Henshaws News and Updates

Henshaws Liverpool stepping back in time…Thirty two of Henshaws trepid explorers went back in time to visit Blists Hill Victorian Town in Ironbridge, in May 2016. It was a truly memorable day out at this recreated Victorian Town. The group got to experience what life was like over 100 years ago through the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the recreated Victorian Town. The Victorian characters gave all our service users an insight into Victorian life as they went about their daily lives there. They also got to sample traditionally cooked fish and chips and delicious bread from the bakery, finishing off with a range of ‘old favorites’ in the sweetshop. Not forgetting all the fun of the Victorian fairground and a journey around the town on a horse and cart and much, much more. Quotes from service users:“Amazing! I loved it. A great day out” - Phil“Everything was great, loved the old fashioned shops and the staff were great” - Ethel“Enjoyed the walk around and the company” - Irene

Henshaws visit to Palm House, Sefton ParkHenshaws Liverpool also enjoyed an afternoon with the Savoy Jazzmen in the beautiful Palm House in Sefton Park, back in June 2016. The heat was definitely rising that day, along with the music of the roaring 20s. The drinks were flowing and so were the swaying of the parasols during the Mardi Gras Parade. Quotes from service users:“The band was boss!”“The Palm house was amazing. I loved the heat. The music was great and they sang me Happy Birthday which really made it special” - Jan“Toe tapping, fabulous and it was a great” - Jon

News, Services and Useful numbersNewsNHS England - Milestone in the “Need it to Read it” Campaign, through RNIBLater this month, NHS England’s Accessible Information Standard comes into full force. It mandates that everyone providing an NHS or adult social care service must provide information in a format that their patients can read. The Standard will deliver a step change in patient communication across the NHS, enabling people with sight loss to manage their health with the same level of privacy and independence that sighted people may take for granted.Importantly, the Standard reinforces the existing requirement, under the Equality Act 2010 for health and social care staff to provide information their patients can read.Since April, providers should have been asking their patients about their communication needs and recording these preferences. From 31 July, providers have to send you information in a format you can read. With your permission, they must also share your communication

needs so you don’t have to request alternative formats across different services. Unfortunately, we’ve found that some GP practices still don’t know about the Standard. RNIB have created two ways to help you make sure your GP practice is in the know:Option 1 – download and complete the DIY GP notification template at: www.rnib.org.uk/needittoreaditOption 2 – phone RNIB’s helpline on 0303 123 9999 for more information and to receive a hard copy of the GP notification template.

Are you involved in inspecting health services in your area?As part of RNIB’s “Need it to Read it” campaign, they want to involve people who inspect local health services so that everyone who needs information in an alternative format receives it. Is this you? Get in touch with RNIB on 020 7391 2123 or at [email protected]

Are you interested in culture??We are looking to start a new group for those people who are interested in getting out and about and visiting local places of interest within Liverpool. So if this is your thing, please get in touch, so we can start a new group up.

ServicesWhere to get help with your tax Many people find tax matters confusing, but there are ways of getting help. RNIB has a team who support people with sight loss with income tax issues. The service, supported by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), provides information about tax allowances such as the Blind Person's Allowance and the Marriage Allowance, which can reduce your tax bill. RNIB can help you with queries related to income tax, tax-free savings, VAT-free products and tax credits. The team can also contact HMRC to help with resolving problems and to arrange support with completing tax forms and self-assessment tax returns. What is the Blind Person’s Allowance? People registered as blind or severely sight impaired can claim the Blind Person’s Allowance. The allowance is

22

Page 23: Home - Henshaws€¦  · Web viewIt’s been a busy summer here at Henshaws and we have welcomed lots of new staff members to the Community Services Team since the last edition

£2,290. This can reduce tax by £458 this year. You can backdate the allowance to the previous 4 years. You can also transfer the allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner. What is the Marriage Allowance? The Government introduced the Marriage Allowance tax-break in 2015. It lets you and your partner share part of your tax-free Personal Allowance to help lower your overall tax bill. In 2016/17 you can transfer £1,100 of your Personal Allowance to your partner which will save up to £220 in tax. To apply for the Marriage Allowance you need to be married or in a civil partnership. Both partners need to be born on or after 6 April 1935. One partner needs to be a non-taxpayer, and the other partner has to be a basic rate taxpayer.RNIB want to make sure anyone who is eligible receives these tax allowances and the team can help you with claiming them. In most cases it can be done easily over the phone, with no forms to complete. How to contact RNIB’s Tax Advice teamFor help and information on income tax and HMRC-related issues you can call RNIB on 0345 330 4897 or 0151 702 5721 or email: [email protected]. You can find more information online, go to www.rnib.org.uk/tax

Please help us to spread the wordOnce you have read or listened to our newsletter, please pass it on to a friend or family member, or you could enquire at your local community centre, doctor’s surgery, church or library to see if you could leave it there for others to read or listen to. We also have leaflets and posters, explaining who we are and what we do – maybe you could ask about leaving some of these as well as the newsletter; you can get a supply of these by calling us on 0161 872 1234.Remember, the more people know about us and support us, the more support we can offer visually impaired people, so please do all you can to help us get the word out.
