We all know that smoking is bad for us, but some of us do it anyway. There was a time when smoking was seen as cool – the Marlboro Man, Joe Camel, all the celebrities who posed with a cigarette jauntily hanging from their lips. Today, though, we know the health risks associate with tobacco, and admitting that you’re a smoker elicits a similar reaction to admitting that you torture kittens. There’s a sense of shame that comes with answering “Yes” when someone asks “Do you smoke cigarettes?” (especially at the doctor’s office, where you just KNOW you’re going to get a lecture!”

NuvoCig is a high-end electronic cigarette company that offers revolutionary vaping products and accessories. They have a huge selection of flavors of their unique cartomizers that are each equivalent to two packs of traditional cigarettes, and they’re available in 5 nicotine levels (super high, high, medium, light, and non-nicotine). They also supply products like e-cigars and e-hookahs. On their website they have a list of benefits of electronic cigarettes vs. traditional cigarettes, which I’ve summarized here:

Even if you’ve never used e-cigs before, it’s pretty simple to figure out. To charge the battery, you just screw it into the USB charger and then plug in the USB (you can also plug it into a USB port, you don’t have the use the wall adapter). Once it’s charged up, you unscrew it from the USB and attach a cartomizer and you’re ready to go! As you inhale from the end of the cartomizer, the tip of the battery lights up – and there are even multiple choices for what color you’d like the tip to be (blue, green, orange, pink, or red).

The size of the NuvoCig e-cig is very similar to that of a regular cigarette (just a little bit longer), and I was quite impressed with the flavors that NuvoCig offers. I’d tried a couple of other brands of e-cigs in the past, and they were just “okay.” NuvoCig’s cartomizers provide a nice hit of flavor along with the nicotine (if you choose to even have nicotine included). The amount of “pull” needed is minimal, but even if you pull hard on it you don’t get an overwhelming amount of vapor. Of the five flavors I received, I liked the Cherry the best, closely followed by the Vanilla. (Here’s hoping they introduce a Cherry-Vanilla blend soon!)

NuvoCig also sent me their Ultimate Battery to test out. It uses the same cartomizers as the regular batteries, but has a different charger and is used slightly differently. The cartomizer screws into the battery, but then there’s an extra piece that goes over that (I think to both help secure the cartomizer in place and to streamline the assembled e-cig). This one is also larger, both in length and diameter, than the standard assembled e-cig. And instead of just pulling on the cartomizer, you press down a button on the battery first. You can also “lock” this battery – you push the button five times to lock it, and then repeat to unlock it. You get a bigger hit of vapor from the ultimate battery – too much so, if you’re not careful. The battery lasts about twice as long, but it does go through the e-liquid inside the cartomizer faster, since you’re getting more with each pull.

If you’re planning on switching over completely to e-cigs, there is a bit of an adjustment period. Traditional cigarettes don’t just have nicotine in them, as you probably know – including chemicals to help release the nicotine into your brain faster, to open up your receptors, and to enhance and prolong the effects of the nicotine. For the first couple of weeks, I continued to smoke regular cigarettes in addition to my NuvoCig. But then an interesting thing happened – when a craving would hit, I realized that I preferred the NuvoCig over my regular cigarettes. They don’t hurt my throat or lungs the way cigarettes can, and the flavors are great. They also don’t dry out my mouth and make me thirsty like regular cigarettes. AND I can choose to just take a puff or two and then put it down, I don’t have to “smoke” an entire cigarette. Just enough for a little dash of nicotine to the brain, plus getting that physical action that’s so ingrained in my behavior completed.

While NuvoCig is NOT classified as a smoking cessation device, the five different levels of nicotine available in the cartomizer means that you can slowly step down, all the way to the nicotine-free cartomizers, if you choose to do so. At that point you’re basically getting flavored water vapor! I know for me, a big part of the cigarette addiction is mental rather than physical. It’s the act of smoking, the hand-to-mouth movement, the holding of a cigarette between my fingers, just the physical actions of smoking. That part of smoking is much harder for me to give up than the nicotine – just the physical action of smoking, which has become a deeply ingrained habit that’s VERY difficult to break. That’s why I never found patches or gum particularly effective as a stop-smoking solution, because it provided the nicotine but not the physical

And if I want to try quitting, I can step down the nicotine level, or even just go cold turkey and get the no-nicotine cartomizers, since I’d still have the habitual actions part of smoking available to me.

I also took a closer look at the cost comparison between NuvoCig and traditional cigarettes. The information is available on the NuvoCig website, but the basic gist is that if you’re paying $7 a pack for cigarettes (which is pretty standard here in Michigan), ten packs of cigarettes will cost you about $70. A five-pack of NuvoCig cartomizers, which is equivalent to ten packs of cigarettes, sells for $19.99. (And the more cartomizers you buy at a time, the lower the price goes, up to 25% off if you buy five or more). So after the initial start-up costs (buying the batteries, chargers, carrying cases, etc.), you’re looking at paying just a third of the price!

to get a loved one to make the switch, NuvoCig sells what they call the Silver Single. The Silver Single ($14.99) is the standard rechargeable NuvoCig battery (just like the ones I received) with a single cartomizer. You (or your loved one) can try it out for a day or two (one cartomizer is equivalent to about two packs of cigarettes), and if you like it, then you can go back and buy a charger so you can keep using it.

I will definitely be continuing to use my NuvoCig. I prefer the standard battery with the smaller hit (the one that’s similar in size to a regular cigarette), but my husband likes the ultimate battery (with a bigger hit and a larger size, closer to a cigar than a cigarette), so that works out perfectly for us. I don’t know if I’ll ever completely give up traditional cigarettes, but I’d be satisfied if I could cut it down to one or two a day and then use my NuvoCig the rest of the time.
