Catechism of the Catholic Church on the SACRAMENT

OF CONFIRMATION ARTICLE 2

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

V. THE MINISTER OF CONFIRMATION 1312 The original minister of Confirmation is the bishop. In the East, ordinarily the priest who baptizes also immediately confers Confirmation in one and the same celebration. But he does so with sacred chrism consecrated by the patriarch or the bishop, thus expressing the apostolic unity of the Church whose bonds are strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation. In the Latin Church, the same disci-

pline applies to the Baptism of adults or to the reception into full communion with the Church of a per-son baptized in anoth-er Christian communi-ty that does not have valid Confirmation. 1313 In the Latin Rite, the ordinary minister of Confirmation is the bishop. If the need arises, the bishop may grant the faculty of administering Con-

firmation to priests, although it is fitting that he confer it himself, mindful that the celebration of Confirma-tion has been temporally separated from Baptism for this reason. Bishops are the successors of the apos-tles. They have received the fullness of the sacra-ment of Holy Orders. The administration of this sac-rament by them demonstrates clearly that its effect is to unite those who receive it more closely to the Church, to her apostolic origins, and to her mission of bearing witness to Christ. 1314 If a Christian is in danger of death, any priest can give him Confirmation. Indeed the Church de-sires that none of her children, even the youngest, should depart this world without having been per-fected by the Holy Spirit with the gift of Christ's full-ness.

WHAT IS NOVENA? Novena is a nine-day period of devotional

prayer that uses set formulas of petition. Catholics pray novenas to gain particular favours from the divine, especially when they are pressing and ur-gent needs. Novenas may be made publicly or pri-vately.

Christian novenas were modeled on the apostles’ nine days of fervent prayer and waiting in an upper room after the surprising resurrection and ascension of Jesus of Nazareth. This nine-day period stretched from the feast of Ascension, until Pente-cost Sunday. The Scriptures report that the close followers of the risen Lord prayed and stayed to-gether, waiting for the gift of the Spirit whom Jesus had promised to send.

ST FRANCIS SCC PRAISED TO THE SKIES

The Parish Priest Fr Krzysztof Mroz on Saturday October 1, 2016 eulogized St Francis SCC members for their hard work and co-operation in their Commu-nity. Fr Mroz was speaking during St Francis Small Christian Community Mass held at Mr and Mrs Tem-bo’s residence at 14.00hrs. The Parish Priest praised the community for being prompt in paying Church obligations such as Seminarian Fund, Mtulo, among others. He said the Community was one of the four SCCs at the parish that had fully paid Semi-narian Fund for 2016. The Parish Priest also com-mended the members for the improved Mtulo pay-ments made at the parish. Fr Mroz appealed to other SCCs at the parish to emulate St Francis SCC by paying Church debt expeditiously before the year 2016 came to a close. On community Mass, Fr Mroz applauded St Francis SCC for being the only com-munity at the parish that had arranged to hold two community Masses every year. When quizzed by this reporter as to why the community holds two Masses in a year, Community Executive members explicitly explained that one Mass was for Spiritual growth while the one held in October was for their Patron Saint, St Francis of Assisi. Fr Mroz also informed the gathering that St Francis SCC was the first SCC at the parish to form English Choir. A jovial looking Parish Priest thanked the community choir members for their commitments. He informed the worshippers that he usually sees St Francis SCC Choir members rehearsing at the Church during week days. Fr Mroz urged members of St Francis SCC to take a leaf from their Patron Saint, St Fran-cis of Assisi who was a peace maker.

The Parish Priest applauded St Bakhita SCC members (Twin SCC) for their support. He also thanked Parish Council Executive members led by

Brig Gen Harrison Phiri (Rtd) and other SCC leader-ship for their presence at the Mass. Fr Mroz encour-aged Sts Francis, Augustine and Paul SCCs to be attending weekly Mass regularly due to their proximity to the Church. He said the three SCCs were near the Church, hence the need for them to be present during such Masses.

And presenting a SCC report to the congregants, the community through Mr Humphrey Lumbwe ap-pealed to all St Francis SCC members, especially those without Lay Groups/Movements to join any of them at the parish. On Divine Mercy Pilgrimage, the community appreciated the initiative and wished it could continue and stay forever for it had benefited a number of families. Others that attended the Com-munity Mass were members from Sts Joseph SCC, Lucia SCC, Martin SCC, Mother Teresa, among others. The Mass was made lively by the ever-green St Bakhita SCC Choir.

—————————————————————————————————

On Saturday September 24, 2016 St Michael SCC held its community Mass at Mr and Mrs Zyambo Daka at 14.00hrs, where Fr Mabvuto presided over the proceedings. The Assistant Parish Priest in-formed the gathering that braved the afternoon scorching heat that St Michael Archangel was im-portant in Zambia because he is the Patron Saint for the country. He also explained the roles of Sts Archangels Raphael and Gabriel who shared the Feast day with St Michael. Fr Mabvuto thanked St Joseph SCC (Twin SCC) and other SCCs that sup-ported St Michael SCC to continue supporting one another. Others that attended the event were Sts Bakhita, Monica, and St Lucia SCCs.

And presenting a community report to the congre-gants, Mr John Mbewe, the SCC Vice Chairperson appealed to members of his community without Lay groups/movements to join one of their choices at the parish.

All in all, it has been observed that SCCs at the parish do not support one another during community Mass year in, year out despite frantic efforts made in publishing such events in the Parish Newsletter or through announcements. Our priests have time and again reminded SCCs to support one another in such occasions, but to no avail, as more and more SCCs have opted to shun such invitations. However, there is an adage which says “One cannot force a horse to drink water.”
