Preparation seminar How Europe seizes the opportunities offered by MOOCs

• MOOCs are an important driver for change.

• Its impact has helped institutions, governments and societies more

aware of the possibilities of open and online education.

• Evidence suggests that MOOCs are not reaching those more in need

for accessing HE.

• There’s the danger the richest HE institutions will dominate.

• MOOCs however remain relatively poorly defined.

• Open education should align with European values and support social

mobility.

• A collective European response and a strong support from the EC and

governments is needed.

• Universities need to strengthen their collaboration.

Biases in the surveys

• Every institution can decide by itself if it will provide MOOCs or not.

• The institutions define themselves what MOOCs are.

• The US surveys (US 2013 and US 2014) are biased to the large

institutions

• The EAU study is biased in favor of institutions involved in e-

learning.

• The EU-2014 study (EADTU/HOME) is biased to those institutions

interested in MOOCs.

Some results of HOME MOOC survey

• European institutions are more involved in MOOCs than the US

• The number of European institutions involved with MOOCs is increasing

• MOOCs are perceived in Europe as a sustainable format of course

provision.

• In Europe the institutions are increasingly developing a positive attitude

to MOOCs and have positive experiences of their added values .

• Most dominant objective in all studies is to increase institutional visibility

and using MOOCs for reputation reasons.

• In the US MOOCs are perceived by institutions as basically useful for

student recruitment, while in Europe the aim is to reach new students

and create flexible learning opportunities.
