EDITOR’S NOTE

It takes two

From Adam and Eve to Antony and Cleopatra

to Batman and Robin, history and pop culture

repeatedly tell us that two heads are better

than one.

Who am I to argue?

The latest issue of Home Makeover magazine stands

as further testament to the fact that it takes two, as

they say, to make things go right. For instance, our

“Whole Home Makeover” this month (pages 8 to 14) showcases a stun-

ning Kerrisdale project completed by a terrifically talented twosome:

designer Céline Pitre and her architect husband, Alan Endall.

“Working together really made us appreciate each other’s skills that

much more,” Pitre reveals. “It can be easy to lose sight of that, espe-

cially when there are dishes and laundry to be done!”

In the first instalment of a new, ongoing feature we’ve named, “In

the Works” (pages 25 to 27), the bi-creative powers of a second pair –

designer Tom Bakker and builder Ken Gijssen – are exposed as they

take us through their latest condo collaboration step by step.

“It’s amazing what can happen when you put the right people

together,” Bakker comments. “Working with Ken inspires me because he

has a wealth of technical knowledge. If you combine that knowledge

early on in the design process, it makes for a more efficient project.”

One of my favourite dynamic duos – the Heathers – joined us in

the South Surrey sunshine to transform a sprawling backyard deck

into the perfect place for a patio party (pages 22 to 24). Heather Kleim

and Heather Stuart used double the design know-how to stage a

truly gorgeous outdoor space.

“By combining our creative forces, we are able to take traditional

home-staging projects to the next level,” comments Kleim on part-

nering with Stewart. “Working together, our creative forces multiply.”

Last, but certainly not least, we bring you the inside scoop on

a couple of “chicks” with some real design tricks up their sleeves.

Jennifer Scott and Rachel Harrison of A Good Chick to Know Design

dolled up a White Rock display suite that narrowly missed top prize in

B.C.’s Best Young Designer competition (pages 28 to 30).

On working together, the chicks say: “While we always have a

cohesive overall design in mind when creating a space, we often

have slightly different approaches on how to get there. Having each

other as a sounding board for ideas and utilizing two sets of eyes

when on the hunt for something allows us to achieve the most

thought-out end result for our clients. “Plus, it’s super fun shopping

with your best friend!”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

artWHOLE HOME MAKEOVER

What happens when you love your

neighbourhood, adore your lot,

but loathe your home? No need

to move, says Céline Pitre, who heads up

Vancouver’s Celine Interiors design firm.

Just fix it.

In 2009, Pitre had the chance to put her

theory into practice when close friends found

themselves in just such a jam. The couple – a

pair of busy, active professionals with no

children – had lived in their 2,700-square-foot

west side bungalow for several years. Now

the house, which felt cramped and gloomy,

was no longer working for them.

“The space just wasn’t large enough for

these parties that they really love to host,

with up to 100 guests at a time,” Pitre says

from the downtown office she shares with

her architect husband, Alan Endall of Endall

Elliot Associates. “They thought that the only

option was to move, but none of the proper-

ties they looked at felt quite right.”

Instead, over the Christmas holidays, she

and Endall pitched a whole-home overhaul

to their friends. Their proposal included a

functional, flowing floor plan that blurred

the line between indoors and out; wide,

open spaces with plenty of natural light;

and display walls to proudly showcase the

couple’s growing collection of fine art.

Main floor attractionWith the homeowners fortuitously sched-

uled for an extended overseas sabbatical,

Pitre, Endall and general contractor Davidson

Walker Construction got down to work. And

work they did.

“The first thing we did was tear the entire

roof right off and lift it,” says Pitre, empha-

sizing that this renovation was a major

undertaking, which took nearly two years to

complete. “The reason we did that was to

add a couple of feet in height to the main

floor, which was like an instant breath of

fresh air. It successfully got rid of the stuffi-

ness of the former space.”

Her next step – ringing clerestory win-

dows well above eye level, just shy of the

roofline – effectively provided even more

ventilation and natural sunlight without

comprising the owners’ desire for privacy,

as traditional windows would have done.

Eliminating several unnecessary rooms

from the main floor further “decluttered”

the space; the open area left in their wake

created the perfect blank canvas for a com-

bined cooking, living and dining space.

“It was still important to include some

separation between the kitchen and living

room so that cooking and plating could go on

unnoticed by guests,” says Pitre. “We came up

with a couple of great solutions to do that.”

Rather than building a traditional wall

between the two rooms, the designer clev-

erly installed a “part wall,” just shy of full

height, which perfectly defines the boundary

between the two spaces without shutting

one area off from the other. The functional

bonus to this architectural feature: it creates

extra vertical space that can be used to dis-

play the homeowners’ cherished paintings.

On the kitchen side, visitors are further prevented

from viewing any messy dinner prep or cleanup directly

thanks to a moss-coloured Martha Sturdy rectangular

resin vase set into the end of the CaeserStone island and

lit from below. This artistic touch – lovingly sourced from

the Gallery at Mattick’s Farm in Victoria – literally glows,

effectively stopping the eye from travelling beyond and

into the kitchen. This “smart” island also features a wine

trough embedded right into the stone; filled with ice, it’s

the perfect place to chill a bottle.

Sleek appliances, including a Preference stainless-steel

microwave and Epicure wall oven, both from Dacor, as

well as a Viking six-burner rangetop perfectly comple-

ment the floor-to-ceiling wenge cabinets – custom

designed by Céline Interiors – which thoughtfully include

a shallow space to house wine glasses.

The living room, too, is full of small, stunning touches

that are, at second glance, as functional as they are

esthetically pleasing. Take, for instance, the seeming lack

of television – an imposing appliance that, according to

Pitre, “can be a distraction, at best, or an eyesore, at worst”

in an open-concept space.

“We took one of the paintings from the collection – a

bright-red [Bratsa] Bonifacho piece – and hung it on

an invisible track so that it can be slid off to the side,”

she explains of her striking solution. “The TV is housed

behind that gorgeous piece of art – the perfect way to

keep it covered without eliminating it altogether.”

Other surprises: a smartly designed bar area that, besides

housing spirits and assorted glassware also provides ample

room to store various pieces of electronic equipment out

of sight – but not out of mind. Opposite the bar, a honed

and filled travertine wall in Mare Blu from Pacific Stone Tile

boasts not only a cozy wood-burning fireplace but also a

concrete, Solus Decor-built hearth-bench hybrid that runs

the length of the living room to create extra seating for

guests.

Pitre even went so far as to design some of the main

furnishings for the living room, including an earth-toned

couch complete with matching cushions that was skillfully

manufactured by Carmel Furniture Designs in Vancouver.

The most dramatic feature of the main floor, however,

might well be the absolutely seamless transition that

Pitre and Endall managed to create between indoors

and out at the back of the house. In pleasant weather, a

NanaWall can be folded completely out of sight, creating

a continual connection between the kitchen and deck.

Rex Abisko wood-look porcelain floor tiles make the

fusion between the inside of the house and the wood

deck final.

“Extending the interior space out was an important

requirement,” Endall explains. “Not only is it functional for

throwing outdoor dinner parties and such, we were also

trying to stretch the size of the house so that you could

WHOLE HOME MAKEOVER

really feel the depth of the lot. We didn’t want to add

an extra storey and build the house up too much; we

wanted to keep it low, private and subtle, yet spacious

and extremely livable.”

Bedroom down belowMain floor accomplished, it was time to descend the

sunken stairwell and transform the lower level of the

house – effectively the master suite – into a space that

was equally luxe and livable. This posed an exciting chal-

lenge for both architect and designer.

“You don’t normally think of a basement as a very nice

place to live,” Pitre admits. “They’re usually – in the Lower

Registered Interior Designers are trained to listen to and understand your

Selecting a qualified Interior Designer is one of the most significant decisions

you can make.

HOW TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL INTERIOR DESIGNER

www. IDIBC.org

REGISTERED INTERIOR DESIGN (RID) PRACTITIONERS SHARE THE BELIEF THAT DESIGN ENHANCES OUR ENVIRONMENTS AND MAKES A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO OUR LIVES.

Take time to interview interior designers and check their references. Each designer should

explain their design process, how they work, and what they charge for their services.

They should also ask you about your needs, timeline, and expectations. It’s important that both

parties feel comfortable with the relationship before a contract is signed and work begins.

For the list of local registered profession designers (RID’s), please go to our member directory

Mainland at least – somewhat dark and damp; not a very

nice place to spend a lot of time in.”

To eradicate any remnants of a “cave-like” basement, the

duo wisely opted to dig out terraces on either end of the

room. These allowed for the installation of floor-to-ceiling

windows, which fill the space with an abundance of light.

For further luminescence, a reflecting pool at one

side of the house coaxes fresh morning light deep into

the bedroom; on the other end, evergreens and native

plants create a natural, verdant shade. Inside, wool car-

peting from Colin Campbell adds an element of warmth

underfoot; a custom-built concrete fireplace completes

the room’s cozy ambiance.

(Digging the two terraces, incidentally, yielded

a “treasure” of sorts: an enormous granite boulder,

between 10 and 20 feet in diameter, that was subse-

quently chopped into pieces and deposited in the

backyard. Some of these rocks create a landscaped bar-

rier beside the steps leading down from the deck.)

The master bath includes all the comforts of a spa,

including a soaker tub, which, slightly smaller in size,

saves on space, allowing for a separate shower stall on

the other side of a frameless glass wall. Shimmering

one-inch bronze mosaic glass tiles from World Mosaic

add a final touch of iridescent opulence to the room. ∞

Stare worthyWhen it comes to the 2011 Audi S5, it’s OK to stare. Its

Brilliant Red body draws looks wherever this car goes,

while contoured curves and 19-inch alloy wheels create a

vortex effect, disabling admirers from turning away.

What makes the S5 even more attractive is its ability

to adapt to various road conditions. Equipped with

quattro all-wheel drive, this sports coupe (also offered

in convertible configuration) performs effortlessly on

smooth pavement and slippery surfaces alike.

Boasting a smooth-revving 4.2L FSI V8 engine,

onlookers may get but a fleeting glance of this beauty.

Whether harnessing power through a six-speed manual or

six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, the S5 acceler-

ates like silk: from zero to 100km/h in just 5.1 seconds.

DRIVEWAYS & DECKS

Homeowner Robbie Dickson adds beauty to his property with an amazing collection of

cars, including this custom-built Ferrari Formula 1 prototype racecar.

When Robbie Dickson decided to

move from the hustle and bustle

of the big city, he chose a loca-

tion that was quiet, scenic and spacious. His

beautiful residence, built just a few years ago,

is set against a backdrop that overlooks the

ocean and borders a lush grove of trees.

Adding beauty to the property is an

amazing collection of cars. Dickson says his

taste for luxury vehicles took hold when

he was six; amazingly, it’s still going strong.

And if his passion for all things automotive

isn’t made apparent in conversation, the

custom-built Ferrari Formula 1 prototype

racecar hanging in his garage will surely

convince you.

A desire to experience different vehicles,

from sports cars to SUVs to sedans, has

played a significant role in this car enthusi-

ast’s life – not to mention his appreciation

for good design. Over the years, how-

ever, one special roadster has found a

permanent place in his heart: a Lotus Elise

that he says makes him smile every time he

takes it for a spin.

Dickson graciously let Home Makeover

stage an “auto-focused” photo shoot in his

front driveway featuring six 2011 models that

combine exceptional performance with

inspiring design. We then popped around

back to stage a patio party on his incredible,

multi-level deck.

DRIVEWAYS & DECKS

Tour de forceWhether it’s a quick rip around the block or a cross-

country road trip, comfort and style prevail in the 2011

Harley-Davidson Street Glide. One of the American com-

pany’s most popular bikes, the Street Glide’s architecture

is a perfect blend of classic and modern.

Its signature bat-wing fairing with full instrumentation,

including a silver-faced speedometer and tachometer

and two-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, makes it

instantly recognizable as a Harley. Stainless-steel touring

handlebars and a sculpted and lowered seat further add

to its appeal.

At the essence of the Street Glide’s design: chrome. From

mufflers to low-profile fuel tank console, the metal features

heavily on this bike. But the main attraction may very well

be its available supped-up Twin Cam 103 engine. Engulfed

in black-powder coating with chrome rocker covers and

machined cooling fin tips, it looks and sounds divine.

Air apparentThere’s an unassuming grace about the 2011 Mercedes-

Benz E 350 Cabriolet. Head on, its grille showcases that

distinctive three-pointed star, while twin projection-

beam headlamps add to the front-end presence; the

unassuming rear is comprised of simple, comple-

mentary lines.

With a smooth-riding suspension and impeccable

steering, it’s hard not to fall in love with this car. Not to

mention the prowess of the 3.5L V6 engine, which pro-

duces 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

A new feature on the 2011 model is the Aircap wind

deflector, which keeps air flowing through the cabin at

bay. Airscarf – a head and neck heater mounted to the

front headrests – keeps passengers toasty on cool days.

And dropping the top has never been easier; it takes a

mere 20 seconds and can be done at speeds of up to 40

km/h. Open-air driving has never looked so good.

Major appealWith a commanding road presence, toned physique and

assertive styling, the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V sport sedan (also

available in coupe or sport wagon) exudes confidence.

From its unique grille, which was specifically outfitted

for the performance V model, to its aggressive front

fascia and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, this luxury

Adventurous typeDesigning a motorcycle that sati-

ates the needs of commuters

and off-road enthusiasts is tough.

But with its 2011 F800GS, BMW

Motorrad meets the challenge

head on.

This mid-sized adventure-

touring bike features a liquid-

cooled, inline two-cylinder

engine with an output of 85

horsepower mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Fully fuelled,

the F800GS weighs 207 kilograms – a lightweight composition that,

combined with higher ground clearance, lets the bike manoeuver

tricky obstacles and maintain composure at highway speeds.

Esthetically, the F800GS is visually stimulating; its off-road-inspired

fairings further highlight its adaptable persona. Adding heat to an

already fiery bike: a Lava Orange Metallic-Black Satin colour scheme,

not to mention the deep growl produced by a single exhaust.

X factorThe 2011 Advanced

fuses BMW design

with the ability to

take on road surfaces other than basic pavement.

With short front and rear-body overhangs, the new

X5 shows off a reconfigured front fascia and lowered fog

lamps, as well as a newly designed apron complemented

by a dual exhaust. A Black Sapphire Metallic paint job and

optional 20-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels make this SAV a

stunner. Inside: a concise cockpit with form-fitting lines,

soft-touch materials and an ergonomic dash that’s very

user friendly.

The X5’s 3.0L V6 Advanced Diesel engine is not noisy,

nor does it emit black plumes of smoke. In fact, this

Beamer’s considered the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its

class, with an estimated consumption of 10.9L/100km in

the city and 7.6L/100km on the highway. ∞

Extending a stylish home with a great patio

Around the corner from the driveway, an expansive

backyard deck designed by Tom Bakker Design

feels like a natural extension of the kitchen rather

than an add-on to the home.

“It blends right in with the surrounding landscape,”

he says. “The ravine beyond the backyard … has this

kind of curvy, organic shape to it. That’s the shape I was

trying to follow with the design of the deck. The result

is something that fits like a glove … and looks like it has

always been there.”

With the homeowner willing to “get on his knees

every couple of years to do some sanding and

refinishing,” Bakker opted to build the deck from a com-

bination of yellow and red cedar. “If their lifestyle didn’t

allow for that kind of upkeep,” he says, “we may have

chosen something different.”

Because the uppermost portion of the structure is high

compared with the grade of the property, Bakker created a

multi-level design with various sets of stairs descending to

the yard to break the 1,000-square-foot deck into different

areas for lounging, dining and soaking in the built-in hot tub.

“The goal for the homeowners was to be able to

entertain guests on this deck, around all these different

features,” he says. “We had to consider what the dimen-

sions of the dining table, hot tub, all the different elements

were going to be so we could design the space to allow

people to move around comfortably … with a glass of

wine in their hand.” ∞

When we found out we would be staging this

stunning South Surrey patio, we were thrilled

… and honoured. Tom Bakker is one of our

favourite local designers; it was a treat to work on his

Georgie Award-nominated deck.

As we studied the space, our imaginations spun. The

structure was enormous; our challenge would be to unify

the various sections of the deck while simultaneously

highlighting the many outdoor entertainment opportun-

ities it afforded.

Our first step was to select a bright summer palette to

complement the warm wooden canvas. We chose lime

green as a main accent; adding accessories in this ver-

dant shade successfully tied the deck together and drew

the eye to specific areas of focus.

Using furnishing and decor supplied by Flüff Rentals,

we opted to create a cozy seating area around the out-

door fireplace. Several cushions, throws, a bit of greenery

and just the right arrangement of furniture produced the

perfect gathering place for chilly nights.

Next, a stainless-steel Wolf grill with rotisserie,

warming rack and smoker box – courtesy of Kerrisdale

Lumber – was placed between the interior kitchen and

outdoor dining area to maximize meal prep. Finally,

we dressed the patio table to impress, adding candles

and seat cushions to make the space feel truly guest-

worthy. ∞

viewROOM WITH A Deconstructing a downtown

Vancouver reno

Ever wonder what a real renovation

looks like, from beginning to end?

Tom Bakker of Tom Bakker Design

and Meridian Pacific Construction president

Ken Gijssen take us through their latest col-

laboration – updating a 50-year-old West

End condo – step by step. First up: the initial

client meeting and walkthrough.

Step 1. “I met Liz Crawford at the Vancouver

Home and Design Show; she overheard

me saying things that she said sounded like

music to her ears,’” says Bakker. “Soon after

we had our first phone call about the project,

which involved doing a renovation of her

elderly relatives’ condo.”

The owners, he adds, had lived in the

apartment – which was built in 1961 – for

years; it was time to put the place up for sale.

To do that, a major remodelling was needed.

“During that first conversation Liz said, ‘We

need to do this renovation right. Windows

need to be replaced. The ceilings need to

be redone.’ We knew this was going to be a

challenge; we had to get to work right away.”

Step 2. To better assess the project, Bakker

needed to see the place in person. An on-

site meeting with Crawford was arranged,

during which the client’s needs were

brought to light.

“The reno had to be high-end in order to

maximize profit on the sale,” he says. “There

were large ‘wants,’ like combining the kitchen,

living room and dining room into a single

‘great room,’ and smaller ones, like removing

the intercom and replacing the front door.”

Crawford also relayed her main

requirement to Bakker: “She said, ‘Whatever

we do, we need to make sure that we empha-

size this spectacular view of English Bay.’”

Step 3. “That first look around the apart-

ment also exposed some of the challenges

we were going to face,” Bakker continues.

“For instance, the age of the place meant

we wouldn’t be able to move any of the

plumbing around, and that this unit wouldn’t

be able to accommodate an exhaust fan

above the stove or range.”

The designer also realized he’d have to

remove at least one wall to create the open

concept desired by the client – a process

that’s always subject to engineer approval.

“That’s the sort of stuff that’s taken care of by

the builder – and I knew just who to bring

on board at that point.”

Having previously collaborated with

Gijssen, Bakker successfully made the intro-

duction. The project was about to take off.

Step 4. Now it was Gijssen’s turn to famil-

iarize himself with the project. After con-

necting with Crawford by phone, he

arranged to see the site for himself.

“We walked around the suite discussing

Liz’s ideas, and I offered suggestions as they

came to me,” he says. “The suite had an abso-

lutely stunning view, and being able to cap-

italize on that was a major consideration.”

After discussing the possibilities, Gijssen

sensed in his client “an air of interest and

excitement” at what could be achieved

within the space.

“The main element of this first meeting

always comes down to trust,” he says.

“Getting to know each other, how we do

business and seeing if that relationship

starts to form with like interests, a common

goal and feeling a level of trust and comfort

to move on.”

Step 5. With the client’s requirements clear

and trust established, the three – Bakker,

IN THE WORKS

A major remodelling of this half-century-old downtown Vancouver apartment is being

undertaken in order to maximize the home’s resale value.

Pink shower tiles in the bathroom remind

us of a design era gone by.

After a creative brainstorming session with the client, designer Tom Bakker draws up a

“dream list” that included items for every room in the home, like taller kitchen cabinets,

increased pantry space, stone countertops and upgraded lighting.

“He mentioned that some of the ceilings had ‘sagged’

… and had to be repaired,” Gijssen says. “He also con-

nected me with another resident on the co-op board. This

was really just the start of this and other stories that would

shape our overall approach to this home renovation.”

Next up. In the August 2011 issue of Home Makeover,

Bakker and Gijssen re-visit the project site to take meas-

urements and reference photos. They begin to develop a

variety of proposed layouts – with some finishing details

– and the challenges associated with this condo reno

become more apparent. ∞

Gijssen and Crawford – met at the condo for a brain-

storming session.

“We all came together with a great creative energy; we

were excited to be working together,” says Gijssen. “Lots

of ideas came out of that meeting … Tom brought out

different design ideas, which we all worked with, and I

offered reflections back on how we could achieve these

within a reasonable budget. A synergy had started to flow

and we were really enjoying the way it was all unfolding.”

While the builder made notes on his anticipated

challenges (conduits and wires carved into the concrete

walls, a radiant hot-water heating system in the ceiling as

opposed to the floor), Bakker created a “dream list” that

included items for every room in the home: stretching

the upper kitchen cabinets to the ceiling, more pantry

space, sourcing granite or quartz countertops for the

main bathroom, straightening an angled wall in the bed-

room and upgrading all of the lighting.

Step 6. Several days later, Gijssen returned to the suite

to “open a wall and a bit of the concrete floor to check

on possibly moving some of the plumbing lines.” Their

hammering drew out a curious neighbour, who related

his own experience renovating the adjacent apartment a

few years earlier.

The client’s main

concern for this

reno: emphasizing

the condo’s

spectacular view of

English Bay.

Two good chicks to knowDesigners Jennifer Scott and Rachel Harrison

dress up a drab display suite

At least one display suite in South Surrey’s Morgan

Crossing development – No. 451 in the “Arc”

building – is better off having known Jennifer

Scott and Rachel Harrison.

Last winter, the “chicks” (together, Scott and Harrison

form design consultation firm A Good Chick To Know)

decorated the 828-square-foot condo as part of B.C.’s

Best Young Designer competition.

“Our first instinct was to divide up the rooms and

make each one distinct,” says Scott. “People are living in

smaller spaces these days. By giving each room a person-

ality you can make your home feel bigger than it is.”

Fishing for complimentsBelieve it or not, the chicks derived inspiration for the

entire suite from a single source: a vintage brass lamp

from Space Lab, which they shaded anew (thank you,

Victoria Lamp Shade Shop) and placed atop a Vancouver

Special-sourced end table in the living room.

That room hosts, too, a pair of atomic-inspired

chairs softened with double-stuffed houndstooth pil-

lows. Traditionally seen in office settings, the seats work

perfectly in this eclectic space, which also showcases

a collage of picture frames painted out in

high-gloss black and a 3-D wooden stag

head mounted to the wall.

The couch – a pullout bed that tucks

away discretely when not in use – provides

a neutral backdrop for a heap of gem-toned

throw pillows. The wall behind adds further

interest thanks to tree-print paper coupled

with matching branch-inspired metal art.

Two grey felted cubes stand in for a trad-

itional coffee table, saving space and adding

as-needed guest seating.

But the centrepiece of this room: a high-

zontal, to break up the space and make clear

the border between kitchen and living room.

Scott and Harrison also scoured Craigslist

for funky accessories on the cheap, including

four metallic chairs and a glass chandelier

nursery, the chicks covered one wall with

printed paper in that familiar tangerine tone.

The three remaining walls: treated with a

white-and-silver version of the same wallpaper.

Furniture-wise, an Eames-inspired rocker

themes from the main living space, while
