home energy score
DESCRIPTION
There's a lot of talk about "energy-efficiency" and "green-homes," but how do you really know about a home's energy profile? What if there is an easy to understand tool that shows you exactly where a home is losing energy (money) but more importantly, helps you to figure out what you can do to fix it? Don't miss our Home Energy Score webinar, limited seats available. The Home Energy Score is the Department of Energy's new energy efficiency tool and US Inspect is the nation's single largest partner to the DOE. Our resident expert and Field Manager Tim Tucker knows all about the Home Energy Score. Thursday - April 24, 3:00 PM EST What is the Department of Energy's Home Energy Score? How can a homebuyer or homeowner use the report to save energy? Is the HES mandated in your state? Will it be? What are the benefits to agents, buyers, and sellers? Does the HES affect your MLS system?TRANSCRIPT

What is a Home Energy Score
• The Home Energy Score allows homeowners to compare the energy performance of their homes to other homes nationwide.
• The Home Energy Score is similar to a vehicle's mile-‐per-‐gallon rating.
• Low cost service • Takes about 15-‐20 minutes if in concert with other assessment (Home Inspection) • Approximately 1 hour if stand-‐alone • Not intended to replace a full energy audit or diagnostics • At this time only Single Family Dwelling’s can be scored.

Home Energy Score
• The process starts with a Home Energy Score Qualified Assessor
• The Home Energy Score Qualified Assessor collects information about the homes characteristics (40 specific pieces) during a brief home walk-‐through.
• Information is inputted into the Energy Modeling Software developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The software then converts the estimated energy use into a Score, based on a 10-‐point scale.

Concerns or Opportunities
NAR Participates in DOE Home Energy Score Conference • Labeling can stigmatize older properties that are not as energy efficient as newer buildings.
• REALTORS® who participated in the conference made the observation that consumers were already requesting and obtaining this kind of information through market-‐based mechanisms and made the case that real estate markets are responding to consumer demand for this data.
