    What does the research support?

Reading has the single greatest impact on

    student achievement.

Students often sacrice time for authenticreading in order to complete their homework.

    Unstructured, imaginative, child-centered

play and physical activity enhance studentperformance and lead to better behavioral

    choices.

The brain develops in childhood throughactive play and exercise.

There is no conclusive evidence that

    homework increases standardized test scores

    or improves academic achievement in

    Elementary School.

    Home-School Connection

Each month parents will be invited intothe classrooms. This is an opportunity tosee what your child is learning in thedifferent subject areas and participate intheir learning.

We encourage students to have ampleplay time and engage in extended leisurereading after school.

Learning initiated in the class will havenatural extensions to home learning.Students may choose to explore a topicin more depth or expand it in a differentdirection. Teachers provide website linksand make suggestions to students towish to extend their learning.

We encourage students to follow theirpassions and explore their interests

which may include playing aninstrument, taking a language or artclass, learning dance, taking gymnastics, writing plays/skits, etc.

In our classroom learning communitieswe will celebrate school-home learningconnections. Children may be invited tobring items from home to contribute toschool projects.

When it benets an individual student, the teacher, parent and child may makea plan to address specic learning needsor to reinforce a concept or skill in a waythat provides the student with a choice ofhow to learn it.
