer term at secondary level and in the rural schools. However, capacity pressures are forecast in the short to medium term in Market Drayton town primary schools. Options for addressing these issues will be provided in due course, along with options for addressing longer term capacity pressures at primary schools in the town resulting from new housing requirement identified in the Local Plan.
