For the past decade, Inlander Magazine readers have voted YMCA Camp Reed as the “Best Summer Camp.” It is for good reason, since for more than a century, Camp Reed had been enriching the lives of thousands of Spokane children.

The camp began in 1915 when Deer Park residents Frank and Emma Reed donated 15 acres of land. Today, the camp has expanded to almost 600 acres in a lovely wilderness setting surrounding Fan Lake.

“I think what makes our camp really special is its relationship with the community,” says camp executive director, Lisa Vogt. Lisa, who attended Camp Reed as a child and served as both a volunteer counselor and as a paid camp staffer, had a successful career as a lawyer before deciding to put her skills to use as director.

Today, she manages the business end of the camp year-round and lives at the camp for about 12 weeks during the summer.

“The most valuable part of our work is not just working with campers but in helping teach young people leadership skills,” Lisa says. She adds that camp staffers have “an incredible opportunity to share what is really important” with campers, including conflict resolution, good social behavior and care of the environment.

Through the generous donations of community members and businesses, such as PayneWest, Lisa says Camp Reed is able to serve children from low-income families. “Words cannot express how much camp means to these children,” she says. “They have never received something so meaningful before and they just can’t believe it.”

A Century Of Enriching Young Lives

It’s that time of year for celebrations - Graduations, weddings, moving into your new dream home!

A major life event may change your insurance requirements. Is it time to check in with your PayneWest advisor? An insurance review can help ensure that you have the coverage you need to safeguard the future of those who count on you.

Providing our clients with superior service is our mission and we thank you for choosing us to assist you with your insurance needs.

“It is a common occurrence for people who bought their flooring from us 40 years ago to send their kids in to buy floors from us now,” says Mark Caruso. Along with his father, Bill, Mark runs Caruso’s Floors, the business his grandfather, Phil, started in Spokane in 1933.

As a third generation member of the family business, Mark says he grew up working at the store and that he joined the business full-time after high school. “My Dad and I work very well together,” he explains, adding that each of them “wear many hats.” The business employs nine people and many crews providing sales, installation and service for all types of flooring, including linoleum, tile, porcelain, granite, hardwood, area rugs and carpeting.

“We are a full-service shop,” Mark explains. “Our prices are competitive with the big box stores but

we also offer in-house design service and quality installation. By the time many of our customers have come to us, they are burned out (by all the decisions of a new construction or a remodel). We want to smooth out the process for them and to offer them a fun experience.”

The Caruso family enjoys giving back to the community it serves. For example, it donates materials to Habitat for Humanity and supports Sacred Heart’s Children’s Hospital. Caruso’s has been with PayneWest for about 12 years. Mark says the store switched to PayneWest for its expertise in bonding insurance and has stayed because of the great service.

Keeping A Family Afloat

Brigette Hunter was just 27, and a new mother, when she was widowed. Her husband Matt, was killed in a car accident. Brigette had to borrow money from her parents to pay for Matt’s funeral, as he had no life insurance.

Six months later, friends introduced Brigette to Anthony. She wasn’t looking for a relationship, but Anthony was persistent. They married and soon opened their own electrical business. With the business and three children to support, the couple bought small life insurance policies. An insurance professional who met with them several years later, determined that they needed considerably more life insurance.

A year later, Anthony found a bump on his chin that didn’t go away. Anthony learned it was melanoma and it soon spread to his lungs, brain and bones.

Still wanting to provide for his family, Anthony invoked a provision of his life insurance policy that allowed him to access a portion of the death benefit, due to his terminal diagnosis. With that money, the Hunters were able to buy a nicer home while he was still alive. He was able to spend a month in the house before he died at 34.

The remaining money from Anthony’s policies helped Brigette pay off medical bills and meet her household expenses. It also kept the business afloat. “Without the money I would have had to close the business,” she says.
