nationally therefore are experiencing busy times. If these are unavailable, try

again at a quieter time such as the afternoons.

Don’t forget there are toolkits on the school website to

support children with spelling

Reading Text Extract take from Max champion and the great race car robbery by Alexander McCall Smith

Video from the Year 2 team - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPlv-cAyoxk

This is the story of Max Champion and a great thing he did. Max is the hero of this tale because that is what he was, by nature and by deed – a hero. His full name was Max George Henry William Champion, but nobody needs that many names and so he was simply called Max. He lived with his mother, who was called Molly, and his grandfather, Augustus Monty

Champion, known as Gus.

Their home was at the end of a track on the edge of town. It was not a large house – in fact, it was rather small, only having three tiny rooms and an outside shack. This meant there was a bedroom for Molly, one for Max and a room that was used for everything else, including cooking and washing. Baths were taken in a tin tub behind a curtain; there was no hot tap, and so water was heated on the stove before being poured into the tub. It was all rather simple, but it was a comfortable tub and nobody complained. Grandfather Gus lived in a small shed in the back yard. Max had offered him his room and said that he

Page 6: Home Learning Pack - Amazon Web Services · only I could buy better tools,” said Gus. “Then I could fix some of the more modern cars too.” He sighed. It was not easy fixing

would take the shed instead, but Grandfather Gus simply shook his head and said he would not hear of it. “I slept in all sorts of

places in my younger days,” he said. “I’ve slept in tents and igloos. I’ve slept in haystacks and caves. I don’t mind a shed one little bit – in fact, I think this is one of the most comfort able places I’ve ever slept in my life!”

The Champion family did not have much money. Grandfather Gus had a small garage, where he had worked for as long as

anybody could remember. This garage was right next to the house, which meant he did not have far to walk to get to work. It was always surrounded by the old cars Gus fixed. These cars belonged to people who could not afford newer cars, and it was only through Gus’s efforts that they were kept going at all. “If only I could buy better tools,” said Gus. “Then I could fix some of the more modern cars too.” He sighed. It was not easy fixing these old cars, but it was his work and he did it as cheerfully as he could. The Champion family was not the sort of family who complained about anything – they made do with what they had.

School Hobbies Family = Pick two of these to put in your letter!

Dear children of the future,

I am writing to tell you about my experience of lockdown. I have been

very surprised because I never thought that I would live through

something like this. What a strange time!

First, I would like to tell you about school. On Friday 20th March, we

closed school. It was very sad because I didn’t know when I would see

the children again. I really enjoy speaking to all of the Bluebell children

on the phone.

Next, I will tell you about my hobbies. During lockdown, lots of people

have had much more spare time. I have been filling my spare time at

the weekend with running. I am very proud because I can now run 10k.

How exciting!

Finally, I will tell you about my family. Lockdown is hard because you

don’t get to see people from outside of your household. When I want

to see my Mum and Dad, I call them on Zoom. I am proud of my sister

because she works at the hospital.

How different is this from your life today?

Yours sincerely,

Miss Luckett

Topic Activities PSHCE With the importance of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement we are asking you to complete the task provided and take the opportunity to talk racial equality through with your child. Time Capsule Use the given pack to create a personal time capsule for you and your family. Maybe you could open it up in 5 years and see what life is like right now. This includes Tueday’s Writing Task. Pg 47 - 51 Spanish During the second half of the summer term children in Year 2 would normally receive a few taster Spanish lessons to prepare them for language learning in Year 3. For the next few weeks we will include some activities to introduce children to Spanish. If you don’t know any Spanish perhaps you could learn with them.

RE The Genr8 team have put together some activities based on stories from the bible. These would be used after the assembly they were due to do. http://request.org.uk/restart/2014/12/30/story-time-the-lost-coin-and-the-lost-sheep The title of this video is "The parable of the Lost Sheep – The farmer who cares for every sheep". The video can be found here https://youtu.be/EcVFN8ePKTk Pg 55

Outside Use toys or people to make different shadows – what different shapes can you make? What if you went back outside an hour later and stood in the same place, what’s happened? You don’t have to use paper – get chalks and draw around the shadows in bright colours!

PSHCE

This week we are asking you to take a moment to talk about equality and race. Some children may be aware of the protests or have heard the phrase #blacklivesmatter, other children will be going into these discussions with very little knowledge. In school, we hold regular circle times where children are given the opportunity to ask questions about matters such as these.

The link below will provide you with ideas for discussing this topic with your children. It also offers some other helpful resources such as books and films to help open the conversation and explain different view-points.

https://yoopies-cms.cdn.prismic.io/yoopies-cms/a79829ee-9d85-465c-9a08-270c4fd7e5b5_Parent%27s+guide+to+black+lives+matter.pdf We have also provided an activity for your child to participate in at home to further support their understanding of this important topic.

Racism as a race

Black people are often treated like the people in the race who start further back or have the blindfold or backpack on. They often are not treated fairly and have to deal with people judging them just based on the colour of their skin, this is called racism. More and more people are saying this is not right – everyone should be equal, no matter the colour of their skin. At Melbourn we believe everyone should be equal.

History has many accounts of people who lived under unfair and disadvantaged conditions, yet managed to achieve incredible things. In year 2 we have looked at Lewis Hamilton, Martin Luther King and Rose Parks.

Look up Katherine Johnson. She faced some major struggles in her lifetime. She managed to get the education she deserved yet was completely separated whilst doing her job. Ultimately there

wouldn’t have been a man on the moon without her. She is a phenomenal lady. But what do you think?

Imagine there are a group of people about to run a race. Before the start of the race, one person’s starting place is moved nearer the finishing line. Another person is moved much further away. One of the runners has a blindfold on, another one has a very heavy rucksack put on their back.

Is this a fair race? Why or why not? Who has the advantage?

Talk about

it.

it.

This week we are going to start learning the colours in Spanish.

Try listening to this YouTube song to hear the pronunciation and to help you remember the colours in Spanish. This song includes morado which is purple.

Instead of morrón they sing café and instead of naranja they sing anaranjado because this is an American video. In South America they speak Spanish but some of the words, like these two, are slightly different.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpLQSdu4V94

Game - To practise the colours you could stick some different colour pieces of paper around the room. Ask mum or dad to say one of the colours in Spanish and you have to go to that coloured piece of paper. Then you could test mum or dad and see if they can remember which colour is which. Try this Spanish colouring by numbers using the key at the bottom of the page. I would love to see your work. Send it to [email protected] if you would like me to mark your colouring or your number exercise.
