Hunter Jones Hosts ‘Shutout Hunger’ Public Skate in Hometown

As the first half of the 2018-19 OHL season came to a close last week, members of the Petes headed to their respective hometowns to join their family and friends for the holidays.

For netminder Hunter Jones, going back to his hometown of Brantford meant the opportunity to give back to the community that he grew up in. Along with other hockey-playing friends John Parker-Jones, Holden Wale (Soo Greyhounds), Emily Rickwood (NCAA – University of New Hampshire), and

Tonight’s game is the third of four meetings between the Petes and Steelheads this season, and the second of three games in nine days between the Eastern Conference opponents.

Petes Captain Zach Gallant makes his return to the lineup after missing 28 games due to an injury sustained on October 11.

14 Steelheads had points in Mississauga’s 9-5 take down of the Windsor Spitfires on New Year’s Eve including Alan Lyszczarczyk, who had 2 goals against the Petes on Saturday.

C.J. Clarke, who was traded from the Flint Firebirds on Monday, will make his Steelheads debut. The former Pete has 6 goals, 5 assists, and 11 points in 38 games this season.

Goaltenders Hunter Jones and Jacob Ingham are 1-2 in saves this season with 973 and 880, respectively.

Nicole Kelly (PWHL – Etobicoke Junior Dolphins), Jones hosted a public skate aptly named ‘Shutout Hunger’.

“I really wanted to help out our community in Brantford this year, and I thought since we do a lot in Peterborough, I could host my own community event in my hometown,” commented Jones.

With support from sponsors, Jones and friends were able to provide two hours of public skating to the Brantford community on Saturday, December 22. In return, they asked participants to bring a non-perishable food item that would be donated to the Brantford Food Bank.

Jones estimates that nearly 200 people took part in the skate. They collected 340 pounds of food and raised over $670 in cash that was donated to the Brantford Food Bank.

“The food drive was perfect for this time of year and I’m so happy for all the support we got from the community,” added Jones.

tye austin gives thegift of goaltending

What started out as an idea in early December came to fruition this week for Tye Austin and local minor hockey goalie Sarah.

Austin, a 16 year old rookie netminder for the Petes, was looking for a way to give back to someone in the community that has already given him so much in his first OHL season.

“I’m really enjoying getting to play hockey in Peterborough,” he explained. “I can tell how much this city loves their team, so I wanted to give back in some way.”

Tye came up with a few ideas of how he could make a difference this holiday season, and settled on sending a local minor hockey goalie to Canadian Hockey Enterprise’s Christmas goalie camp.

After connecting with CHE, Tye put a plan in place to surprise Sarah, a goalie for the Atom House League Ennismore Eagles.

After enjoying Christmas with her family, Sarah attended CHE’s camp to keep working on her goaltending skills.

“It was great getting to meet Sarah and her family,” Tye quipped. “Seeing the photos of her having fun and working hard at camp was very rewarding and very humbling.”

Tye continued, “I loved going to camp as a young goalie and still coach in camps, so it was a great feeling to be able to give Sarah the opportunity to get the same experience.”
