(StatePoint) - It’s time for raking leaves, pruning shrubbery, and other seasonal fall lawn care tasks. Never has the old adage “work smarter, not harder” been more apt than when tackling yard work and preparing lawns for next sea-son. “After a long summer mowing lawns, many people lose enthusiasm for lawn care when fall hits,” says Bob Monahan, creator of the EZ Lawn & Garden product line, and a former frustrated leaf-raker looking for cost-effective ways to make yard work easier. “There are several tips to streamline yard work -- from knowing the best time to pull weeds to using the right equipment to make tasks simpler,” he says. Here are some smart ways to handle fall lawn care:

Be Body Smart Good posture can prevent backaches when raking leaves. Keep your head up and back straight. Relieve back pressure by raking using the “scissors” stance: whereby you place one foot forward and the other back, reversing position after several minutes.

When mowing, move the mower with your body weight as much as possible, rather than relying on your arms and back. And use ergonomically designed rakes, shears and pruners that require less hand strength than traditional ones.

Rake and Haul Easily Put away the loud, smelly leaf blower. Noth-ing is worse than raking leaves on a windy day, only to have them blown around.

Try An Easier Approach Rake leaves onto a tarpaulin and drag it away. One innovative tarp solution is the EZ Leaf Hauler, which has been dubbed the “gi-ant dustpan for leaves.” It’s a modified tarp with sides that holds up to five wheelbar-rows of yard debris. Stakes are attached and can be pressed into the ground to hold it in place on windy days. Approved by the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, it uses tent construction technology to form sides and a back, and has reinforced pockets and stitched handles for easy hauling and dump-ing. And if you already have a tarp, you can

easily clip handles to it to make it easier to haul when full of leaves. For example, the EZ Tarp Tugger is a low-cost option that combines handles with stakes, so you can keep your tarp in place and then pull it away when it is full of debris to bag or compost. Remember, dragging leaves away is easier on your back and environmentally friendly.

Weed Wisely Weeding can be made less painful if you adhere to the old gardener’s trick of weeding after it rains. When earth is dry, it’s harder to pull out the whole weed without break-ing off the top. After rainfall, the ground is damp, making it easier to pluck out entire weeds. This way, weeds can easily be added to leaves and other debris that need to be hauled away. More information on innovative tools for raking, hauling and bagging yard debris can be found at www.ezlawnandgarden.com.Remember, fall is your last chance to put your lawn in order before next season’s warm weather.

(ARA) - When entertaining during the holiday season, time is of the essence. Be-tween cleaning, shopping, decorating and mingling with friends and family, there’s hardly enough time to cook let alone prepare an elaborate seven course meal. However, the lack of time doesn’t mean your food or your guests have to suffer. By combining classic dishes with unique ingredients, you can enhance the flavor of your recipes without having to spend the entire evening in the kitchen.”

Instead of preparing an over-the-top feast, try opting for simple and satisfying fare with a subtle modern twist to wow your guests. Often, it’s just that extra ingredient that can really tie together your favorite appetizers, entrees and desserts. Jes-sica Segarra, of The Novice Chef food blog, offers three simple tips to create stand out dishes using her favorite

better-for-you pretzel crack-ers to rethink your holiday

recipes.

• While it’s easy to get caught up in the moment, don’t let the holidays side-track your guests from eat-ing healthy. Instead, make wholesome, lighter options the life of the party by add-ing unexpected ingredients to otherwise bland dish-es. Serve protein packed, homemade sweet potato hummus with veggies and flat-baked Pretzel Crisps®, the perfect combination of sweet and savory flavors for fall and winter enter-taining. Not only will the hummus keep your guests satisfied, it can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

• Sweet-and-savory never fails. Look for recipes that combine both elements to add a well-balance boost of

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:

1 pound pork loin, sliced into 1 1/2-inch rounds1/4 cup all-purpose flour2 large eggs, whisked3 cups Everything Pretzel Crisps, crushed4 tablespoons unsalted butter

For the gravy:

4 tablespoons unsalted butter3 tablespoons all-purpose flour3 tablespoons maple syrup1 cup whole milk

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 F. Line a baking dish with foil and spray with non-stick spray. Set aside. Place flour in a shallow bowl. Place eggs in a separate shallow bowl. Spread crushed Pretzel Crisps on a rimmed plate.Working with one pork medallion at a time, coat pork in flour, dip into eggs and then press into pretzels. Repeat process until all pork medallions have been coated. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add four to five pork medallions at a time, cook-ing until lightly browned, about 2 minutes on each side. Transfer browned pork medallions to prepared bak-ing dish. Repeat process until all pork medallions have been browned. Place pork medallions in the oven and bake until cooked through, or until internal temperature reach-es 140 F, about 8 minutes. Let chops rest for 5 minutes after baking. While pork is in the oven, melt butter over medium-high heat in the skillet used to cook the pork. Whisk in flour, scrapping the edges to include any of the browned pork bits in the pan. Stir continually with a wire whisk until the flour has thickened and started to brown, about 3 minutes. Pour in maple syrup and 1/2 cup of milk, continually whisking. After about 30 seconds, gravy should start to thicken again. Add remaining 1/2 cup of milk and whisk until combined. Remove gravy from heat and serve drizzled on top of pork medallions.

This holds true for both desserts and en-trees. “Pretzels are my go-to ingredient for adding crunch and just the right amount of salty goodness to my sweeter dishes,” says Segarra. “I’ve found Pretzel Crisps offer the most versatility when it comes to flavor and use. They can be easily paired with my favorite holiday desserts, including beau-tifully layered trifles.”

• Select dishes that can be prepared ahead of time. Entertaining is no fun if you’re confined to the kitchen while your meal cooks. Choosing a baked entree like pork medal-lions or chicken breasts that can be prepped be-fore your guests arrive can help to free you up to socialize. Swap out bread crumbs for thin pretzel crackers and coat prior to your guests arrival.

Holiday gatherings are supposed to be fun for everyone, including the hosts. By adopting some simple time-saving secrets to make your food shine, both you and your food can be the life of the party. Celebrate the holidays with Pretzel Crisps and these seasonally inspired recipes at your next gathering.

The weather these days seems to be more volatile than ever -- swinging from record-setting heat waves to deep freezes, seemingly from one day to the next. With the weather more varied and unpredictable, homeowners nationwide have learned lessons from the past year and are tak-ing steps to ensure their houses can efficiently withstand whatever Moth-er Nature dishes out. It’s all about keeping homes sealed tightly, so water and wind can’t leak in and tempered air doesn’t leak out -- causing heating and cooling bills to rise.

Beware of Foundation Cracks

Water is the enemy of your home’s foundation. A change in moisture con-tent of the soil around your home allows water to put pressure on the foun-dation, causing cracks and leaks. Dry weather can cause the soil to shrink, while wet periods can cause it to soften. Poor drainage from your roof or improper ground slope around your home can funnel water against the foundation. Make sure gutters are clean and that downspouts extend away from your home. Check that the soil, grass or pavement prop-erly slopes away from your foundation.

Insulate Effectively Upgrading a home’s in-sulation is an effective, easy way to increase en-ergy efficiency while de-creasing heating costs. The attic is a great start, but to achieve maximum efficiencies, don’t overlook areas such as basements and rim joists. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates ho-meowners could save an average of at least $250 yearly in heating costs by insulating basement walls. And by insulating crawl spaces and rim joists, the

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates homeowners can save up to 20 percent on energy bills. Opting for stone wool insulation, which is made from a combination of natural basalt rock and recycled slag, may provide greater benefits than traditional fiberglass insulation. One such thermal insulation is Roxul ComfortBatt, a fire resistant, water repellant and sound absorbent insu-lation that is well-suited for use in exterior walls, attics, crawlspaces and basements. It also has a unique fiber composition and density that pro-vides for an optimal fit between studs, joists, around ductwork, electrical boxes and plumbing. As another con-sideration for insulating, Roxul also offers Safe‘n’Sound, another stone wool insulation product well-suited for soundproofing interior walls and ceilings between rooms. Its unique stone wool composition reduces

sound transmissions by trapping sound waves and vibrations. Before undertaking a home insula-tion project, do-it-yourselfers can visit www.diywithroxul.com, to view free “how-to” videos detailing different in-sulation projects.

Inspect Your Roof Nothing can ruin a home faster than a leaky roof. Once yearly, check for signs of damage, such as sagging, ag-ing, cracking, curling, tears or missing shingles. Pay particular attention to areas obscured by shade or vegeta-tion. Replace shingles that are lifting up or that have rot or heavy moss. Also inspect gutters, vents, overhangs and flashing. Repairs should be made as soon as you see a small problem, be-fore it becomes a larger one.Don’t attempt to climb a roof that is steeply sloped. Instead, turn to a pro-fessional roofer or home inspector.

deCoraTing wiTH area rUgs- What you need to know to decorate like a Pro -

From classic Persian to striking contempo-rary designs, nothing enhances the beauty and individuality of a home like hand-woven area rugs. These ever-popular floor coverings come in a wide array of styles, sizes, and prices to fit virtually every décor and every budget. And one of the prime sources of high quality handcrafted area rugs is India.

Here are some terrific tips that will help you incorporate hand-woven area rugs into your decorating plans courtesy of the Oriental Rug Importers Association (ORIA) and the CEPC, a nonprofit association of India’s leading area rug manufacturers.

Start from the Rug UpRugs are often the last things people buy

for their rooms. However, area rugs should really be the “foundation” of your design plan because they often become the focal point of the space. Selecting the rugs first will also help you to plan the overall color scheme and create a mood for the room.

Size MattersThe actual room size and your specific

decorating scheme are important consider-

ations when deciding on the size of the rug. For example, a dining room rug should be large enough to cover the table area and the chairs when pulled back. A bedroom looks best with one large area rug that extends from the sides and front of the bed, or two smaller rugs, one on each side of the bed. If you have a small room, leave as much of a border of flooring around the rugs to make the room appear larger.

Two’s Company and Three’s Not a CrowdYou can make an extra large living room

and/or family room more inviting and inti-mate by using two or more area rugs to cre-ate separate “conversation” and TV areas, a “music” area, or a “hobby” area, etc.

On The Surface Of ThingsArea rugs look terrific on finished wood floor-

ing, ceramic and other types of natural tile, and many other surfaces. However, if you are renting a furnished home or apartment whose main rooms are covered with broadloom, there’s no rule against placing area rugs over the carpeting, provided that the rug colors and patterns work well with those of the carpet.

Mix It UpThere’s no decorating rule that says you

shouldn’t mix area rug styles within a home or even within the same room. If space per-mits, don’t worry about placing a transitional or contemporary design rug in a room with the traditional Persian carpet you inherited. Go ahead and mix ‘em up. The best designs are those that appeal to you.

Order in the HouseThere is no such thing as a problem space.

Thanks to innovations in rug weaving tech-niques, hand-knotted area rugs can be made-to-order in any size, shape, design and color combination. So, if you have an unusual or oversized space, or other special decorating requirement, a local floor-covering retailer can order a rug custom-made for your par-ticular needs.

Why You Should Hire

A Professional PainterTime · Money · Safety · Quality

TimeA professional painting contractor saves time. Any business or homeowner who has ever started a simple do-it-yourself paint-ing project understands the challenges of getting the job done on time. There are always extra trips to the paint store for supplies. It is difficult to accurately esti-mate the time required to properly prepare the project area. And, there is always the unanticipated time required for touch-ups and repair. Hire a professional painting contractor, then schedule more important – and more fun – things to do with your valuable time.

moneyA professional painting contractor saves money. Every do-it-yourself project ends up costing more than the original budget. Whether it's underestimating total paint needs, adding in the cost of clean-up, or all the other unanticipated expenses that come up, don't put the additional strain on your wallet. Hire a professional painting contractor that knows the right product and has the right tools to complete the job on time.

SafeTyA professional painting contractor knows safety. Every painting project requires at-tention to safety. There are common haz-ards on every paint project site that could cause injury and job-time losses, and may even affect your income. Most insurance requires a deductible, so any accident will increase the cost of the project. Hire a professional painting contractor who is trained on the most up-to-date safety rules to limit the possibility of accidents and reduce your exposure. Why put your personal safety at risk?

QualiTyA professional painting contractor deliv-ers quality. The choices today are more complicated than just oil or latex. Most do-it-yourselfers don't have the industry knowledge to know what works, how to use it, or have the right tools for the job. De-tails such as surface prep, paint applica-tion and a material's long-term durability often get overlooked. The use of high qual-ity products is as important as excellence in paint application. Hire a professional painting contractor who is educated on all of the different aspects of any paint-ing project helps eliminate surprises and ensures you have a finished product you can be proud of.
