All Souls Day Mass During Mass on November 2nd, we will honor deceased family members and friends in the tradition of All Souls Day. Please send a picture of your deceased loved one for our special altar. Students will also bring forward prayer candles to create a cross of light in prayer for the victims in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Our Hispanic families will provide some tastes of Spanish cuisine during both lunches following Mass. Assistance may be needed and requests will be sent out via homeroom parents. Applications are being accepted for students entering 2018-19 starting November 20. for known available spaces. If you have a child who will be new to All Saints next year (any grade) please let the office know ASAP so we may hold a spot for him or her. Parent-Teacher Conferences School will be closed on Thursday, November 9 for parent-teacher conferences. Conferences will be offered between 2:30 and 4:30 on Wednesday, November 8 and between 11am and 7pm on Thursday, November 9. Teachers will be sending conference requests and sign-up information via email. Children in grades three and up are encouraged to attend conferences with their parent. The School Advisory Board has formed a committee to begin writing the strategic plan that will guide us over the next five years. Additionally, teachers create school learning goals each year based on student achievement data and observed student needs. This year we will also provide canned goods and non-perishables to Little Sisters of the Poor. Classrooms are competing to see who can collect the most items. Kindness and Acceptance All Saints believes strongly in being kind and accepting to all! Below are some of the ways we promote kindness and acceptance.

Children are rewarded and praised through our PBIS system when they are observed being kind.

Mr. Burgess is teaching students how to report and stop bullying/mean behaviors and how to appreciate our differences. (See a letter from Mr. Burgess attached.)

Guest speakers inspire our young people to treat others with respect and kindness. Our first guest this year spoke to middle schoolers about the dangers of social media and cyber-bullying. This program was sponsored by the Virginia Attorney General.

7th and 8th grade students attended a Prejudice Awareness Summit this month and will involve the school in activities which promote acceptance.

Middle School students have begun a Speak-Up Club which promotes taking a stand against bullying and meanness.

Books that teach kindness and acceptance are promoted and shared in all reading/literature classes throughout the school.

Campaign for the Hungry

We ask that your children bring dry milk, canned meat, pasta,

or any kind of canned good or nonperishable food to give to

Saint Paul’s food pantry and to the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Items will be received from November 1 to November 20, 2017.

Our goal is to gather 1000 non-perishable food items.

All Saints Parents,

At All Saints Catholic we all share a responsibility in working together to ensure that

all students feel welcome and safe. In the month of October I teach a unit on

kindness and educating students about bully behavior. We’ll be focusing on how to

recognize bully behavior, how to refuse to be bullied, how to report bullying, as well

as other related information.

Bully behavior happens when someone repeatedly hurts another person using

power (physical, verbal, relational, electronic) over them. Bully behavior is deliberate,

repeated over time and a situation in which one person has more power than the

other. In our lessons, students will learn about the effects the victim and bully and

how to be an upstander not a bystander when you see bully behavior.

At All Saints, we receive communication from teachers and parents concerning peer

relationships and the word “bully” is often misused for conflict. Conflict is a

disagreement that happens when people want different things. The people involved

in a conflict have equal power to solve the problem. They are not purposely trying to

hurt each other. Bully behavior is different. Bully behavior is unfair and one-sided. It

happens when someone keeps picking on someone on purpose. The goal of bully

behavior is to make the victim feel scared or bad about themselves and that’s not

okay. As part of the lesson, I help students understand the difference in power

between conflict and bully behavior.

In closing - As part of a positive approach to the negative actions of bully behavior, I

also teach students about Kindness. In fact, over half the time is about kindness.

This is one of the fruits of the spirit and at All Saints - we encourage our students to

think about how they treat each other, teachers, family and community members. A

quote from Jacqueline Woodson in her book Each Kindness says it best, “Tiny

waves rippled out, and away from the stone. This is what kindness does, Ms. Albert

said. Each little thing we do goes out, like a ripple, into the world.” I look forward to

teaching and encouraging your young learner to demonstrate the kindness that

changes our school, community and world this October. If you have any ideas to
